earty Good Wishes was inspired by
my seaside childhood, the shipping
forecast and an Edwardian Christmas card! Nowadays I live in a town nowhere near the sea and really miss it. So, I listen to the poetic shipping forecast on BBC Radio 4 instead and imagine all the ships and sailors out at sea. One day I found a little Christmas card sent by ‘Eva’ in 1915. And it got me thinking about the coast at Christmas time, in the

very depths of winter when it’s bold and bracing. I love the coast then don’t you? So, here’s to the coast in winter: to the waves, the spray, the wild salty air and the rosy cheeks...Hearty good wishes to you!

I
have always gotten a kick out of the creative names quilt guilds come up with. In this line of fabric I wanted to do a focal piece using graphics
of notions, cute guild names, and some of my favorite guilty quotes. I did most of the drawing and writing using a pen and ink which lent itself well to the aged look I was going for. The sepia tone of the ink I used was the first color in this design. Playing with the ink I soon found it actually had several shades of brown that felt really warm and cozy to me. I wanted to add some shades of blue to the mix of browns and I came up with a blueish colonial tealish twist!

In
the first years of the 20th century, Madeline traveled the road between Chicago and the family farm in western Michigan. The road was called Michigan Avenue and it went from the bustling city on Lake Michigan to the shores of western Michigan - across the Great Lake. The area Madeline lived in was called Grant Park near Chicago, at first she traveled by horses pulling buggies, but soon the automobile was the way to travel. The road went through town after town. It was the main thoroughfare and the business center of each village. In many villages she would stop to shop at the general store to buy cloth - her favorite extravagance. She had cabinets full of favorite purchases along with older pieces she collected from cousins, aunts and grandmothers. Every piece of cloth reminded her of the summer trips along the great road and every piece of cloth was made into her wardrobe - and her special quilts

ishes is all about the many celebrations of life- from birthdays and anniversaries to the birth of a new baby. The colors are bright and happy and the designs remind us of fun times. We were inspired by our own celebrations, both big and small. Each design represents part of the celebration. Our favorites include the colorful “wrapping paper”, the cute flags from the “cake topper” and the gingham “tablecloth”. Although we love all the colors in the collection, we are especially drawn to the blue. It is our new favorite color and we love how it pairs with red and green. We also love how the collection is geared to both boys and girls and we think it would make adorable baby quilts.

I’ve
always loved collecting
things, odd things...receipts from a road trip, pennies found on walks, and bits of images from newspapers and magazines. I rarely know why I’m gathering these things, but I like the act of collecting.
I think of this group in terms of collections. Not just a collection in the literal sense of the word, but an amassing of images that I’ve encountered along the way, scooped up without really knowing why, and watched emerge here in the patterning for From Outside In. I encountered these patterns, out there, somewhere, and they’ve made their way through my brush or stamp here to be newly encountered as line or color or shape.

inspired by my love of creating with fabric and all the tools that make it happen. My love of sewing came from my grandmother, my mom and her sisters. They grew up sewing their own clothes and, when I was young, clothes for me, too. As I got older I moved from creating fashions for my dolls to to clothes for myself. Mom taught me to read patterns and we would enjoy “tag-team-sewing” on her vinatge treadle machine. I pinned and cut while she stitched away. Old, yet effiecient, that machine was a workhorse...it never jammed! I can never have enough pairs of scissors, full bobbins, colorful pins or colors of thread...It might be a sickness!
