The Magic of Holden As the sun set on May 18, 2013, crowds gathered at Rhodies After Dark to celebrate the opening of the Eliot and Linda Paine Rhododendron Discovery Garden and the R. Henry Norweb Jr. Tree Allée to watch fireworks light up the sky over Corning Lake. It was a magical moment, and yet it was just one of the highlights of a year filled with accomplishments that showed the power The Holden Arboretum has to captivate visitors and transform the world.

Turning Over A New Leaf The new Paine Rhododendron Garden and Norweb Tree Allée were just two projects outlined in phase one of Holden’s New Leaf Core Area Master Plan. Still to come are the restoration of Corning Lake, the construction of the Tree Canopy Walk and the installation of deer fencing to protect Holden’s core gardens and collections. While Holden’s endowment remains strong, tackling these new projects requires external support. To garner that support, Holden’s development team spent 2013 working tirelessly behind the scenes to secure the remaining funds for Holden’s first public capital campaign. The campaign, targeted at raising $7.85 million for improvements to the gardens, infrastructure and Corning Lake, was set to move into its public phase at the end of the fiscal year. The fundraising efforts, led by Campaign Chair Paul R. Abbey and supported by many volunteers and staff, included meeting Holden’s first matching gift challenge from the Kent H. Smith Charitable Trust. To earn the $1 million in matching funds, Holden had a year to raise $2 million, a goal it reached in December 2012. Throughout the fiscal year, the staff development team led by Stephen Sedam continued to reach out to Holden’s friends and supporters, many of whom had not given in many years but were moved to support the New Leaf Campaign or who opted to increase their given substantially to support Holden’s efforts, said James Pelowski, who succeeded Mr. Sedam in April. Like many things in nature, the seeds you plant can often grow beyond your expectations. In September, with the fiscal year drawing to a close and the public phase of the New Leaf Campaign ready to begin, Holden was close to its $7.85 million goal.

4

At that point, Judy Murch and her son, Maynard Murch, pledged $1 million for the construction of the canopy walk, and an additional $500,000 to create an endowment to provide about $25,000 a year for its maintenance. The gift allowed the arboretum to meet its original goal before the public phase began. With three months remaining in the campaign, Holden’s Board of Directors decided to increase the goal to $8.5 million, providing additional opportunities for Holden’s friends to engage in the organization’s first public capital campaign.

“The fact that we were able to increase our target for campaign fundraising and then exceed that increased target by $500,000 was nothing short of phenomenal. The generous response of many donors to our completion of the Norweb Tree Allée and the Paine Rhododendron Discovery Garden illustrated how eager people were to see our plans turn into reality,” said Clem Hamilton, Holden’s president and CEO. The success of the New Leaf campaign lays the foundation for future expansion at Holden. The projects it supports are just the first phase of planned improvements for the arboretum, which also include home demonstration gardens, improvements to the paths and trails, an addition to the Horticultural Science Center, a larger children’s nature play area, additional tree displays and a new visitor center. It also creates a foundation for future fundraising that will be key as Holden moves forward with those projects. “We now have a track record, not only with individuals but with foundations and corporations that we can build on for future fundraising,” Pelowski said. While Holden’s development team has been focused on raising funds for the New Leaf Campaign and the ongoing operation of the arboretum, Holden’s research department garnered funding to help them create a new generation of scientists trained to increase our knowledge of the natural world Holden is dedicated to protecting.

The REU is the second NSF grant Holden has received. In 2009, Holden scientists David Burke and Kurt Smemo, along with Ohio University’s Jared DeForest, received a $519,300 NSF grant examining the important role soil organisms play in obtaining nutrients from the soil for forest trees, including the effects of acid rain on

While the REU program was launched in 2013, Holden already has a long tradition of working with undergraduate and graduate students. In 2013, the department hosted six undergraduate students for summer experiences, including three through other funding from the National Science Foundation. Two graduate students from Case Western Reserve University also conducted research during the summer and academic year at Holden’s Horticultural Science Center.

NSF demonstrates the caliber of the program Holden is building. “The NSF is one of the world’s premier research-funding organizations,” Burke said. “Funding from the NSF is very difficult to get – funding rates are very low, with only anywhere from 3 to 5 percent of proposals receiving funding. An NSF grant is indicative of a nationally recognized research program.” Holden science program gives the arboretum some distinction and places it in the upper echelons of arboretums, Burke said, and extends Holden’s impact far beyond our own region.

RESEARCH INTERNS WERE FUNDED BY TWO GRANTS FROM THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION, INCLUDING A RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATES GRANT AWARDED TO HOLDEN AND KENT STATE UNIVERSITY.

A Magical Transformation While much of the work of Holden’s fundraisers and scientists takes place behind the scenes, the work of Holden’s horticulturists, educators and guest relations staff takes more conspicuous center stage. More than 91,236 people visited Holden in 2013, the second highest visitation record on record, and up from the 87,946 guests who came through the gates in 2012. Those visitors ranged from guests who came to enjoy the beauty of the gardens and natural areas to school children who explored forest ecology as part of Holden’s Growing Students in Science program. It represents people who expanded their knowledge at Scientist Lecture Series and those who stretched their bodies during Yoga in the Garden. During the year, those visitors saw a number of improvements take shape to improve their experience at Holden. The largest was the completion of the Paine Rhododendron Discovery Garden and the Norweb Tree Allée, both of which opened in May. More than 1,300 people joined us for the opening day celebration, with another 240 attending the special Rhodies After Dark celebration in the garden, which cumulated with fireworks over Corning Lake. The first new garden to open at Holden since the completion of the Arlene and Arthur S. Holden Jr. Butterfly Garden in 2002, the 4.5 acre Paine Rhododendron Discovery Garden is designed to help visitors develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of rhododendrons. Strolling through the garden, guests can find out more about rhododendrons and their relatives, including blueberries and mountain laurels; discover Northeast Ohio’s rich tradition as a center for rhododendron hybridization; and learn more about how they can successfully incorporate these beautiful plants into their home landscapes. While the garden is designed to teach, it was also created as a beautiful setting for guests to enjoy

converted into classroom space for both the Growing Students in Science program, as well as adult workshops.

Visitors to Holden found the new garden and tree allée, as well as other Holden landmarks, easier to find this year, thanks to improvements to Holden wayfinding signs in the areas surrounding the Warren H. Corning Visitor Center. These new signs are just the first step in continued improvements aimed at making it easier for guests to find their way on the grounds.

Renovating the building was the first step in transforming the former sugarbush east of Sperry Road into the Working Woods, which will someday help demonstrate how small wooded properties can be utilized by their owners. The 30 acre site will be used for a variety of demonstration plots allowing landowners to see the proper techniques for managing their property to increase the diversity of trees, attract wildlife, build walking trails or grow woodland crops such as mushrooms and ginseng.

Holden continued its mission to engage and educate children, reaching more than 12,680 students in area schools through the Growing Students in Science Program, which were held this year in the newly renovated buildings at Holden’s Working Woods. The building, once used for maple syrup production, has been

to making it more user friendly and inviting to guests. The work included new carpeting and furnishings, as well as wi-fi access for guests. While improvements made during the fiscal year have reshaped the arboretum in a variety of ways, they have all had one goal, to enhance the visitor experience and help move Holden forward as an institution dedicated to a Northeast Ohio in which trees, forests and gardens provide maximum ecological and social benefits to the region’s people and communities. “While the new construction and signage, as well as the improvements to existing programs, natural areas and gardens are the result of the efforts of Holden’s leadership and staff,” Hamilton said, “it would not have been possible without the support of the arboretum’s longtime friends and donors.”

Albert Fairchild Holden Society The Albert Fairchild Holden Society was established in 1998 to recognize those individuals whose generosity and foresight supports The Holden Arboretum with either a planned gift (will, trust, insurance, life income arrangement such as an annuity, etc.) or conservation easement. This year we recognize all individuals, those living and deceased, whose philanthropy places them in this distinguished group of donors. Gifts from Members of the Albert Fairchild Holden Society live on in perpetuity and help to ensure the ongoing financial strength and programmatic vitality of Holden. Should you know of anyone whom we have inadvertently missed, please contact Alicia Soss at 440.602.3848 or asoss@holdenarb.org.
