greatest success was forming an auctioneering business with his partner Gilbert Martin back in 1974, and over the years it transformed into De Deur Flea Market, a business that is still thriving today. Tokyo Sexwale once visited the market and couldn’t believe how many people generated their only income from their trading at the De Deur Flea Market. It is hard to think that one man’s dream has brought several thousand people together, and gives over a thousand people work. Frank retired in 2013, and spent his last years playing bowls, travelling around with his caravan, visiting his family in Australia and even sharing his love of poker with others. He is survived by his sister Sylvia, brother Jimmy, his five children Clint, Terry, Tracy, Debbie, Wesley and nine grandchildren. Family was everything to Frank, and despite distance, he maintained a close relationship with all of them over the years. Frank’s legacy lives on, and he is fondly remembered by so many. Well-known Frank Mann passes on Local businessman, Frank Mann, probably best remembered as the face of De Deur Flea Market, sadly passed away in Vereeniging on November 11 aged 71. Frank was the youngest of four children, and the third of his generation to live in the Vaal Triangle. His grandfather arrived in South Africa from the UK in 1890. Early childhood saw Frank assist with the family’s productive fruit and poultry smallholding. Frank started school at the young age of 5 in 1950 at what is now the De Deur Primary School, and completed his high schooling at General Smuts High School. After school, he tried his hand at many things, but never settled in any. He drifted into the printing industry, then the railways where he managed to stay for three years, eventually becoming a steward on the Blue Train for a year. He even tried his hand as a private investigator. Frank was definitely an entrepreneur, and if anyone could get a business up and running, it was him. His personal motto “If you don’t do it, it won’t get done” drove him to be the founder of a number of small businesses, and he was also a keen property investor. His

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Die Ankerskool hou weer vanjaar Kersmark op 3 Desember van 09:00 tot 14:00. Verlede jaar se mark was ‘n reuse-sukses en die skool beplan om vanjaar daarop voort te bou. “Besoekers sal die geleentheid kry om ons alombekende, hoё kwaliteit produkte te koop. Jy sal ons egter vroeg moet besoek, want ons produkte verkoop soos soetkoek,” sê ‘n woordvoerder van die skool. Die leerlinge het baie hard gewerk gedurende 2016 en daarom kan daar vanjaar weer ‘n wye verskeidenheid kwaliteit produkte aan die publiek gebied word. Daar is byvoorbeeld meer as 100 braaiers, houtbankies, houttafels, bomas, skinkbordstelle, Kersversierings, fotorame en ‘n groot verskeidenheid ander hout- en staalartikels om van te kies. Ankerskool se dogters staan ook nie terug as dit kom by goeie gehalte produkte nie. Hulle artikels soos voorskote, plekmatjies, borsspelde en sleutelhouers sal ook van die hand gesit word. Besoekers sal die kans kry om ‘n verskeidenheid kunsmarkstalletjies by te woon, asook om hulle te verlustig aan die motoruitstallings van die Beetles, RSA-Club en Vaal Ouwiele. Maak gerus ook ‘n draai by die gesellige teetuin waar jy kan terugsit om ‘n heerlike koppie tee of koffie en ‘n verskeidenheid koeke en terte te geniet. Vir kinders en kleuters wag daar hope pret op die springkastele en ponieritte. Die dag sal verder opgekikker word deur die geselskap van Louis Fourie van IFM-radio, wat direk vanaf die skoolterrein sal uitsaai. “Bring jou hele gesin en kom geniet die dag saam met ons. “Kom geniet sommer ook jou middagete hier, wat jy by enige van die kosstalletjies sal kan koop,” nooi die organiseerders. Trek dus ‘n rooi kring om die datum, maak ‘n knoop in jou oor, en onthou om Die Ankerskool se Kersmark te besoek. Vaal girl brings change to community

VEREENIGING. - Debonair Park’s Siphesihle Matungana (17) in Grade 11 at the New Hope Secondary School is one of the six contestants in the country who managed to make it into the 2016 Future Leaders Series on SABC 1. The series documents the teens’ journey to become an agent of positive change in their communities. Siphesihle’s project aims to refurbish an informal piece of land within her community and turn it into a netball court as an alternative form of recreation for the youth. Siphesihle’s mentor, Sydney Madibo who has been by her side since the beginning of the series, says he has seen a significant change in her character. “The programme has assisted in bringing Siphesihle closer to her mother while also helping her to play a more active role in her community by resolving conflicts.” On Siphesihle’s project, Madibo says that upon completion, it must be a fullly functional netball court: “With regards to the project, a lot of boxes still need to be ticked, but I can already see a change in her. She is inspirational and she is a leader.”

Madibo says that building the recreational facility for the community has proven to be very tough as they have not had enough sponsors who can fully finance the court: “What Siphesihle has achieved is really big. She is the only one in the province who made it through and she deserves the support of her community and local government structures.” Siphesihle will develop a netball team, which will play for the Pink Drive, a national

campaign in support of cancer awareness. The game will also be used as a means of educating young women on the dangers of underage drinking. Die optog om ‘n laaste eer aan hom te betoon, het by die plek begin waar hy geskiet is en het daarna deur SE3 en ander dele van die dorp beweeg voordat dit weer by die beginpunt geëindig het. “Patrick se heengaan sal ons nie stop om

VEREENIGING. - Die Mount Ridge Radiobeheerklub in Arconpark het weer eens ‘n suksesvolle jaarlikse dag gehou ten bate van die Catherine Robson kinderhuis. Aanvanklik het die weer gedreig om die dag te ontsier, maar later die middag het radiobeheer-entoesiaste vir die jongklomp hulle vlieg

toertjies in die lug en bestuursvernuf op die renbaan vir motortjies gewys. Die kinders is getrakteer met ‘n ete en drinkgoed en ’n springkasteel het hulle besig gehou. Vir diè kinders is dit elke jaar een van hul geliefkoosde uitstappies en baie van hulle droom selfs daarvan om eendag dié gewilde sportsoort te beoefen.

71 000 aids patients are ‘missing’ in Gauteng Lerato Serero

SEDIBENG.- A large number of HIV/AIDS patients in the province cannot be accounted for by the Gauteng Department of Health and a large number of patients on ARV treatment cannot be traced. A total of 71 289 HIV/AIDS patients on anti-retroviral treatment have gone ‘missin’g in Gauteng. This was disclosed last week Friday at a Gauteng Legislature Health Committee meeting that considered the Second Quarter Report of the Gauteng Health Department which covers the July to September period this year. According to the report, there are 723 454 adult patients remaining on ARV treatment, as opposed to the target of 788 160, which indicates a “possible loss to follow-up of 64 706 patients.” Furthermore, 27 691 of 34 274 targeted children remained on ARV treatment, which indicates 6 583 missing children with interrupted ARV treatment. The department ascribes this to poor record-keeping, poor data quality management and incomplete data but opposition parties said that it seems that the problem is far broader than poor data management. TB treatment is also said to be suffering as the loss to follow-up of TB patients has also gone up to 5.8%, missing the 5.1% target.

Interrupted ARV treatment is extremely serious as patients can die from lack of treatment or develop drug resistance when they come back on treatment.Opposition parties, in particular the DA, said, “Strengthening the district health system with community health workers would help to reduce the number of missing AIDS and TB patients.” Meanwhile the DA has said that the Gauteng Provincial Government Departments owes DA governed municipalities in the province R443 million which is money desperately needed to address the service delivery backlog left behind by the ANC. Of the R613 million owed to all municipalities across the province, 72% of this will be split between the cities of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Mogale City. “It is impossible for municipalities to roll out quality services if the funding required to do so is not available. “Without it, business comes to a halt and residents are denied access to the heartbeat of democracy – a functioning local government.” The departments of Infrastructure Development, Health, Education, Roads and Transport, Social Development and Human Settlements have apparently failed to live up to their obligations to transfer funds which they received as grants from National Treasury to municipalities in the province.

25 learners stung by bees at General Smuts High Moleboheng Chaha

VEREENIGING. - General Smuts High School personnel last week had to deal with a crisis after about 22 school learners and three employees were stung by bees. The victims had to be rushed to different hospitals by emergency services called to the scene. According to the School’s headmaster J.Maré, the bees apparently got agitated by one of the workers cutting grass. “The attack by the bees was so unexpected. The hive was in a wall in the next building.” Maré says they had to ‘think on their feet’ after the bees had stung the learners and some of the employees. “We quickly separated the kids that had been stung from the kids who had not been stung and immediate attention was given to them. Emergency services responded quickly.” Many of the victims were discharged on the same day, two learners were kept overnight at the hospital while the employee who had been stung the most was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.” Maré adds that they were very fortunate that the situation was well under control. “We are glad that everyone is back at school. We can never underestimate the seriousness of the problem. If a person is allergic to bees, they can die.”

Goat rapist found guilty

VEREENIGING. - The Sharpeville goat rapist, Iyanga Phangayele, was found guilty on charges of animal cruelty in terms of the Animal Protection Act No 71 of 1962 and charges of bestiality in terms of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act No 32 of 2007 in the Vereeniging Regional Court. Phangayele was sentenced to six months suspended for three years. In June last year (2015) the SPCA Inspectorate investigated a case of bestiality involving a local resident having violent sexual intercourse with a female goat. The animal rapist was caught in the act by members of the community while raping and sexually assaulting the goat. The goat was still alive but later died as a result of the traumatic incident. Members of the community allegedly assaulted the animal rapist before contacting the Vereeniging & Vanderbijlpark SPCA and Sharpeville Police. The State and the Vereeniging & Vanderbijlpark SPCA strongly opposed Phangayele’s bail application. The SPCA celebrated when Magistrate Ferreira denied Phangayele bail on two occasions, resulting in the accused being kept in police custody for more than three months for his own safety. The Vereeniging & Vanderbijlpark SPCA spent a lot of time, funds and manpower on investigating this case and to ensure that justice is brought for this animal that

was brutally tortured and raped. “We serve and protect all animals. Vyf vriendinne van Vanderbijlpark is reeds die afgelope sewe jaar bedrywig met die maak van teddiebeertjies wat hulle aan liefdadigheidsorganisasies skenk. Die vyf dames (Iena Connoway, Lucille Aucamp, Annatjie Booysen, Ronnie Tamson en Hes Broekman) kom een maal per week bymekaar om saam te kuier en die teddiebere te maak. Hulle het die afgelope jaar weer prag-beertjies gemaak wat hulle aan die leerlinge van die June Nicholls Skool vir Serebraal Gestremdes geskenk het. Elk van die 27 leerlinge het ‘n unieke teddiebeertjie, asook ‘n lekker ‘tjoklit’ gekry. Die dames sê dat dit harde werk is, maar dat elke teddiebeer met liefde gemaak word. VANDERBIJLPARK. - Die June Nicholls Skool vir Serebraal Gestremdes is verlede week deur ‘n groep dames met flinke vingers en goue harte besoek. Die vriendinne (almal van Vanderbijlpark) het teddiebere gemaak wat hulle aan die 27 leerlinge van die skool geskenk het. Die kinders se ogies het geblink en die glimlagte was breed oor dié geskenke. Die June Nicholls Skool vir Serebraal Gestremdes bied reeds die afgelope 47 jaar ‘n veilige en liefdevolle omgewing waar die leerlinge voluit kan leef. Die skool is in 1969 deur mev. June Nicholls gestig en funksioneer steeds suksesvol in die Vaal. Dit is ‘n geregistreerde niewinsgewende organisasie en is gelisensieer deur die Departement van Gesondheid en geregistreer by die Departement van Onderwys as ‘n onafhanklike skool vir kinders met spesiale behoeftes. “Ons beskik oor Artikel 18A status wat donateurs toelaat om belastingkorting op hul bydraes aan die skool te eis,” verduidelik mev. Tilly van Schalkwyk, uitvoerende bestuurder van die skool.

Die skool is baie afhanklik van donateurs om te kan oorleef. Daar is tans 27 kinders wat die skool bywoon. Die kinders kom van regoor die Vaal tot sover as Orange Farm en hul ouderdomme wissel van 4 tot 26 jaar. Die kinders word volgens hul vaardigheidsvlak in drie klasse ingedeel. Hul daaglikse aktiwiteite word volgens ‘n vasgestelde program, wat aangepas is om in elke klas se behoeftes te voorsien, aangebied “Ons neem die kinders ten minste een maal per kwartaal op ‘n uitstappie na bv. die dieretuin by Emerald Resort & Casino, Kariba Ranch of die Ekopark. Ons sorg dat daar genoeg vermaak vir die leerlinge is,” sê Tilly. Hulle bied ook vermaak aan die kinders deur die gebruik van ‘n poppekas en hulle kry ook daagliks ligte, voedsame etes. “Ons neem jaarliks deel aan die Special Olympics wat deur Eureka Skool in Vereeniging gereël word en op die perseel van Pick n Pay in Bedworthpark aangebied word. Dit is ‘n hoogtepunt vir die leerlinge,” sê Tilly. Volgens haar is een van die redes waarom die skool so gewild is en hulle sukses met die leerlinge behaal, te danke aan die ongelooflike

bestuurspan wat deur hul toewyding die belange van die skool en van elke kind op die hart dra. “Ons ontvang daagliks wonderlike genade en seën van Bo, maar die ongereelde betaling van die subsidie en ook die swak ekonomiese toestand waaronder ons land gebuk gaan, veroorsaak dat ons werklik finansieel sukkel om die mas op te kom. “Ons grootste uitdaging tans is om die voedingskema in stand te hou en om ons lopende uitgawes soos veral brandstof vir die twee bussies waarmee die kinders van en na die skool vervoer word, te dek,” sê Tilly. Indien u enigsins in staat is om die skool op enige manier te ondersteun sodat hulle die diens aan die kinders kan volhou, sal dit hoog op prys gestel word. Minister visits old age home in sebokeng SEBOKENG. - Senior citizens and members of the Thandukwazi Old Age Home in Sebokeng hosted a special guest recently. Minister of Women in the Presidency, Susan Shabangu visited the Zone 14 home for elderly and brought gifts. The thanksgiving ceremony was held to thank the elderly for their role in their families and communities. Minister Shabangu was joined by Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Executive Mayor Mahole Mofokeng and speaker Maipato Tsokolibane in handing out donated blankets to the overjoyed elderly residents. The senior citizens packed a white tent erected in the yard of the old age home and were happy to receive their newly-donated blankets which had the words, “1956 Women’s March 60th Anniversary” printed on them. Several councillors and members of the Mayoral Committee from ELM also graced the event, including Busi Mncube for Corporate and Governance, Jan Moshoadiba for Human Settlements, Sylvia Sengoatsi for Health and Social Development, Dimakatso Malisa from Environmental Management and Planning and Nomvula Thulo for Basic Services. Speaking at the event, Minister Shabangu, who was on her way to the National Assembly in Cape Town, told the elderly

since the historic 1956 Women’s March.” Mayor Mofokeng said that some of the elderly residents who attended the event, are the very same people who raised him during his early days in politics. “Amongst these senior citizens are parents and grandparents who raised us to be the people we are today. I’m proud of them,” he said. Thanking the minister for the donation of

blankets, one of the senior citizens, Steven Mphane encouraged Minister Shabangu and Mayor Mofokeng to continue with their good work. “We thank God for your visit and we hope this is the beginning of bigger things to come,” he said. The Drakensberg Boys’ Choir in Vaal for Christmas concerts SASOLBURG. - One of South Africa’s national treasures, the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir, will be bringing the spirit of Christmas to Sasolburg when it passes through town on its national Noel Tour in December. Under the baton of Charlotte Botha, 55 boys from the choir, which is based in the Champagne Valley in the central Drakensberg, will perform on Thursday December 1 at the Etienne Rousseau Theatre. From Sasolburg, the choir will travel to Potchefstroom, Johannesburg and Klerksdorp before returning to school to finish the year of performing at the annual Christmas in the Berg Festival which is hosted at the Drakensberg Boys Choir School in the Central Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal. The choir tours three times a year, including overseas. This year the boys toured The Netherlands where they received a rousing welcome with all concerts sold out. Tickets for the concert are priced from R150 and are available on Computicket.

WHAT IS MEALS ON WHEELS? Meals on Wheels, a Non Profit Organisation, has supported the frail Elderly since 1964 with nutritious meals, nationwide. The Meals on Wheels Head office is in Bloemfontein, with area offices I each province. These area offices are staffed by local people and managed by committees which are held regularly. Annual General Meeting reports are sent to the department of Social Welfare with the relevant audited Financial Report.

THE VOLUNTEERS We have over 1 000 volunteers in South Africa making it possible to prepare almost 3 million meals per annum. The volunteers serves meals from 2-5 days/week throughout the country. These meals are prepared from equipped kitchens situated near areas of need. Certain Meals on wheels branches qualify for government subsidies,but the majority of branches depend heavily on the public for support.

OUR WHEELS Currently more than 190 vehicles are part of the success story,playing a major role in delivering food to the needy whereve they may be.

WHO DO WE SERVE? We have become more and more involved in feeding schemes,which involves more than the ederly,so in the past few years we have now become known as Meals on Wheels Community Services. Thousand of school children per annum,are now also benefiting from the feeding scheme.

OUR NEEDS With the number of needy, hungry people increasing so rapidly,there is high demand for volunteers,financial support and or donations in kind.Your help in any of these areas would be much appeciated as we remain commited to constantly making a difference in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s struggling communities.

Embedding Entrepreneurship within VUT

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) at the Vaal University of Technology has secured R645 000 worth of funding from the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP), a unit within Gauteng responsible for supporting small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) within the province. “We have been in negotiations with GEP since last year where we indicated the need for the government to be involved in making more people in the Vaal economically active via SMME training. They have decided to join our efforts,” said Dr Teboho Pitso, Senior Project Manager for Academic Development at VUT. “The purpose of the funding is to provide additional training to SMMEs that we have already trained in the Anglo/VUT Entrepreneurs Programme. These include companies run by students and staff. The additional training will be in the area of an Electronic Financial Management System for 60 companies. “We are also signing a Memorandum of Understanding with GEP to ensure the relationship is long-term as we have done with Anglo American and Murray and Roberts,” he said. CIE aims to provide support to key strategic objectives relating to embedding innovation and entrepreneurship across VUT as well as creating opportunities for third-stream income generation so that the university becomes more self-sufficient. “Rather than seeing VUT’s role as mainly focused on preparing students for employment, which is a narrow focus on the technical aspects of knowledge, we could also consider our role as contributing towards building a functioning democratic society with a broader economic redistribution model leading to less poverty, less inequality, less unemployment (the practical aspects of knowledge),” said Dr Pitso. “Without students that demonstrate graduate attributes such as creative problem-solv-
