Belonging •   WINTER 2020  •

This year’s all-school theme is Belonging  —  the fundamental human need to be seen, heard, and ultimately, affirmed. This theme reflects Miss Porter’s School’s commitment to the work of building a school community rooted in the inherent worth and dignity of each member. As I think about the all-school theme, I am proud of the ways Miss Porter’s School is creating the conditions and shared principles that allow for belonging. This work takes bravery, vulnerability, and practice, and I continue to be impressed  —  every day  —  by our girls, faculty, and administrators who are doing this hard work. You will see Belonging as the topic of our feature story, where you will have the opportunity to learn more about our intentional focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion; student leadership development; and health and wellness.

The theme of Belonging is also woven throughout this issue of the magazine in other ways. You will meet this year’s Nova Nine leaders, who have pledged to “foster a sense of community that everyone can belong to.” You’ll drop in on a conversation between Dr. Gene Cassidy and his advisee, Darian Gordon ’20, where Darian explains, “an advisor helps you know that you belong here.” And you’ll learn how, beyond Farmington, Ancient Carolyne Ouya ’10 is helping others find their sense of belonging. I know you will be impressed by the many ways our community is committed to building belonging on campus and on the journey that follows.

Building an Inclusive Community

Far from home, family, and friends, Jennifer Kang said it took time to adjust to life at Miss Porter’s School. Then, a class project and a special bond with a new friend changed everything.

Miss Porter’s School

“I’d never spoken to her before that project,” recalls Jennifer, now a senior. “I ended up connecting with her so deeply that my life really transformed from that time on. After that, I truly felt I’d found my place.”

12

Belonging is this year’s theme at Miss Porter’s School, as students investigate and discuss what it means to belong throughout the year in the classroom, at student retreats, in workshops, and over three special Community Days. The theme also serves as the vision for the renewal of the student life program, with intentional programming in diversity, equity, and inclusion; student leadership development; and health and wellness. The theme of belonging builds on previous years’ themes: “Leading with Empathy,” “Challenging Assumptions,” and “Confronting Ourselves,” shares Chief Enrollment and Student Affairs Officer Liz Schmitt.

13

COMMUNITY DAYS

Community Days allow students and faculty members to take a deep dive into a topic of importance to our community, rooted in the all-school theme of belonging. Pictured above: Students participating in the September 13 Community Day centered around the theme of race and identity.

During the September 13 Community Day, Dr. Liza Talusan facilitated conversations about diversity, racism, bias, and privilege, and students participated in a variety of breakout sessions by grade.

Often, having these conversations means using empathy to try to understand another’s point of view. A defining moment for senior McKenzie Roller came when she traveled to South Africa for InterMission, and found herself on a bus with the basketball team from the African Leadership Academy.

“Belonging is a beautiful concept. Everyone should feel valued, heard, and affirmed,” Ms. Schmitt told students during this year’s Opening Convocation. “I believe that with my whole heart. But what our theme requires is not just that we believe it but that we build it.” Ms. Schmitt referenced the book “The Person You Mean to Be: How Good People Fight Bias” by Dolly Chugh, an award-winning social psychologist at NYU’s Stern School of Business. In it, Chugh talks about shifting one’s perspective from being a “good person”   —   or someone already fixed   —   to a good-ish person, with a growth mindset; someone who’s more likely to grow and evolve. Ms. Schmitt challenged all students to create pathways for inclusion in their lives, even if that means having difficult conversations about identity, bias, and assumptions.

Miss Porter’s School

At the beginning of the year, students watched the independent documentary film “I’m Not Racist, Am I?” and participated in workshops afterward designed to dig deeper. “Race plays a huge role in how belonging is seen and felt, and we have an obligation to bring that to the forefront for all of our students,” notes Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer Susan Martell Jenkin. “At the end of the day, I hope students find their place in this conversation regardless of their identities.”

14

Seniors held discussion groups around identity and race during the September 13 Community Day.

“I was the only white girl on the bus, and this was the first time I’d ever experienced anything like that,” McKenzie says. “Although that comes nowhere close to what some people feel every day, that was the first moment where I felt that I belong, but I don’t really belong at the same time.” McKenzie’s experience fed her passion for exploring issues of social justice and inclusion, and reinvigorated her commitment to AWARE, the Association for White Anti-Racist Education. She’s also the co-head and founder of Face Up, a group that focuses on encouraging student activism on topics such as the impact of social media on youth, gun violence, and women’s reproductive rights, and works to make sure every perspective is heard, even if it means having difficult conversations. Junior Mariela Vazquez said she believes it will be important to address privilege during the year and what that means for those who have it and those who don’t.

Belonging

15

Juniors playing “The American Dream,”   the board game featured in the film “I’m Not Racist… Am I?”

“When I was a freshman, I struggled to find my sense of belonging, just because I was coming from a different socio-economic status,” says Mariela, who now is a tri-head of the Black and Latinx Alliance and is one of the heads of HOLA: Hispanic & Latinx Affinity. Exploring her own identity in campus groups, she said, helped her find belonging.

Director of Counseling Amanda Kice ’93 says students struggling with mental health can also feel disconnected. “People can feel really isolated, and feel they’re the only one who have struggles with anxiety or sadness or a whole host of things, and it’s so important that they know they’re not the only ones,” says Ms. Kice. “For example, some of our new and returning students really struggled with homesickness at the beginning of the year. They all belong to our community and Seniors held discussion it’s important to know that’s something groups around race and we’re all feeling.”

During the year, the Black and Latinx Alliance will host a sit-down dinner where prompts at the table will encourage students to talk about their identities, communities and backgrounds. “I hope identity during the September this year, having this theme of belonging At the core of Belonging, the Porter’s 13 Community Day. will allow me to learn more about other health and wellness team believes that people’s cultural norms and traditions,” says Mariela. Porter’s students must feel safe, healthy, and well“While I know I have felt marginalized at times, I’m supported. Interactive sessions around health and sure there are other people out there that I can’t relate wellness were the focus of the October 11 Worthy of to that might be feeling like they don’t belong in Wellness Community Day and health fair. Director a different way than me.” of Nursing Georgia Burman ’00 explains, “Our students

Miss Porter’s School

have made it clear that they want to discuss mental health, consent, the #MeToo Movement, healthy relationships, mindfulness, sexuality, digital and social media’s effect on student’s lives, and self-care. At our core, we’re social beings. And in order to be healthy, we have to feel good. And in order to feel good, we need to feel like we belong.”

16

Ms. Burman is working to make the infirmary on campus more inclusive and broader in scope. “We’re more than the little infirmary on the corner,” she adds. “Our new vision is more the analogy of the tree with many branches. We want students to feel health and wellness touches many aspects of their lives here at Porter’s.”

Miss Porter’s School faculty members are also discussing belonging and looking at ways to forge more pathways to inclusion. Rather than trying to make all Porter’s students fit into one mold, faculty members look for ways to celebrate and honor student individuality, says Chief Academic Officer and Dean of Faculty Tim Quinn. “Belonging shows up in how we teach and what we teach,” Mr. Quinn says. “There are different pathways that girls can take through the curriculum, so they shouldn’t feel like there’s just one type of Porter’s student. We also want to make sure that students see themselves in the curriculum. We use the metaphor of mirrors and windows. They should see themselves, thus the mirror, but they should also see others as well.”

Belonging

17

Worthy of Wellness featured our own health experts, health and wellness coaches, practitioners, and therapists. Here, students explored the wellness benefits that come from tending to living things.

The idea behind the school theme is not only to strengthen the community of belonging at Porter’s, but in the wider world. Ms. Schmitt explains, “The call to action begins with the community we want to build here at Miss Porter’s School. Learning to be a goodish person committed to their own growth, creating pathways for inclusion in the spaces we enter, and interrupting bias in order to create new social norms is something we can practice here and take with us as we journey elsewhere.” Senior Lila Conners, this year’s Student Head of School, told students they’d make mistakes along the way, but to embrace them. “As your Student Head of School, I commit to challenging my assumptions, confronting myself, leading with empathy so we can cultivate a community of belonging,” Lila pledged in her remarks. Senior Kami Vigilant, Head of Diversity this year, encouraged all students to stretch out of their comfort zones during a recent campus speech, noting,“The more you learn, the more you do, and the more we all do better.”

ADVISOR CONVERSATION OVERHEARD

Miss Porter’s School

We joined History Teacher Gene Cassidy and one of his advisees, Darian Gordon ’20, who discussed what makes their advisor/advisee connection so special.

22

Gene Cassidy

According to Dr. Cassidy, “[Advisors] act as a liaison, and also an advocate. Ultimately I’m here for the girls and my time with my advisees… makes me feel... significant.” Darian explains, “One of the things that really hits you when you’re here is that you’re suddenly around all these powerhouses of women. You’re around so many people that are so sure of what they’re doing. And sometimes you fumble, you fall, and think, do I belong here? Do I deserve to be here? So having Gene there to talk to… it’s very reassuring. An advisor helps you know that you belong here.”

DG:   What are your favorite topics that we discuss? GC:   I like hearing you explain to me how you’re going to get past something.

“Go learn about where you are… learn a piece of the language or the culture, don’t just be there to be there.” GC:   What do you think makes advisory dinner so special?

DG:   Really? GC:   Yeah! That makes me really

happy because even when you get off track you say, “Here’s what I’m going to be doing to make sure that I right that ship.” I like to talk about your problems because you always talk about your solutions. DG:   I really like talking about our families and just how we’re doing in general. It’s like there is a world outside of here where everything is going pretty smoothly, and it kind of relaxes me. GC:   How have I opened your eyes to new ideas? DG:   You make me see the world a little differently. You went… where did you go over the summer? GC:   Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. DG:   And you saw museums. I would never go to Portugal and Morocco and see museums! I would go to the beach or something. But in my head now I have Gene’s voice [saying],

DG:   You know that feeling you get when you’re around family and something in you settles? That’s advisory dinner, especially because we get Naples and play Uno. GC:   Years from now, what do you think will be the thing you remember about me? DG:   I’ve never met somebody with as much enthusiasm for what they’re doing. You lift us up. You’re like a light when you’re in a really dark tunnel. GC:   It’s the person that I’ve always tried to be. And the nice thing about this place is it lets me do that.

HEAD OF SCHOOL

Lila Conners ’20 HOMETOWN

HER PORTER’S EXPERIENCE

Niskayuna, New York

At Porter’s, I’ve grown into who I am as a person and who I am supposed to be.

ON BEING HEAD OF SCHOOL

I decided to run for head of school because I love Porter’s and I thought I would be a good representative of the entire student body. I’m really excited to make change on campus, but preserve what makes Porter’s so special.

LACROSSE FOR LIFE

Lacrosse has always been a part of my life. I have been playing the game since I was eight or nine years old. I love the competition and working on a team.

SECOND HEAD OF SCHOOL

Kelly Ray ’20 FIGHTING AGAINST “CAN’T”

When people tell you that you can’t do something, you have to dig down deeper and find the motivation in your core and fight for what you believe in. Most of the time people will believe in you if you’re really passionate. HER PORTER’S EXPERIENCE

I chose to come to Porter’s because I really wanted a more challenging academic environment, and the all-girls’ sisterhood stood out to me. HEAD OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Miss Porter’s School

ON BEING HEAD OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES

26

As head of student activities, I want everyone to feel included with the weekend activities. By working with clubs and alliances you can involve the whole community in one activity. It just shows your support is always present.

A SPECIAL PLACE ON CAMPUS

I think the patio outside the Daisy really represents me because on nice days I can sit out and do my homework. Even if it’s raining my friends and I will go and sit under the umbrellas and talk. I think that’s where some of my best memories are from.

HEAD OF DIVERSITY

Kami Vigilant ’20 UNDERSTANDING HER POWER

Porter’s has given me the platform to be able to understand the power that I have and understand the potential I truly have. Getting to really branch out and understand where my passions lie and how to best facilitate them  —  Porter’s has really given me a good spot to be confident and comfortable with that. TALKING ABOUT DIVERSITY

I want people to no longer feel uncomfortable talking about diversity, and that means in every aspect, not just race, sexuality, and gender, but everything. I want people to see the beauty in being different than everyone else.

CO-HEAD OF MAIN

Linda Cai ’20 HOMETOWN

Shandong, China ON BEING CO-HEAD OF MAIN

I make posters and art for Main and also organize sit-down dinners. I wanted to be co-head of Main because I really care about the school, and I wanted to contribute by making artwork that would inspire people and bring joy in Main Parlors and beyond. PREPARED FOR LIFE

Porter’s has really prepared me for life after school, I know time management, I know how to socialize with people, I know what it means to have people support you and to have a community behind you. HER PORTER’S EXPERIENCE

I think Porter’s enables me to pursue my passions and to go for what I really want to do. I want to use the skills Porter’s has given me to change the world.

CO-HEAD OF MAIN

Mayrra Sardjito ’20 HOMETOWN

HER PORTER’S EXPERIENCE

Jakarta, Indonesia

At Porter’s, I really learned how to express myself and find myself as a person. It’s taught me if I can handle the workload at Porter’s, I can handle anything.

FAVORITE TRADITION:

Little Meeting ON BEING CO-HEAD OF MAIN

I have always wanted to be the co-head of Main since I came here as a New Girl sophomore. I loved seeing all the posters everywhere, they made me really happy and I wanted to do that for others. I want people to go into Main and feel welcomed. Art makes people happy, so that’s what I want to do.

PREPARED FOR LIFE

Porter’s has given me the tools that were necessary to grow into the person that I am; it has given me resources and prepared me for life in general.

HEAD OF ATHLETICS

I love Porter’s dining hall, because it’s a place where everyone gathers to relax, grab a snack, and hang out. I love taking me-time and I love eating, but it’s also a place where you can do work and get help if you need it; there is always someone there. It’s a nice, comforting place where you can just enjoy yourself.

LITTLE THINGS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

28

By doing little things for other people, you can really make a difference in someone else’s day, and you can impact the world by doing that.

29 CO-HEAD OF NEW GIRLS

Leaders Belong Here

Natalie Brennan ’20 ON USING HER VOICE

Porter’s has taught me that I have a voice and I shouldn’t be afraid to use it. You need to be bold in what you want. I wanted to run for co-head of New Girls, I wanted to make a change, and you have to be willing to take the first step. CHANGING THE WORLD

I want to be a person that is not afraid to step up. I want to be a girl who lifts up and embodies the voice of other girls because we are important, and we are going to change the world.

CO-HEAD OF NEW GIRLS

Tyler Smith ’20 HOMETOWN

Harlem, New York ON BEING CO-HEAD OF NEW GIRLS

I decided to run for co-head of New Girls because my Old Girl held this role and made me feel really loved and welcomed. I think everyone knows they are loved and cared for, but some days you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, or you have a really tough test, and a little reminder that you are still important, you’re still loved, that’s what I want to remind people about. HER PORTER’S EXPERIENCE

Porter’s has made me a bolder and more confident person. I feel more confident and sure of myself, and I know that I have had so many leadership opportunities here that wherever I go to college, I won’t be afraid to take new risks or apply for leadership positions.

Reunion 2019 Miss Porter’s School 30

Classes ending in 4s and 9s enjoyed a wonderful Reunion 2019! Held September 20 through 22, the weekend offered opportunities for Ancients to connect with classmates as well as current students and faculty, including visits to the Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab and a tour and discussion of Farmington and the Freedom Trail. Another highlight was an interactive panel discussion titled “Ancients are Shaping a Changing World: Addressing Social Challenges.” Panelists Tracy Gary ’69, Pat Mueller ’74, Andrea Hailey ’99, and Catherine Lindroth ’04 talked about being agents of change in the areas of education, media relations, politics, and philanthropy.

New this year, class meetings were also a big hit, with topics including: navigating the college process, with Dean of College Counseling Amy Rogers P’22; healthy tech habits, led by Gigi Mortimer ’79; Zumba, led by Naya Bricher ’09; a self reflection and writing exercise, led by Charlotte Matthews ’84; access and affordability at Porter’s, with Chief Enrollment and Student Affairs Officer Liz Schmitt P’19 and Director of Admission Sarah Quinn; and the importance of the all-female Ancient network, led by Chrishaunda Lee Perez ’94. A special thanks to Jenna Moniz ’94, who was the homilist for the Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving. S’mores by the firepit, class photos, and the All-School Dinner rounded out the weekend.

“[when I] hear, ‘Shape a changing world,’ I’ll think about how Miss Porter’s taught me that we need to look out for one another and be invested in changing the world for the better.”

Carolyne Ouya ’10 Helping Others Find their Sense of Belonging

W

hen Carolyne Ouya came to Miss Porter’s School as a first-year student in 2006, she faced more than the usual challenges. Five weeks before the start of school, Carolyne’s father passed away.

“I asked myself, am I still going to this school? What am I doing?” said Carolyne, whose family emigrated from Kenya to Atlanta, Georgia when she was young. “It was difficult. I didn’t think I had time to process everything that was happening, but I knew I had the opportunity of a lifetime. It was hard, but I truly commend Porter’s for how they handled it. I remember they were informed and next thing you know, I was surrounded by a team… They made sure to look out for me.” That sense of community and belonging she found at Miss Porter’s School informs her work with Access Inc. Youth and Immigration Services, a nonprofit that provides workforce development for 16 to 24-year-olds who have dropped out of high school. Carolyne provides career coaching, helps families looking to start their own businesses, and also works as a legal advocate in the

Violence Against Women Act Legal Program, assisting women who may be victims of domestic violence, sexual assault or human trafficking. “I meet a lot of families similar to mine, immigrants trying to figure it out, and they may have experienced some kind of tragedy, too,” she said. “I sit with them, and I say, ‘hey, I see you.’ I really understand what that feels like.” Carolyne’s experience at Miss Porter’s School helped her become the advocate she is today as she keeps the mission of the school in mind. “Miss Porter’s changed my life,” she said. “With my work every day, I walk closely with the idea of shaping a changing world. The work I do is difficult and burn-out is real. There are days I’m so exhausted, where I see there are more people than resources, and yet, inside, I’ll hear, ‘Shape a changing world.’ I’ll think about how Miss Porter’s taught me that we need to look out for one another and be invested in changing the world for the better.”

•  FAMILY WEEKEND   •

Sunshine and smiles were abundant during this year’s Family Weekend! Families experienced beautiful fall weather as they spent time with their favorite Porter’s girl. While on campus, families visited classes, attended grade level and Alliance family receptions, spent time speaking with faculty members and Head of School Kate Windsor, participated in Bowlathon workshops in the ceramics studio, and enjoyed music and Dance Workshop performances. Families and their students also attended a talk by New York Times writer and author Frank Bruni, who wrote this year’s Porter’s community read, “Where You Go is Not Who You’ll Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania.”

Macomber ribbon cutting ceremony

•  MACOMBER   •

Macomber, the newest dorm on campus The renovation of 36 Main Street has created a beautiful home for our students! This gothic revival style-house circa 1873 is now Macomber, our newest dorm on campus, housing 14 students. The home was given to Miss Porter’s School in 1952 by the Gay family and has served many purposes over the years: home to former Head of School Skip Hance and his family; Weekend House, where visitors could stay; and, most recently, as the Alumnae and Development Office. Thanks to the generosity of the Macomber family, we were able to “repurpose this gem on campus,” according to Director of Campus Planning and Design Katie Bradley, who was part of the team that oversaw the building’s transformation.

I invited Leela because we had met during a Porter’s event a long time ago (a dinner for Students of Color at Porter’s, where she expressed to me that she had an interest in journalism/ media, psychology and neuroscience, all of which are areas I also am passionate about!) to show her what it’s like to be a graduate student in this field, especially at NYU.”

REMEMBRANCES

•  IN MEMORIAM   •

“Teaching leadership to every girl, not just those who aspire to it or those elected to it, but every girl, is inherent in our school mission. Leadership is part of the curriculum, explicitly and implicitly. It is central to each girl’s education and her experience at MPS. What better beginning, then, for her to make her mark in the world beyond?” —  M. Burch Tracy Ford

Remembrances

43

M. Burch Tracy Ford Head of School 1993–2008

Miss Porter’s School was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Head of School M. Burch Tracy Ford on October 2, 2019. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and resided in Concord, Massachusetts at the time of her death.

“Here at Farmington, with the guidance and support of teachers in and outside of the classroom, our students are learning to think independently, critically, and creatively, about the facts of life and the stuff of dreams, all in order to sharpen their convictions and to develop the courage to act on those convictions as scholars, artists, athletes, friends, and leaders in both academic and social settings.” —  M. Burch Tracy Ford Mrs. Ford attended Trinity College in Washington, D.C., before leaving to join the Peace Corps, where she served for two years in a social center in Senegal, West Africa. After returning to the United States, she graduated from Boston University and then earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Simmons College. Mrs. Ford worked as a private therapist and as the first full-time residential counselor at Groton School, where she worked for 10 years, before joining Milton Academy as dean of students. Mrs. Ford served as the head of Miss Porter’s School from 1993 to 2008, and touched the lives of thousands of students, Ancients, and colleagues. She strongly believed that the best learning happens in the context of relationships, and she modeled this each and every day of her life.

Under Mrs. Ford’s leadership, Miss Porter’s School transformed in a myriad of ways. Among the many notable accomplishments of Mrs. Ford’s 15-year tenure are: a new library, now named the M. Burch Tracy Ford Library; the Pool and Squash Building; an emphasis on the school’s athletics program, including rejoining the Founders League; the Annual Fund exceeding $1 million for the first time; and the successful conclusion of a $50 million capital campaign. The list goes on and on, and Mrs. Ford’s impact is felt today and will be for decades to come. Mrs. Ford was a remarkable woman, a tremendous leader, and a generous friend to all. Her legacy lives on through the generations of lives she touched as an educator. Mrs. Ford is survived by her husband, Brian; her children, Randall and Winfield; Randolph’s wife, Tianlin Wang Ford; and her granddaughters, Elizabeth Corrigan Wang Ford and Rosamund Burch Wang Ford. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her.

“As adults and educators, we must teach our young, in this case 300 splendid girls, to learn the languages of life. That means starting with English, but other tongues are essential as well: the language of history, the language of art and music; the languages of science and math; and, of course, the languages of those around the world who did not begin their lives speaking English.” —  M. Burch Tracy Ford

Men of Porter’s Give Back When Mike Lech sent his daughter, Soleil ’22, off to Miss Porter’s School last year as a first-year student, his commitment didn’t stop there.

“I believe that the role and responsibility of the parent doesn’t end with the last tuition payment and dropping our daughter off at campus,” Mr. Lech said. “It actually starts there.”

Alexandria Black ’20 Enjoys photography and has earned recognition for her work.

Mike and Kara Lech recently pledged a significant six-figure gift to Miss Porter’s School in the name of their daughter, who’s currently a sophomore. Mr. Lech is one of a growing number of male relatives becoming more active in the school, both in terms of financial support and in donating time and other resources. The Men of Porter’s, who all have connections to the school through loved ones, have gathered formally and informally to discuss giving back to the school. Chief Advancement Officer Christine Pina explained, “We noticed the large number of men who were making philanthropic gifts in honor of the Ancients in their lives. The men were fathers, husbands, sons, brothers, grandfathers,

nephews, any male relationship you could imagine. When we approached these donors to ask why they made their gifts they said they liked this idea of bringing men together to support the school and Ancients in and around the world. It’s really all about creating a stronger partnership with the men who care so deeply about our mission and are champions of the school.” Bob Deutsch, whose daughters, Allison ’07 and Katie ’09, attended Miss Porter’s School, counts himself among the Men of Porter’s. “The world needs strong women in families, businesses, government, social causes, and the list goes on,” Mr. Deutsch said. “Single-sex schools, especially at the high school level, are critical to developing strong girls and leading them on the path towards becoming strong women. This is a cause that should be supported by both fathers and mothers, plain and simple.” Don Black, who is actively involved in the Parent Leadership Committee and whose daughters, Alexandria ’20 and Victoria ’22, attend Miss Porter’s, said the Men of Porter’s can help build a stronger community.

“The presence of fathers in the community, I hope, reminds our daughters that they are cared for and loved by us,” said Mr. Black, whose wife, Dorre, is part of the healthcare team at Miss Porter’s School. “That their dreams and journey are just as important to us as are the dreams and journey of sons. That they have our full support, and their joy is our joy, and their challenges are our concerns. That we are willing to come alongside them as they strive to live out their values in a challenging season of growth.” Mr. Lech explained that the Men of Porter’s help strengthen commitment to a shared cause. “As a father, it’s beautiful to see other fathers who share the same ideologies and who also view their daughters as having limitless potential. When you gather together in a room and you talk about how you can help to bolster the community that is going to create a path for your daughter, it’s amazing what you can accomplish,” Mr. Lech said. “It’s not just a $10 million gift, it’s $100 a month for a year that has just as much of an impact. Or it’s just time: it’s coming to campus, helping to coordinate a speaker that helps make the community stronger. So it’s not just giving huge sums of money, it’s being connected to the community.”

•  THANK YOU DONORS   •

Throughout 2018, we celebrated 175 years of Sarah Porter’s vision by telling the story of the school today. Our celebration   —   which included our second Worldwide Sit-Down Dinner as well as the All-School Reunion   —   culminated in the groundbreaking Sotheby’s “By Women, for Tomorrow’s Women” auction of works by female artists, through which we raised an historic $3.3 million for student financial aid endowment. This year, we raised nearly $11 million, including a recordbreaking $2.65 million in support of the Annual Fund. These gifts support programs including InterMission, athletics, faculty development, and student activities, and allow us to keep the promise of our mission statement.

Miss Porter’s School

We are deeply grateful to our dedicated volunteers and to our donors: the Ancients, students, parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, spouses, and friends whose generosity allows us to be the school of consequence for girls. Thank you for your ongoing support of Miss Porter’s School.

By Women, for Tomorrow’s Women —  Sotheby’s and Miss Porter’s School Auction

50

In March of 2019 Miss Porter’s School partnered with Sotheby’s Auction House to present By Women, For Tomorrow’s Women   —   The First-Ever All-Women Artist Benefit Auction at a major auction house. Porter’s advanced art history students assisted with the research and preparation of the auction catalog during their InterMission internships, and 38 pieces by 40 pioneering women artists were included in the auction   —   including a major abstract painting by Carmen Herrera. The painting, Blanco y Verde of 1966-67, is the most important work by the artist ever to appear at auction. Agnes Gund ‘56 and Oprah Winfrey, longtime supporters of the school, served as honorary co-chairs for By Women, For Tomorrow’s Women. The auction raised more than $3M for student financial aid, enabling emerging female leaders to attend Miss Porter’s School and go on to shape a changing world.

•  FOUNDER SOCIETY   •

224 DONOR PARTICIPANTS

The Farmington Founder Society was established in 1973 to recognize the leadership donors whose generosity sustains the school. The dedication and commitment of Founder Society members helps to ensure the continued excellence and competitiveness of Miss Porter’s School. During the 2018–2019 year, 224 Ancients, parents, past parents, grandparents and friends supported the school with gifts of $2,500 or more. Gifts made by members of the Founder Society totaled $5,385,562, representing 91 percent of all gifts to the school. Additionally, 196 donors participated in the Annual Fund at the leadership level, contributing a total of $1,870,206,976, which comprised 78 percent of the Annual Fund total. The generous support of the 2018–2019 Founder Society donors allows our students to explore, grow, and succeed both in the classroom and beyond. Miss Porter’s School is deeply grateful to these donors.

The continued growth of the Annual Fund depends on two equally important factors: increased support each year from current donors and new gifts from others. The Annual Fund supports every facet of the school community, from financial aid and faculty salaries to academic enhancements and facility upgrades. Ancient giving to the Annual Fund is another in a long line of traditions at Miss Porter’s School.

•  REUNION GIVING   •

Reunion Giving The first-ever All-School Reunion, celebrating Miss Porter’s School’s 175th Anniversary, was held September 20–22, 2018. We welcomed over 600 Ancients representing 67 classes back to Farmington. Throughout the weekend, Ancients explored a variety of events and enjoyed opportunities to connect, learn, reflect, and converse. Highlights included Friday’s Little Meeting performances, where Ancients showcased their many talents; wellness workshops designed to rejuvenate body and soul; the “50 Years of Us: Educating African-American Girls at Miss Porter’s School” panel discussion; and, of course, the All-School Dinner, which was held Saturday evening  —  followed by a surprise fireworks display!

Led by the Parent Leadership Committee Co-Chairs Kathleen Kadziolka and Remy Schwartz, current parents raised $480,263 and reached 58.6 percent participation. This statistic sends a strong message about the value parents place on their daughters’ education at Porter’s. The school is grateful to our co-chairs, along with the Parent Leadership Committee for their work, and to each of the families that contributed to the Annual Fund this year.

•  MOONBEAMS CIRCLE   •

The Moonbeams Circle The Moonbeams Circle, formerly The Heritage Society, of Miss Porter’s School was established by the Board of Trustees in 1992 to honor individuals who have included the school in their estate plans. The school is grateful to those listed below who have demonstrated their visionary leadership by including the school in their estate plans. Among the various types of planned gifts that are recognized by membership in Moonbeams Circle are bequests, IRA gifts and beneficiary designations, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts and gifts of property and life insurance. The school values the opportunity to recognize those forward-thinking individuals who are making an especially personal and meaningful gift through their estate plans. Donors are encouraged to let Susan Walker know of their plans, if they have not already done so.

•  ENDOWMENT FUNDS   •

Endowment Funds The school’s endowment offsets over 17 percent of the school’s annual budget. The endowment is made up of more than 300 funds for faculty support, academic and extracurricular programs, scholarships and other areas of operation. Of the utmost importance, unrestricted endowment provides the school with the resource to support current operations, respond to opportunities, and adapt to future needs. The school is grateful for those whose thoughtfulness and generosity continues to provide essential support through these endowment funds. Augmenting an existing named endowed fund is a way to honor classmates, parents, daughters or others. During the 2018–2019 year, the following named endowment funds were augmented, with new gifts or pledge payments. New funds established between July 1, 2018 and September 15, 2019 are in italics.

Miss Porter’s School

Lauren and Ava are the creators of Women’s Activist Organization (WAO), a student-led group focusing on feminist empowerment, education, and support.

60 Main Street Farmington, CT 06032

“Belonging is when everyone feels like their identity is respected and celebrated and that was our goal. We want our organization to be about women supporting women. One of the most important meetings with our advisor — where we talked about our vision — was in this gazebo.”
