Advertising The Houston Symphony is a non-profit organization that relies on the support of our generous donors. Presenting nearly

170 concerts annually with an ensemble of 88 full-time professional musicians, the Symphony is Houston’s largest performing arts organization. We enrich the lives of hundreds of thousands through more than 1,000 annual community-based performances and inspiring classroom visits. Your support enables us to continue creating innovative and commanding musical experiences. The activities and projects of the Houston Symphony are funded in part by grants from the City of Houston, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Texas Commission on the Arts. The Houston Symphony currently records under its own label, Houston Symphony Media Productions, and for Pentatone and Naxos. Houston Symphony recordings are also available on the Telarc, RCA Red Seal, Virgin Classics, and Koch International Classics labels. Cameras, Recorders, Cell Phones & Pagers

Cameras and recorders are not permitted in the hall. Patrons may not use any device to record or photograph performances. At the Houston Symphony, we live to share music with you, music that you make possible. Two-thirds of the Houston Symphony’s annual operating budget is funded by donations from music lovers like you, and as our city fights COVID-19, your support is more essential than ever. Make a gift today to ensure that the Houston Symphony continues to thrive as we work together to beat this challenge. With your help, the Houston Symphony will be ready to bring world-class orchestral concerts back to Houston in the weeks ahead. We may not be able to give concerts this month, but we are still excited to share great music with you until we return to Jones Hall. Learn how you can continue to connect with the Houston Symphony on page 14. In this issue of InTune, we are also excited to celebrate two treasured musicians—Principal Viola Wayne Brooks and Double Bass and Assistant Librarian Michael McMurray—who both retire at the end of this season. They are not only incredible artists, but also great people. Colleagues share memories of them on pages 20–23. In May, we plan to return to Jones Hall to finish our 2019–20 Season with two concerts of heroic music that celebrates the resilience of Houstonians in the face of adversity: our Classical Series concludes with stirring music by Beethoven, and our POPS Series ends with The Best of John Williams— “Star Wars” & More with Chorus! Until then, from all of us at the Houston Symphony, stay safe, and we hope to see you again soon.

OROZCO-ESTRADA MUSIC DIRECTOR

ROY AND LILLIE CULLEN CHAIR Energy, elegance, and spirit—these are the qualities that distinguish Andrés Orozco-Estrada as a musician. Since the 2014–15 season, he has been music director of the Houston Symphony and principal conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Beginning in the 2020–21 season, he will be chief conductor of the Vienna Symphony. Andrés conducts many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Orchestre National de France, and American orchestras in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Chicago. He has also directed successful concerts and opera performances at the Glyndebourne and Salzburg festivals. Highlights of the 2019–20 season include performances with the Vienna Philharmonic at the BBC Proms and the Lucerne Festival, as well as tours to China, South Korea, and Japan. In the spring, Andrés conducts his debut concert with the New York Philharmonic and returns as a guest to the rostrum of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. In May 2020, the Dutch National Opera Amsterdam premieres a new production of Carmen under his direction. With the Houston Symphony, he recently presented a new two-week Schumann Festival featuring the composer’s symphonies, concertos, choral works, and chamber music. He conducts three concerts at the Wiener Musikverein, leading the Vienna Symphony as principal conductor designate. Andrés is particularly committed to new concert formats in which spoken commentary and visual elements complement the music as he rediscovers known repertoire together with the audience—be it a Spotlight concert with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra or a Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra family concert. His CD releases at Pentatone have attracted critical praise. His Dvořák cycle with the Houston Symphony was praised by Pizzicato as a “vital Dvořák with warm colors.” With the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, recordings of Stravinsky's Firebird and The Rite of Spring were hailed as “beguiling” by Gramophone, and the same publication recently described him as “a fine Straussian” in a review of their recent recording of the Alpine Symphony from his Richard Strauss cycle. In addition, his interpretations of all the Brahms and Mendelssohn symphonies are available on recordings. Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés began his musical education with the violin. He received his first conducting lessons at 15 and began study in Vienna in 1997, where he was accepted at the prestigious University of Music and Performing Arts in the conducting class of Uroš Lajovic, a student of the legendary Hans Swarowsky. Andrés has since lived in Vienna. 4 | Houston Symphony

HOUSTON SYMPHONY relief fund We at the Houston Symphony are thinking of you and hope you’re well. In the Houston Symphony’s 107-year history, we have not faced a challenge like this. We have made it through stock market declines, oil price collapses, and natural disasters. But never have we faced all three simultaneously. Times like these bring out the best in Houstonians. Like so many of our neighbors, the Symphony’s 164 orchestra and staff members are working from home, finding innovative ways to be the organization you cherish—which you have helped to create with your support. Your orchestra musicians are making videos in their homes to share music with you. We have also delved into our music archives for thrilling past performances to share, so you can keep your Symphony’s music in your life. Now more than ever we need your help to keep the music alive. You have been so generous, and we are grateful for your past support. We have established a relief fund to help mitigate between $6 and 7 million in lost revenue caused by this crisis. The Symphony staff and orchestra members are doing their part, accepting a temporary pay cut effective immediately, and 12 | Houston Symphony

we are asking every Houston Symphony Society member to consider making a special gift, over and above your annual membership. Please help protect the Symphony during this temporary closure. To support the relief fund and protect the Houston Symphony during this temporary closure, please visit houstonsymphony.org/relieffund or contact Christine Ann Stevens, Director, Individual Giving at christine.stevens@houstonsymphony.org or 713.337.8531. Symphony members like you, passionate about music and the cultural service your Symphony provides to the Houston community, make all the difference. You have, for more than a century, grown one of the finest orchestras in the world and created the cornerstone of your city’s arts and culture community. We look forward to the day when, having weathered the current crisis alongside the resilient Houston community we serve, our orchestra emerges stronger than before to perform again for you, and for all of Houston.

VIDEO GAMES & ORCHESTRA COLLIDE On May 21, the Houston Symphony presents Game ON!, a fresh, new concert featuring scores from blockbuster video games performed by a live orchestra together with stunning video. Conductor and composer Andy Brick shares how he created this one-of-a-kind concert experience. People tend to think of video game music as similar to film music, but I disagree. Films are passive and linear. The audience observes a story that has clear beginning, middle, and end. Games, on the other hand, are interactive and not always linear. The audience is often a part of the story and determines game play. There is an active, often physical interaction in video games. I think that interaction is part of the reason why people feel such a strong connection with music from their favorite games. I spend a lot of time both creating and listening to video game soundtracks, and each score in Game ON! is carefully curated. Without a doubt, historically iconic games like World of Warcraft and Guild Wars 2 are part of the program since they have such a wide appeal to a diverse audience. Similarly, we want to treat the audience to current blockbusters with sweeping music from titles like Destiny 2 and The Witcher 3. In addition to RPGs and current blockbusters, the very best e-sports, platformers, and action games such as League of Legends, Rayman Legends, Ori, and Assassin’s Creed are part of the program. There are also a few games that appeal to a more specialized group that I felt had really special music and video. For example, Until Dawn, a horror title, requires the orchestra musicians to play their instruments in all sorts of strange ways. It’s really wild to watch the musicians play the piece, and it sounds really cool...especially when you hear it with the video! 18 | Houston Symphony

GAME ON: VIDEO GAMES & ORCHESTRA COLLIDE

It was important to me that the Game ON! program would completely captivate not only the audience but also the orchestra. I worked closely with game developers to make sure their games are featured with stunning symphonic arrangements and video. When I was developing the League of Legends music with Riot Games, for instance, I lobbied hard to include Lulu and Shaco’s Quirky Encounter, one of the most loved pieces in the League franchise. It has an amazingly musical and technically challenging violin solo, and before Game ON! premiered with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, that piece had never been performed live. As a conductor, I love giving those moments to the musicians. The influences of video game composers reach deep into the history of the orchestral repertoire. Without a doubt, I hear the influence of the 20th-century composer Krzysztof Penderecki in the music from Until Dawn. I also hear Webern and the early avant-garde orchestra repertoire in BioShock, and that wonderful violin solo in League of Legends is something I think Tchaikovsky would have appreciated! In fact, one incredibly stunning piece in Game ON! is the Elizabeth Peace music from the Civilization franchise. This piece is an arrangement of Jupiter, part of the orchestral suite The Planets by the English composer Gustav Holst. Originally written in 1914, the piece is now part of the standard repertoire of classical orchestras. New Game ON! fans often tell me they never knew how powerful and evocative a live orchestra could be. A polished mix of the horns in your favorite game soundtrack is wonderful, but a live horn section in a concert hall packed with fans who love that music is epic. There is something about this young, energetic audience that brings the musicians to a very special place. During rehearsals with the Oregon Symphony, we came to a piece called Journey from Destiny 2. The music evolves and culminates with the entire orchestra and choir playing a wonderful, pastoral melody. When the orchestra and choir got there, it was like the heavens had opened. We finished the rehearsal of Destiny 2, and I literally sat there speechless. I didn't think it could get any better, but that night the musicians outdid themselves, and the packed house went nuts. It was really special to have that young audience cheering and applauding for its home orchestra! —Andy Brick Don’t miss Game ON! on May 21! Houstonsymphony.org/GameON.

CELEBRATING

WAYNE

BROOKS PRINCIPAL VIOLA

Next month, the Houston Symphony bids farewell to treasured Principal Viola Wayne Brooks as he retires from the orchestra. Don’t miss his final Classical Series performance at Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy. Music has been my gateway to everything: loved ones, incredible colleagues, and the full spectrum of human emotions. It has been everything I do in life ever since I was a young boy. I have been so lucky to have had the powerful and meaningful opportunities afforded to me through music. I joined the Houston Symphony in March 1977. I am not a fan of cold weather, so I immediately loved it here. Even back in the stone ages when I auditioned, the process was similar to how it is now: a preliminary, semi-final, and final round. I worked very hard for this audition, and I felt like it went well. When I won the job, I was elated and honored, and at the same time horrified at how little experience I had and how much repertoire I needed to learn! Playing for five very different and unique music directors, all of whom I have learned from, has helped to shape me musically. Having the good fortune to go on so many tours to different places over the years has also been musically rewarding. As principal, my approach to leading the violas has been that we are all equals, and we lead together as a unit. I consider it our section and not my section. I have incredible respect for everyone in it, and I am also incredibly proud, as we all are, of how strong and unified we are. Although I am leaving the orchestra, I am not thinking in terms of being retired. I am on the faculty of the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, and during the summers, I teach at the Texas Music Festival. I enjoy working with students, and I constantly learn from them. I live in a 128-year-old house on Galveston Island and love historic architecture, so I plan on becoming more involved with the Galveston Historical Foundation. Also, I have a strong love of animals and would like to become more involved with animal welfare and support. —Wayne Brooks, principal viola 20 | Houston Symphony

My first day with the Houston Symphony was a rehearsal of Elgar’s Enigma Variations, a piece containing two prominent viola solos. From the first moment he played, Wayne’s expressive and commanding tone sang out, rich with character. I knew how lucky I was to be a member of his section. Wayne is the kind of committed leader you dream to work with. He shows the highest musical and personal values, leads quietly by example, and expects more from himself than anyone else around him. When he plays a solo, I am always awestruck. The soulfulness and presence of his playing is unlike that of any other musician I have known. Thank you, Wayne, we adore you! Your gorgeous tone will be ringing out into the hall long after you retire. —Joan DerHovsepian, associate principal viola

The first time I heard Wayne perform was in 2001–02 season. I was a student at Rice University and came to Jones Hall for the first time to hear him perform Harold in Italy. I had tickets in the very last row. When Wayne entered after the long orchestral tutti, he had the most beautiful viola sound I had ever heard. It made a real impact upon me as a young person, and I consider myself fortunate and honored that I had the opportunity to work with Wayne 10 years later when I joined the Houston Symphony. —Sheldon Person, viola

WAYNE BROOKS AND FAY SHAPIRO 1982

Wayne is not only a beautiful musician and violist, but he is also humble and supportive of all of us in the viola section. This type of leader is priceless! —Linda Goldstein, viola

It has been an honor and a pleasure to have Wayne Brooks as our principal violist. I joined the viola section of the Houston Symphony 28 years ago, and from day one he’s been kind and welcoming. Wayne is flawless in his solos and concerto appearances. His beautiful sound, perfect intonation, brilliant technique, and exciting musicality never fail to shine through. The viola section has flourished under Wayne’s quiet and stable leadership. He will be sorely missed! I wish him a happy retirement after more than four decades of stellar service to the Houston Symphony! —Daniel Strba

I've been here in the section with Wayne now for nearly 39 years, and it's been wonderful to share the stage with him. He's been a wonderful leader as associate principal and principal and a wonderful friend. He has a great sense of humor that usually involves poking fun at himself. For all of us, I really can't imagine what it will be like here without him. We'll miss him terribly, but we know that he has a great and fulfilling time ahead of him. —Fay Shapiro

MCMURR AY

DOUBLE BASS / ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN Next month, the Houston Symphony bids farewell to beloved Double Bass and Assistant Librarian Michael McMurray as he retires from the orchestra. Don’t miss his final Classical Series performance at Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy. To me, music is life. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have a tune in my head. I grew up loving to sing, and my instrumental experiment with the double bass eventually led me to get into the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra at age 14. As we were rehearsing Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 at my first summer camp—the first time I had ever played in a real orchestra—I remember thinking, “This is what I want to do! I have to be around this music!” I came to Houston in October 1979 after playing in the New Orleans Philharmonic for three years; and in 1981, I was also given the position of assistant music librarian. A music librarian’s job in a major orchestra is a challenge. The score and parts to a particular piece of music are the composer’s map to making the music on the page come alive, and the main focus of a librarian is to put parts on the stands at the first rehearsal that are as readable and mistake-free as possible. That way we can spend rehearsal working on making music rather than worrying about the physical materials. I enjoy the work because of this challenge, and I want to get the job done right, whatever it takes. A satisfying day for me is when the conductor and players can say, following a rehearsal, there were no problems with the music. I enjoy other kinds of music, but for me there’s nothing like being in the middle of the orchestra, when, for example, we’re playing the opening of Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloé, Suite No. 2, and the woodwinds are weaving their tapestry of magic undercurrents to the main theme. The thrill of those moments and the emotions they stir highlight what life is all about. I’m going to miss that. My wife, Debbie, and I are building a house in the hill country near Burnet, Texas, and we will be moving there after I retire. Our son, James, and his family live in Round Rock, so we’ll be closer to them. Our other son, Doug, and his family live here in Houston, which means we’ll be coming back to visit often.—Michael McMurray

Mike McMurray’s kindness and supreme musical gifts have been fixtures of the Houston Symphony for decades. I will deeply miss his connection to storied pedagogues and players that drove the history of American bass playing. Ever since my first week at Jones Hall, I have been inspired by Mike’s attention to detail in both music and his relationships with all of us. —Robin Kesselman, principal double bass 22 | Houston Symphony

PERFORMING IN BERLIN, GERMANY DURING THE 2018 EUROPEAN TOUR

I sat with Mike the very first time I played with the symphony, and I’ve always been so thankful for his calming, inviting, and reassuring presence. We’ve shared some great laughs and stories of our families, Mike’s early days in the Symphony, and vintage television and film (especially Star Wars). Not necessarily a “first impression,” but Mike sits very tall, his stool is taller than most people! Joking aside, spotting his stool and hoping it’s next to mine is something I will greatly miss. Thank you, Mike, for all the wonderful things you have done for the Symphony, whether it be through the library or on stage. It has been quite the privilege to spend three seasons with you, and I’m so lucky our paths crossed. —Andrew Pedersen, double bass

Mike is a great librarian, a great musician, and a great person. I couldn’t have asked for a better assistant. —Tom Takaro, librarian

Mike and I have played together in the bass section for more than 35 years. He always impressed me with his easy manner, natural artistry, and wonderful sense of humor. I join my colleagues in wishing him a wonderful retirement.—Mark Shapiro, double bass

HEADSHOT • 1980 When I was first introduced to Mike, I distinctly recall his welcoming spirit, which made me feel instantly part of the librarian family. With his tenure stretching nearly four decades, he was never short of fantastic stories which I will miss. Mike’s passion, professional skill, work ethic, and institutional knowledge have made him an integral member of the library. The legacy he leaves will be ever-present in the numerous materials he painstakingly engraved and in each part marked with his distinctive, double-M signature.—Aspen McArthur, assistant librarian

WHAT’S IN MY CASE? WITH JEFFREY BUTLER 1. CELLO made in 2013 by Oregon-based luthier Mark Moreland, patterned after Pablo Casals’s Goffriller cello. “I never imagined I would love a modern cello!” 2. BOWS “Every bow has as much personality as an instrument does.” 3. FIDELIS STRING QUARTET CD Jeff’s quartet released the album in 2019 as a tribute to their late friend Danny Granados, a clarinetist and former Houston Symphony CFO. 4. ROSIN creates sound through friction between the bow and the strings. 5. PENCILS for marking scores. 6. 2018 EUROPEAN TOUR PROGRAM with Hilary Hahn on the cover. “She’s coming back next season, which makes everyone happy.” 7. SPRING CONCERT PROGRAM from a Kinder HSPVA concert featuring Jeff’s oldest daughter, Katie, who plays violin. 8. BACKSTAGE PASSES from the 2019 Andrea Bocelli concert at the Toyota Center and a concert in Colombia with Hilary Hahn. 9. BOX OF CHOCOLATES from a fundraiser for his son William’s middle school band. 10. TRAVEL TRUNK used to move instruments from Jones Hall, as well as for storage backstage. 11. EXTRA SET OF TAILS “It’s always good to have backups!” 12. STICKERS commemorating tours with the Symphony to Japan, England, Boston, and Carnegie Hall, as well as outside gigs with Lyle Lovett and Luciano Pavarotti. 13. CASE used for everyday transportation. “If I fly by myself with my cello, then I have to buy a seat for it.” 34 | Houston Symphony
