GOOD TO KNOW

The 100th anniversary of the autonomous Åland Islands Åland’s autonomy is 100 years old. It will be celebrated for one year starting June 9. The theme of the celebrations is ”100 years of willfulness”. Autonomy has enabled Ålanders to create the perfect conditions for the unique way of life on the red granite islands in the Baltic Sea. In June 1921, the League of Nations in Geneva decided that Åland should be an autonomous region within the borders of Finland. As part of the agreement, Åland became a demilitarized zone to remove the military threat to Sweden. To this day, there is no military on the Åland Islands and Ålanders are exempt from military service in Finland. THE ÅLAND EXAMPLE Åland’s autonomy is now used as an example and model for peaceful solutions to minority conflicts around the world. The

Åland Peace Institute conducts research and raises awareness about minorities and autonomies. CELEBRATIONS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR One year after the League of Nations decision in Geneva, Åland’s elected parliament met for the first time on June 9 1922. Julius Sundblom, editor-in-chief of the newspaper Åland, was elected chairman. A statue of Sundblom stands in the square of Mariehamn. A speech will be given here on 9 June, which is Åland’s Autonomy Day. The centennial celebration of Åland’s autonomy will launch on June 9. Celebrations will continue throughout the year with various events from seminars on autonomy to joyful folk festivals. Read the full programme at www.visitaland.com.

Travelling around Åland Åland consists of the main island and thousands of other islands of all sizes around it. Many of the bigger islands are inhabited and you can reach them by the local inter-island ferries. It is easy to explore the Åland Islands. On the main island there are four main roads with public bus connections to the ferry harbours. Apart from the main roads there are hundreds of kilometres of scenic village roads offering a lot to see and experience. To help you find your way, you can buy Åland Tourist & Cycling Map, a good companion in every weather! THE ARCHIPELAGO When the locals talk about the archipelago, they talk about the islands located east of the main island. These islands can be reached by Ålandstrafiken’s inter-island ferries. You can make day trips to the islands or stay overnight.

Here are some basic facts good to know when you are planning a visit to the archipelago. Main road 2 leads to Vårdö. There is a short cable ferry crossing operated 24/7 and you don’t need to book the ferry in advance. From Hummelvik ferry harbour on Vårdö you can take a ferry to Kumlinge and Brändö on the Northern archipelago ferry route. You can catch a Southern route ferry to Sottunga and Kökar from Långnäs harbour at the end of the main road 3 to Lumparland. There is also a ferry connection on the intermediate ferry route between Föglö and Kumlinge. To Föglö take a ferry från Svinö ferry harbour, follow the main road 3. The Föglö ferry has many daily departures. Please remember to make a ferry booking for your vehicle in advance!

ACTIVITIES

By bike to the nature trails of Nåtö and Järsö South of Mariehamn, the causeway crosses over islands like a pearl necklace. The scenic route is a classic favourite among cyclists who love to experience archipelago nature close up. You can combine the bike ride with a hike in the beautiful wooded meadows. Järsö and Nåtö are located south of Mariehamn. In the past, inhabitants took their boats to commute to and from Mariehamn and their home islands. In the 1970s, a road was built from one island to another, and thus the islands became more accessible and more people started to move to the area. The scenic road is an all-time favourite among cyclists. Follow either Östernäsvägen or Västra Ytternäsvägen southwards from the centre of Mariehamn. Both roads join Järsövägen which runs all the way until the turning point on Järsö, about 15km from Mariehamn.

On Nåtö island, there is a 3-kilometrelong nature trail that leads through wooded meadows and over sea meadows and cliffs. Along the trail there are picnic tables and information boards depicting the history of the wooded meadows and their flora and fauna. The rich flora includes several rare wild orchids. SEASIDE ROCKS On Järsö island there is a recreation area for the town dwellers of Mariehamn. It is located on the southernmost tip of the island with a nice seaview. Here you can roam freely or follow the signposted paths and enjoy a picnic on the cliffs by the sea and relax in Stickstugan’s crafts café with a colourful garden and crafts shop. At the parking lot, where the nature reserve begins, there is a barbecue area.

ACTIVITIES

Play golf in Kastelholm A completely new golf experience awaits you in Åland! The Castle Course in Kastelholm was opened last year after a major makeover, and players have been impressed with the course. Danish golf course architect Philip Spogárd was commissioned to plan and remake the new Castle Course for Åland Golf Club. The result is a new course with several completely new and partially rebuilt holes. The proximity to the scenic sea inlet of Slottssundet and the medieval castle of Kastelholm has been highlighted and the bay is now visible from all 18 holes. Several holes follow the shoreline, including the holes 9 and 10, and offer challenges for elite players as well as amateurs. Here it is important to choose the line of play according to courage and ability; across the water or a safer line inland? At the club’s facility in Kastelholm, there

is another 18-hole course, King’s Course, and Prinsessan with six short holes. Changing rooms with a sauna, driving range, shop and restaurant are also available as well as the opportunity of taking golf lessons. GOLF IN ECKERÖ Also in Kyrkoby in Eckerö, there is an 18hole course that was built partly on fields and partly in forest. Each hole has four tees which means that the course is suitable for players of different levels of skills, and even for beginners who prefer shorter holes. Guest players with a green card and membership in another golf club are welcome. There is a driving range and a service building with showers.

ACTIVITIES

Hiking along the versatile Lemlandsleden trail Hike through forests and picturesque farm villages on the hilly Lemlandsleden trail between Lemström’s canal and Lumparsund. The 25-kilometre long Lemlandsleden is one of Åland’s longer hiking trails. It can be hiked in both directions and also in shorter stages. The village of Söderby is centrally located and approximately halfway the trail. It is a good starting and ending point if you want to hike half of the trail. There is a bus connection with several daily departures from Mariehamn to starting points including Lemström’s canal, Söderby and Lumparsund. Buses and taxis are available for your return to Mariehamn. The trail is easy to follow with whitetopped poles and white paint on trees, electric poles and stones to guide you. The varied terrain includes the rocky Kasberget and Bistorpberget hills. At 60

and 77 metres above sea level, the hilltops have a fantastic sea view. SHIPMASTER’S HOMESTEAD Along the forest and country roads you will also pass the villages of Söderby, Norrby and Granboda where you can visit the shipmaster’s homestead Pellas which was built in 1884. At Pellas, you can see how a traditional successful farmer family lived. Several novels have been written about the farmer shipping era, including the novel ”Leo” by Ulla-Lena Lundberg.

ACTIVITIES

Feel the atmosphere of a solitary lighthouse Around Åland there are several lighthouses on remote islands such as Sälskär, Lågskär and Märket. You can visit the islands on a guided tour offered by one of the several taxi boat companies. The white and slender lighthouse on Sälskär island north of Åland was lit in 1868. The lighthouse is just over 30 metres high. You can climb the 164 steps up to the top and once there you will be rewarded with splendid sea views in all directions. In the past there were several houses and buildings for the lighthouse keepers and their families on the island. The community was small but vivid. When the autumn and winter storms raged at their worst, the waves washed over the island and a walk from the houses to the lighthouse could be dangerous. The lighthouse was automated in 1949. The lighthouse keepers moved from the island and the houses were demolished. Today you can visit Sälskär and try to rec-

reate a picture of the solitary and isolated life on the island. Sälskär island has a lot to offer for those interested in botany. Here plants such as wild blackcurrants and cranberries have taken root in the crevices. There is also a large colony of razorbills nesting on the island. MANY ISLANDS TO VISIT There are many more lighthouses on the islands including Lågskär, located halfway between Åland and the coast of Sweden. Märket is located northwest of Åland where the national border between Finland and Sweden crosses the small island. The former pilot station of Kobba Klintar, just off Mariehamn, is a very popular destination. There is a small marina and a café. The pilot house is open for visitors and exhibitions and concerts are arranged in the white beacon.

ACTIVITIES

28 km by kayak around Kumlinge island Experience Kumlinge by kayak, but don’t forget to go ashore and visit the sights on dry land! Åland is perfect for kayaking trips. There is a myriad of islands, big ones and small ones, inhabited and uninhabited. There are quiet and narrow bays, but also open sea areas when you want to try sea kayaking and taste higher waves. The municipality of Kumlinge is located east of Åland’s main island. The municipality consists of several islands with villages, such as Kumlinge, Enklinge and Seglinge. You can travel to Kumlinge by Ålandstrafiken’s inter-island ferries along the Northern line. The ferries take cars, but remember to make a booking in advance. You can also leave your car in Hummelvik harbour and carry the kayak onboard. There are many alternatives for pleasant day trips by kayak around Kumlinge archipelago. For example, try kayaking 28km

around the island of Kumlinge. You can start and stop at the ferry harbour or the visitors’ marina. Olle Persson, author of the Swedish guidebook “Åland – vandra, cykla, paddla” describes the route as “medium-difficult and an excellent day trip destination”. Along the route there is open sea as well as more protected archipelago waters to kayak through. EXTRA LOOPS If you’re feeling inspired, you can take a detour to the island Enklinge where you can visit the Hermas farm museum or to Bärö where there is a restaurant and accommodation available. Do not miss the medieval stone church which has fine murals! If time permits, you can also paddle around the islands of Snäckö and Seglinge.

ACTIVITIES

Join the local running events! The annual Bomarsund Trailrun arranged on the old Russian fortress area of Bomarsund is one of the many events held in Åland. Bomarsund Trailrun attracts with a trail in historic settings in Bomarsund where a mighty fortress was started to be built in 1830 when Åland and Finland were a part of the Russian empire. New this year is the 28km distance between Kastelholm Castle and Bomarsund. Other distances are 4.5km and 12km. There is also a 1-kilometre-long trail run for the kids. Bomarsund Openwater swim contest is held the same day in Bomarsund. The Kanonloppet running event is the most popular in Åland. The 22.5km trail leads through a varied terrain from Markusböle to Mariehamn along seashore meadows, forest trails and village roads.

The fastest runners make it in one hour while others are allowed more than three hours. The Ålandsmarschen walking event is held on the same day and on the same track with various shorter distances for runners and hikers to choose from. ÅLAND MARATHON Åland Marathon is another popular event at the end of the summer season. It starts from Mariebad swimming centre in Mariehamn and follows a 5-kilometre track in town. There is also a half marathon for those who want to have a shorter alternative.

Biking in Åland Åland is a pleasant place for biking, with lovely sceneries and many places of interest. In order for you to have a safe and nice bicycle trip, here is some advice on what you as a cyclist should know. Did you know that the bike is a vehicle and its rider a driver? Thus, the same rules apply for bicycles as for other vehicles. Right-hand traffic applies for cyclists on roads and on cycle paths too. As a driver of a vehicle you must observe right of way for vehicles approaching from the right. This doesn’t mean you can simply charge ahead into an intersecting roadway without looking to your right. You have to exercise the care that circumstances demand. This is all about interaction with other people and respect for agreements and rules of traffic. For your own safety you need to pay attention in every situtation even if you have the right of way.

Don´t forget your helmet, it´s a cheap life insurance!

Please remember only children under 12 years of age can ride a bicycle on the sidewalk. Cyclists can travel side by side only when this can be done without danger, and not at all on sidewalks. Bicycles with more than two wheels, as well as mopeds, can’t be driven side by side with another bicycle or moped at all. Sign well in advance when making a turn, look behind you and make sure you can turn without risk. A safe bicycle is equipped with a bell, working brakes, white reflector in front, red in back, orange spoke reflectors (2 pcs) and lamp back and front. Use a reflective vest while biking to make sure you’re visible at a distance. Last but not least, don’t forget your helmet, it’s a cheap life insurance!

Road signs to be aware of Walkway This is a walkway, biking not allowed. Walkway/cycle path This path is divided into one part for pedestrians and one for cyclists. The symbols on the sign tell you which part is meant for which category. Right of way Cyclists entering a road area from a cycle path must observe right of way. This means that you lower your speed in time or stop, and you can only continue when there is no traffic with right of way. NB! As a cyclist ou must always observe right of way, even when the crossing is marked in white for cyclists.

28 – www.aland.com We wish you a safe and pleasant bike ride on Åland

Stop sign All vehicles must stop at this sign, this also includes bicycles. Pedestrian crossing All vehicles, including bicycles, must let pedestrians cross. At a crossing with no marking in white for cyclists, you should walk your bicycle across. Bicycle path The sign indicates distance to a location along the bicycle path. Bicycle crossing When you are crossing a road via a bicycle crossing, you must give way to crossing traffic.

ACTIVITIES

Adventures, hiking and food on Vårdö island On Vårdö island, there are outdoor activities for everyone. Flow Park is a great adventure park for everyone who enjoys challenges up in the air. There is also a hiking trail in Lövö for those who like to stay grounded. Flow Park in Sandösund on Vårdö is a high ropeway course built between living trees. Here you can test your courage and skills on swaying paths, swings and slide cables with obstacles. Everyone over 7 years old and 120 cm tall are welcome and no previous experience is required. Climbers receive safety introductions and are obliged to use a safety harness and helmet. There are three ropeways of different difficulty of tasks, levels and heights. The highest trail is at the height of 15 metres above ground. There is also a signposted 5-kilo-

metre hiking trail in Lövö, starting from Sandösund and goes through varied terrain including fields, forest paths and village roads. The small village of Lövö was once the host of peace negotiations between Sweden and Russia in 1718–1719 during the Great Northern War. FOOD AND REFRESHMENTS After all your tiring adventures, enjoy a meal and refreshments at the nearby restaurant Kallas Skärgård at Sandövägen 81. The restaurant is housed in an old barn and is open year round. Hamnmagasinet is a charming summer café worth a visit by a jetty at Båthusviken’s village marina in Vargata. To get to Vårdö, follow the main road number 2 northwards. There is a short cable ferry crossing between the islands of Prästö and Töftö.

All aboard a tall ship to Australia! How did the captain navigate the sailing ship Pommern all the way to Australia? How did the chef stock up on food for the 100-day journey? Listen to the crew members’ thoughts on board the Pommern ship. The audio guide ”100 Days Under Sail” is part of the visitors’ experience on board the tall ship Pommern. Listen to different crew members speak about life on board during a return crossing from Åland to Port Victoria in Australia. One of the sailors is 16-year-old Johan from Åland who makes his first long voyage at sea. The crew’s stories are based on letters, logbooks and diary notes written by crew members on windjammer ships. The four-masted barque Pommern was once owned by Captain Gustaf Erikson from Åland. The Pommern sailed with cargo including grain between Australia and Europe.

The Pommern can be visited via the Åland Maritime Museum, which has a distinguished collection of marine and nautical objects from the sailing ship era and separate sections for more modern engine-driven ships and maritime safety. 7500 YEARS OF HISTORY Life in Åland for 7,500 years is depicted in the Cultural History Museum of Åland, which shares space with Åland’s Art Museum. The permanent collections display Åland’s history from the first inhabitants who arrived to Åland’s isolated islands for hunting and fishing, life in the Middle Ages, the era under the reign of Sweden, the Russian period from 1809 to 1917, and all the way to today’s autonomous Åland.

New opera about witch trials During the witch hunts in the 1660s, several women were accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake in Åland. One of the accused, Lisbeta Skarp, is the protagonist in a newly written opera that will be performed at Alandica Concert Hall in July. The local cultural association Katrina is not afraid of large and unique projects. On 15–17 July, the opera “Lisbeta – Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” will be staged at Alandica Concert Hall in Mariehamn. The libretto is based on the novel “Märket” (The Mark) by Åland author Carina Karlsson. It is about the 17th-century witch trials in Åland where Lisbeta Skarp was one of the women who was beheaded and burnt at the stake. Icelandic composer Karólina Eiriksdóttir wrote the music, and Åland’s own Sofie Asplund (soprano) sings the starring role of Lisbeta. Asplund has been widely praised and acknowledged for her leading

opera roles in Sweden. In the opera, a bird also has a special flying role. Åland has many renowned opera singers well-known across Europe, including Jenny Carlstedt, Therese Karlsson, Dan Karlström and Philip Björkqvist. The opera is directed by Åland’s Ida Kronholm, who invites the audience to see ”a grand tragedy where good eventually wins over evil. It is a great privilege for me to be involved in creating opera from the very beginning”, says Ida. This is not the first time that the Katrina Cultural Association has set up a unique project. In the summer of 2015, it produced the opera called Magnus-Maria, which went on to tour Scandinavia.

Textile crafts at the old Post & Customs House Eckerö Post and Customs House will host a local textiles exhibition this summer with works by over 30 artisans. Åland Museum has started collecting and documenting Åland textile crafts and designs. Artisans participating in the exhibition all have a local connection to Åland. A day in Kastelholm and Bomarsund Kastelholm Castle and the ruins of Bomarsund fortress are two of Åland’s main attractions.

and winner of Swedish reality TV show “Survivors” Michael Björklund.

When King Gustav Vasa of Sweden visited Åland in the 16th century, he and his court stayed at Kastelholm Castle. The castle was located next to an important fairway that continued to the church of Sund when the water level was much higher than today. The Castle also used to be a royal prison: King Eric XIV, the son of Gustav Vasa and King of Sweden in 1560–1568, was imprisoned here in the autumn of 1571. The Castle consists of different sections and has been built and rebuilt over the centuries. The Castle is open for visitors in summertime and is also a fine cultural scene for music and theatre performances. After the visit, you can quench your thirst and hunger at the nearby restaurant. Smakbyn is managed by local master chef

RUSSIAN COASTAL FORTRESS Bomarsund is full of memories from a fascinating era in Åland’s history. After the war in 1808–1809 between Sweden and Russia, Åland and Finland became part of the Russian empire. Russia started to build a coastal defence fortress in Åland against enemies in the west. Construction in Bomarsund required labour from all over Russia and sparked the creation of a civilian town with shops and schools next to the fortress. The fortress was never completed as it was attacked and destroyed during the Crimean War in 1854 by French and English troops. Remains of the main stronghold and fort towers on hills remain, as well as foundations of many civilian houses.

Artist Kjell Ekström has his art gallery Berghäll in the same village. He has also renovated Näset’s forest trail that runs in beautiful surroundings. Before or after your visit you can take a look at his special books pavilion next to the gallery.

HIKING ON FÖGLÖ Föglö has two signposted hiking trails along which you can see typical archipelago nature. Launching of the sailing yacht Alanta The sailing yacht Alanta, built in the Maritime Quarter of Mariehamn, is to be launched during Sail Åland, Mariehamn 2021. The construction of the sailing yacht Alanta has been going on for several years and is now ready to launch. The launching of the yacht will take place on Saturday 25 July at 3 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend the launching ceremony! A RECONSTRUCTION The Alanta is a reconstruction of a sail yacht that was a common type of an archipelago vessel in the early 1800s. The hull of the sail yacht is akin to a big archipelago peasant sailing boat, but is larger and more seaworthy, something that became essential as the journeys became longer and longer. The enthusiasts behind the construction have created the Alanta according to infor-

mation about the old-type boats that have been found in preserved documents. No exact drawings have been made available to them. SET SAIL FROM MARIEHAMN Several schooner ships built in modern times have been launched at the Maritime Quarter of Mariehamn. It is located by Mariehamn’s eastern harbour and within a walking distance from the town centre. In 1988, the galeas ship Albanus was launched. The Albanus still sails and has her home port in the Maritime Quarter. The Albanus has won several awards in The Tall Ships Races.

Eat, drink and shop locally! There is a lot of Åland’s raw produce and artisan products to choose from at the Harvest Festival. The Harvest Festival is the biggest autumn event in Åland. Many farms in the countryside open their gates to visitors and several restaurants compose special harvest festival menus. The farms sell cultivated, home-baked and locally produced artisan food, such as charcuterie, cheese, jam and juice. Local arts and crafts are also on offer. Several farms also have a restaurant where you can enjoy local delicacies on site. Bolstaholm in Geta is one of the largest cattle farmsteads in Åland. The owners Ann and Henrik Sundberg raise beef cattle, and in their farm shop fresh cuts and charcuteries, salamis and hamburgers are sold. A large number of other Åland goodies are sold in market stalls in the beautiful farmyard.

For the children there is, among other things, a giant sandbox to play in and a castle of straw bales to jump in. DAILY PROGRAMME The Harvest Festival is held on 15–17 September and the programme varies from day to day. Plan your own favourite route to catch up with as many farms as possible or focus on just a few of interest. There is a Harvest Festival bus that takes you to a selection of the farms – a good alternative when you travel without a car. The spring festival Åland in Greenery is held in May and focuses on local fresh produce of the season.

Explore Jan Karlsgården’s open-air museum The open-air museum of Jan Karlsgården in Kastelholm is an excellent excursion destination to explore Åland’s heritage. Old buildings have been moved here from different parts of Åland, such as barns, ox stables, blacksmith’s and smoke saunas. For example, the main farmhouse Jan Karls once stood in the village of Bamböle in Finström. VARIOUS EVENTS In the area there are also fine windmills, a boathouse by Slottssundet sea inlet and one of Åland’s foremost sights, Kastelholm Castle. Here, Åland’s official midsummer pole is erected on Midsummer’s Eve, this year on the 25th of June. Visitors are welcome to join in and give a helping hand with garlands and other decorations of the pole during the day.

At Jan Karlsgården, various events are usually arranged such as crafts days and markets. In July there are themed craft activities for youngsters. Open daily from 10 am to 5 pm from 2 May to 30 September. This year’s programme will be updated on Facebook and www. kastelholm.ax. PRISON MUSEUM The prison museum of Vita Björn is located opposite Jan Karlsgården. The prison was built in 1784 and it is the oldest preserved prison building in Finland. Vita Björn was used as a prison for almost 200 years. The last prisoner was released in 1974.

Extraordinary wine tasting and indoor games Åland is home to many creative entrepreneurs. The newly-founded Vinsmedjan is a wine bistro offering both tastings and art experiences in an old blacksmiths. In restaurant Compagniet in Mariehamn you can combine food and drink with games of various kinds. The building belonging to Kvarnbo Pensionat in Saltvik was used as the village blacksmiths from 1909, hence the name Vinsmedjan, the wine smithy. Behind the project, you can find a creative and versatile trio who has opened an artisan centre in the village of Kvarnbo in Saltvik, the very same village where the popular Viking Market is held annually. Ella Grüssner Cromwell-Morgan is a B&B hostess, sommelier and musician. Laura Gäddnäs is a bakery and kitchen chef, while Olivia Sarling is a waitress and artisan smith. Together they run Vinsmedjan and offer treats for the mouth, the eye and the ear.

The café is open during the peak season, and wine tastings are arranged by prebooking. You can also book your own tastings for groups up to 50 people. Vinsmedjan is located next to the B&B of Kvarnbo Pensionat and art gallery Galleri Skarpans. EAT, DRINK AND PLAY Restaurant Compagniet in Mariehamn is a friendly place where you can just drop in for a drink in the bar or enjoy a hearty dinner. If you’re not feeling hungry, you’re welcome to choose just one of the small dishes from the menu. Before or after dinner, you can try one of the games available – pétanque on a fullsize court, billiards or shuffleboard. Food artisans offer taste experiences In Åland, artisanal food is in high demand. If you want to see them up close, you can book in on the farm’s pig safari tour. You visit their pastures with a tractor and wagon. The tours are arranged four Wednesdays in July. More information about Nygårds forest pigs can be found on Facebook. DELICACIES OF THE SEA At Västerro farm restaurant, hand-caught fish delicacies including flounder, wild salmon and perch are on the seasonal menu. The fisherman himself presents the fish of the day and prepares the delicacies in the farm restaurant next to the sea.

Smoked fish is usually for sale and take away. Västerro also arranges artisanal tasting packages for guests. APPLE ORCHARDS Many farms welcome visitors and offer rural experiences, including the apple farm Öfvergårds with apple orchards, Kvarnbo Pensionat & Vinsmedjan, Snäckö Frukt with fruit orchards, and Marskogens Lamm. FOOD

Bake your own Åland pancake Åland pancake is easy to bake at home. Take the taste with you; try our favourite recipe! Traditional Åland pancake can be found in most cafés and outdoor markets. Not to be missed when in Åland! Some bake the pancake of semolina porridge while others prefer rice porridge. Some serve the pancake with prune jam and others with raspberry jam. Taste different versions of the pancake and bake your favourite one when back at home. If you use rice porridge, prepare the porridge according to instructions of the package and then follow our recipe.

CARDEMOM GIVES THE FLAVOUR 1 litre milk 1.5 dl semolina/rice porridge 1 dl flour 3 eggs 1 dl sugar 0.5 tsp salt 2 tsp cardemom 50 g butter or margarine Boil the farina. Let cool for a while. Lightly whisk the eggs and sugar and mix with the semolina/farina. Mix in the flour, salt and, most importantly, the cardemom, which gives the pancake its unique flavour. Spread the batter out (approx. 2 cm thick) onto a greased baking pan. Place pats of butter on top of the batter. Bake at 200 degrees until the pancake is golden brown. The pancake can be frozen if there is any left over.

THE TOWN OF A THOUSAND LINDEN TREES Mariehamn is called ”the town of a thousand linden trees” because of the linden tree Esplanade between the Eastern and Western harbours. The town is also often called a maritime town, because of the proud maritime heritage and the importance of the shipping in the local economy. The well-being of the environment is important for an island in the middle of the Baltic Sea. The municipality is certified in environmental management according to the international standard ISO 14001.

MARIEHAMN IN A MUSEUM Would you like to see what Mariehamn looked like a century ago? Mariehamnsmuseet is a small museum displaying a miniature model of the town in the 1920s. The houses have been built according to original drawings and with small details, such as cats and chimney sweepers on roofs. The museum at Ålandsvägen 42 is open until 15 August. More information at www.mariehamn.ax/ kultur-bibliotek/museer/modellstaden

WALK ALONG THE SEASHORE There is an excellent walking trail along the eastern and western shores of Mariehamn. The trail along the rocky seashore features newly-built ramps and stairs. Here you can enjoy the evening sun and views of the harbour entrance. The rocks also offer fine picnic spots with tables and benches. The trail on the lowland eastern side passes through residential areas with boat jetties and leads to the nature reserve of Tullarns Äng. ÖVERNÄSSTUGAN’S SUMMER CAFÉ Take a coffee break at the oldest house in Mariehamn. The red house at the southern end of Parkgatan street belonged to Övernäs village where the town of Mariehamn was founded in 1861. At the time the town was founded, the Övernäs village had only 33 inhabitants and a handful of farmsteads. Övernässtugan is the only house in Mariehamn remaining of the old village. The café is open Wednesday afternoons at 12–15 between 30 June and 28 July.

Many decades of history The city of Mariehamn was founded in 1861 and celebrated its 160th anniversary this year. To commemorate the celebrations, walk through Mariehamn’s neighborhoods and see how the town has developed. Mariehamn had an exceptionally grand town plan of its time with large blocks and two esplanades crossing each other. One of the main characteristics of Mariehamn is the Esplanade, a broad linden alley between the Eastern and the Western harbour. The linden trees in six rows have given Mariehamn the epithet ”the town of a thousand linden trees”. At the turn of the 20th century, Mariehamn was a popular seaside resort with plentiful wooden villas for town dwellers and their summer guests. Several of the villas are visible along streets like Södragatan and Mariegatan. SAILING TOWARDS PROSPERITY Many successful shipowners lived in Mariehamn and in 1939 several monumental buildings were completed in the town. They 98 – www.aland.com

became symbols for the prosperity generated by shipping. In addition to the Town Hall and the building of the navigation institute, the merchant houses Cityhuset and Borenius House at Torggatan 5 and 9 were built. LEAFY SUBURBS In the 1950s, more people moved to Mariehamn during the years of increased welfare. A new residential area in a time-typical style emerged along Öhbergsvägen and the southern part of Torggatan. The gardens are large, but the houses are relatively modest. Regular ferry traffic was started in 1959 and led to an economic upswing in Åland. This also had an impact on the old town centre of Mariehamn. Older wooden houses were demolished and new department stores were built. Since then, the city has grown both south and north. One of the relatively new residential areas is Storgärdan next to Gröna Udden’s campsite.

MARIEHAMN

LIBRARY STORIES The beautiful municipal library of Mariehamn is wellstocked. Apart from borrowing books, you can find a wide range of daily papers and magazines. There is a generous section for kids, and a special Alandica collection with books written in and about Åland. The library arranges arts exhibitions as well as music and theatre performances, especially for children. Visit the library at Strandgatan 29.

EDUCATIONAL WETLAND At the very end of the sea bay of Slemmern at Nabben, on the eastern side of Mariehamn, there is a newly constructed wetland open for visitors. The purpose of the wetland is to purify rainwater that flows into the bay and protect biological diversity. Meadow flowers have been sown on the banks to attract butterflies and bumblebees. There are also nesting boxes for birds and the wetland has been stocked with pike fry. The area is accessible with trails and ramps and there are benches to sit down. Information boards highlight notable flora and fauna in the area.

BOATYARD IN THE MARITIME QUARTER The Maritime Quarter is the centre for Åland crafts and boat building traditions. The area is always open for visitors. The galeas ship Emelia is currently being constructed and is estimated to take several years. The ribs for the hull of the Emelia are constructed outdoors and you can see the vessel taking shape. There are two special museums, a maritime chapel for sailors, a port for wooden ships, arts and crafts shops and a restaurant. The Maritime Quarter is also the home port of the cruise ship Sunnan II.

Beach volleyball, swimming centre and skate park Anyone in the family who likes to skateboard? The skatepark is located next to the library and is free to use. The skate park with various ramps was opened in Mariehamn a couple of years ago. It is centrally located below the library and next to Alandica Culture and Congress Hall. The park is free to use for everyone and here you can meet like-minded skaters! BEACH VOLLEY AND SWIMMING CENTRE If you like beach volleyball, Mariehamn is the place for you. There is one court on Nabben beach, one on Lilla Holmen and three courts on the beach next to Mariebad swimming centre.

Mariebad is the swimming centre for all the family! Here you can swim in a regular eight-lane pool, or you can relax and enjoy the adventure pool with a water slide, massage jets, jacuzzi and a small heated outdoor pool, and a kiddie pool for the youngest ones. Massage and wellness treatments can be booked upstairs. BATHING BEACHES Mariebad has a sandy beach next door. There are three bathing beaches in town at Nabben, Lilla Holmen and by the campsite of Gröna Udden. All of these are child-friendly, Nabben being the shallowest one.

PLAYGROUNDS Mariehamn has many playgrounds with swings, slides and climbing frames. Playgrounds are located at the town square, next to Alandica Culture House, and on Lilla Holmen. There is also a playground next to the Swedish Consulate, near ÅSS marina. 100 – www.aland.com

DISC GOLF AT BADHUSPARKEN Badhusparken has a beautiful location on a hill above the Western harbour. The view over the sailing ship Pommern and ÅSS visitors’ marina is great. The 9-hole disc golf course is set amidst tall pine trees and lower crooked pines growing on the rocks. Discs can be bought at a local sports shop or you rent them in a nearby ice cream kiosk or at Åland tourist information office at Storagatan.

EXERCISE OUTDOORS! Next to Idrottsparken in Mariehamn there is a short jogging track with varying terrain. There is an outdoor gym for everyone to use 24/7. Baltichallen in southern Mariehamn also has a jogging track of a couple of kilometres and an outdoor gym.

STATUE FOR SITTKOFF Nikolai Sittkoff (1828–1887) stands as a statue at Torggatan street, next to the shopping arcade that carries his name. Sittkoff was a leading merchant in town at the time Mariehamn was founded. He dominated the merchant life in the town with his own shops and had his say in all matters concerning Mariehamn. Sittkoff ran a shop at Strandgatan, roughly the same place where the shopping arcade is now. He was also a shipowner and provided the town-dwellers with products from distant lands.

Our campsite is located by the sea and within a walking distance from the centre of Mariehamn. Park your motorhome, pitch your tent on the campsite or treat yourself to a comfortable night in our cosy overnight cabins. The seaside area is beautiful with a beach sauna and child-friendly sandy beach for sunbathing and swimming. You can also play mini golf or rent a bicycle for your own day trips. Do you want to enjoy a little extra of the holiday life? We recommend a visit to our café, this year with a new pizza kitchen, summer bar and glazed terrace. Enjoy ice cream and fresh summer meals, we have lots of treats on the menu.
