Dryopteris

The genus Dryopteris includes about 225 species and almost 80 hybrids, that come in many cultivars. The Dryopteris are distributed in the northern hemisphere. It is a very homogeneous, and some species are difficult to distinguish due to common ascendants. Most of the Dryopteris are easy to grow in our gardens, and contribute to their beauty, by their stature, their colours.

    Golden-scaled male fern.

    A magnificent native fern forming a strong clump. Fronds pinnate-pinnatifid, lance-shaped, glossy, dark green. In spring, the unfurling croziers cloaked with large ginger scales, are stunning. For cool spots, in acidic and humusy soils, and even chalky, in shade or light shade. Once established in the garden, it is drought tolerant. Evergreen. Height : 120cm. Width : 100cm.     Family : Dryopteridaceae.

    Species from the Ardèche region of France. It is likely a fertile hybrid between D. affinis subsp. affinis and D. tyrrena. The fronds are in dense clumps, matt green. The pinnae are upward facing. It is easy to grow in any soil, in shade or light shade. It is drought tolerant. Evergreen. Height : 50/80cm. Hardiness : -18°C.

    Narrow buckler fern.

    This species forms an airy clump. The lamina is pale green and smooth. The long stipes bear sparse, uniformly tan scales. It is easy to grow and suitable for woods, banks, rocks, marshlands, acidic or alkaline soils, in shade. Deciduous. Height : 50/80cm. Hardiness : -35°C.

    Champion's wood fern.

    This refined fern displays upright, thick, broadly triangular, satiny green fronds. Late in spring, the crosiers, appear cloaked with silver white fuzz; then, the young fronds unfurl anise-green coloured. For acidic or neutral, humusy soils, well-drained in light shade.     The sterile fronds are pinnate-pinnatifid, evergreen, arranged in open crown. The fertile fronds are erected in the middle, pinnae are upward facing, hence its name of crested fern.     Broad buckler fern.

    Synonym : D. austriaca.

    This fern of cool woodlands, forms an elegant upright clump. Its broad triangular fronds are tripinnate. On the stipes, the scales are  slender and bicoloured, a dark centre framed by light brown borders. Looking at the scales , it is the way to distinguish this species from the others Dryopteris (D. carthusiana...) . It has a strong preference for acidic soils, in shade. Semi-evergreen.
