A taxonomic revision of Bursera subgen. Bursera in the Greater Antilles and the Bahamas, including a new species from Cuba

Abstract

A revision of Bursera in the Greater Antilles and the Bahamas has confirmed that Commiphora does not occur in the region and that all but one species in the region belong to Bursera subgen. Bursera. Here we describe a new species, Bursera yaterensis; B. nashii is synonymized with B. glauca and B. ovata is synonymized with B. trinitensis; and we return five species from Commiphora to Bursera. A dichotomous key is provided using mostly vegetative characters due to the frequent lack of adequate reproductive material and the relative uniformity of most floral and fruit characters.

Resumen

Una revisión de Bursera en las Grandes Antillas y las Bahamas ha confirmado que el género Commiphora no está presente en la región y que todas las especies de Bursera (con la excepción de una, B. graveolens) pertenecen al subgénero Bursera. Se describe una nueva especie, Bursera yaterensis. B. nashii se convierte en sinónimo de B. glauca y B. ovata pasa a ser sinónimo de B. trinitensis. Adicionalmente se reinstauran cinco especies de Commiphora a Bursera. Se incluye una clave taxonómica usando predominantemente caracteres vegetativos, debido a la frecuente ausencia de material fértil y a la relativa uniformidad de las características de flores y frutos en estas especies.
