Puerto Naos La Palma: History of a small fishing village turned into an important tourist center on the island
Puerto Naos is a tourist town located on the west coast of the island of La Palma. Originally, it was a group of houses for fishermen and banana growers, along with the neighboring neighborhoods of La Bombilla and El Remo. However, in the 1980s, the population began to shift towards tourism and second homes, especially after the opening of the Hotel Sol in 1990. Today, Puerto Naos is the main tourist hub on the west side of the island and has 3,000 tourist accommodation places.
Despite its strong tourist orientation, around 1,500 inhabitants reside in Puerto Naos, who have been affected by the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano in September 2021. Since then, the town has become a ghost town due to the emission of toxic gases that continue, even after the eruption was declared over in December of the same year. Carbon dioxide levels are unbreathable and pose a health hazard, forcing local residents and businesses to abandon their homes and facilities.
In short, the situation in Puerto Naos is very complex, and it is still unknown when it will be possible to return and resume tourist and commercial activity in the town. For now, the priority is to ensure the safety and health of the people living there and avoid unnecessary risks.
