Ms. Haley Talks Pedagogy at the Eastman School of Music

Last week was so full of teaching inspiration! It was a dream come true to speak about pedagogy with string performance students at the Eastman School of Music (mobile users, click through to your browser to view the photos). Eastman’s performance majors (both graduate and undergrad students) already had so much insight into teaching and it was such a privilege to spend time with them! Many thanks to Dr. Lisa Caravan and Eastman’s Music Teaching & Learning Department for sponsoring my visit. It was especially exciting to hear that Dr. Caravan and her students headed to ROCMusic to teach immediately following our class together! So much of Eastman is reflected in Kids Aren’t Lazy and in my own studio. I was fortunate to belong to three ESM studios: Phillip Ying’s, Zvi Zeitlin’s, and Oleh Krysa’s. Phillip Ying shared with me the joy of chamber music. Zvi Zeitlin saw more potential in me than I saw in myself and invested so much in my development as a violinist. I will always be grateful for his determination. Oleh Krysa leads a studio full of kindness, friendship, and musical excellence, all while covering so much incredible repertoire!
I also had a fabulous mentor at the University of Rochester, Russell Peck. I took every English class he offered while I was studying at Eastman. He and his wife, Ruth Peck (a pianist) showed me that music and academics (writing, especially!) are hugely synergistic.

Audition Season is Here + a NEW Local Resource!

HS Region Auditions will be this Saturday, October 13th, and MS Region Auditions will be next Saturday, October 20th. To celebrate these exciting auditions and help everyone prepare, I’ve teamed up with the Sugar Land Moms Network for an article sharing my audition prep tips! https://thesugarlandmoms.com/4-easy-ways-to-boost-audition-performance-for-orchestra-kids/

Sugar Land Moms is a new go-to site for families and is a chapter of The Local Moms Network, https://thelocalmomsnetwork.com. It’s a great resource for everything from local event calendars, arts and activity resources, and parent interviews to deals from nearby businesses.

In LHS news this week, we’re extra proud of Anika, who as principal viola in her Dulles orchestra will perform a solo in tomorrow’s orchestra concert. We’re also absolutely thrilled for Jordan, who (in the top group at Travis) has started coaching viola sectionals for a lower ensemble and has her own principal viola solo coming up!

 

 

 

LHS Musicians Accepted into Top School Orchestras

Hello, everyone!

It’s audition season, and that means we’re starting to find out which orchestras our young musicians have been accepted into for the 2018 – 2019 school year! We’ll update this site with results as they come in, as so far only a few schools have posted their audition results and many more are sure to do so between now and August!

Congratulations to Seline (violin) and Dhruv (viola) for reaching the top orchestra (Camerata) at Austin High School! Both Seline and Dhruv will have the huge honor of performing at the Chicago Midwest Clinic in December 2018.

Congratulations to Jordan (viola) for reaching the top orchestra (Symphony) at Travis High School! Jordan will attend the high school AFA program this summer as well. So exciting!

Jordan joins Esosa (viola) in the top Travis group. On that note, Esosa will be spending one month this summer in Thailand, having successfully applied for a summer abroad scholarship through the Council on International Educational Exchance (CIEE) program. Wow, Esosa!

Congratulations to Zayn (viola) for reaching the top orchestra (Camerata) at Garcia Middle School as a 6th-grader! Zayn will attend the AFA this summer as well.

Congratulations to Aishwarya (violin), who will stay in the top group at Clements HS and to Amanda (viola), who will stay in the top group at Ridgepoint HS.

*EDIT, 5/31* Congratulations also to Ryder (viola), who has reached the top orchestra (Symphony) at Sartartia Middle School!

Congratulations, Winter Showcase Musicians!

Congratulations to all of the LHS families who participated in this Saturday’s Winter Showcase Concerts! Violinists and violists performed works ranging from Suzuki Book I favorites to Beethoven’s Spring Sonata and Schumann’s Märchenbilder. From Bartók to Mozart, our LHS performers demonstrated command of a wide range of musical styles.

We were thrilled to once again offer students the opportunity to work with LHS pianist Evelyn Lam (https://laurenhaleystudios.com/meettheartists/) as Ms. Lam completes her doctoral degree in piano performance at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.

Virtuosi of Houston and Karen Needham hosted both the 5:30pm and 7:30pm LHS recitals in their beautiful studio. Thank you again, Virtuosi and Ms. Needham!

LHS Welcomes 2017!

As we celebrate the end of 2016 and the beginning of 2017 it’s wonderful to take a look back at the accomplishments of LHS students! As your teacher, I’m so honored to have the opportunity to work with all of you. In the past few months alone we’ve launched a new, larger studio space at the Sugar Land Art Center and Gallery, performed all over Houston, and celebrated recitals, competitions, auditions, academic awards, and youth orchestra performances. It’s so tremendously exciting to see everyone take on leadership positions in their school orchestras as well. Bravo, 2016, and here’s to starting 2017 off on the right note!

Evelyn Lam Selected as Music Inspire Africa Artist

Congratulations to LHS Collaborative Pianist Evelyn Lam for being selected as one of six 2016 Music Inspire Africa artists! Evelyn will travel to South Africa from May 23rd – June 13th to perform, present, and teach.
