  • Deciduous groundcover, 7.5-23 cm high, may form a mat.  Leaves opposite, appearing whorled at end of stems, oval to obovate, 2.5-7.5 cm long, glossy dark green in summer, reddish in fall.  The true flowers are greenish white and not showy, they are enclosed by showy white bracts, bloom occurs in late spring.   Fruit is scarlet, 6 mm diam.
  • Partial or full shade.  Exacting as to culture.  Requires moist soil that is high in organic matter, such a peat moss or pine needles, and frequent watering until well established.
  • Hardy to USDA Zone 2      Native from southern Greenland to Alaska, south to Maryland, west to South Dakota, New Mexico, and California.
  • cornus: the Latin name for Cornus mas.      canadensis: of Canada.
