Abstract
Pinalia was formerly included in the genus Eria for a considerable period but it is now restored to generic status. Pinalia consists of around 160 epiphytic and some terrestrial species distributed from the Indo-Malesian region to Australia and the Pacific Islands. Stems are close together, each internode covered by membranous sheaths and bearing several leaves at or near the apex. Leaves are elliptic or linear-lanceolate, leathery. Inflorescence is axillary, several to many flowered, with conspicuous floral bracts. Flowers open widely, simultaneously, in white or greenish yellow (Fig. Pin 87.1). Sepals are pubescent at the back. Plants are usually large and seldom cultivated by hobbyists despite the flowers being quite attractive.
