Barkeria Scandens is in bloom

IMG_5518.jpgI purchased this Barkeria Scandens from California Orchids at their open house on September 22, 2018.  It is potted in a five-inch plastic pot in a mix of large bark and large charcoal pieces.  I have found that this plant likes high light, good air movement, and likes to have its roots dry out quickly.

It likes a winter’s rest, in that watering should be reduced.  I was not aware of this requirement this past winter, and gave the plant full water.  The plant has grown taller this year, but did not expand the number of shoots.  Most new roots were aerial roots.

The flowers are really striking, bright purple.  We will give it a winter’s rest this year, and see what happens.
