FROM THE EDITOR SOME families, I’m told, sit around the dinner table talking politics. We’re not one of those. I mean why talk about that when you can interrogate mum and dad as to why dinner isn’t pasta. Sometimes that lack of serious conversation shines badly on the parents, other times, the nation. Case in point a conversation with my eldest last week, who has just turned 18 and excitedly told us she had enrolled to vote. “That’s great,” I said, “so who are the candidates in your electorate?”. “In my what?” she asked, with genuine curiosity. “Your electorate?” “My electric? Is that like, if you’re left wing or right wing?” Oh ... dear. She said her flatmates thought she was pretty funny as well.

ADMIN & ACCOUNTS BETH CHENEY accounts@gcnews.com.au

Playing cute is so cool. Regardless, I duly explained the role of government and elected representatives and why she might want to take a passing interest. With that in mind, for this edition we’ve asked each candidate in the seat of Fisher to tell us why they want to be in politics and one big issue they want to address in the region. We hope this helps you make an informed decision come polling day.

Peachester Park takes shape

news

By Jennifer Kent

Childcare Centre proposed for Landsborough

IN what has been a process drawn out over decades, the plight for Peachester residents and visitors to enjoy their very own park is one that has proven the power of passionate, community-minded people can achieve real results. Council has developed a concept plan on the future of the space on the corner of Peachester Road and High Street and community members are encouraged to complete an online survey by Friday, April 29, on how they would like the park to further be developed. Community group Park for Peachester, who spearheaded the campaign for the park over recent years, are encouraging people to complete the survey and share their thoughts on what they’d like to see at Peachester Park. The group’s spokesperson, Melissa Driscoll, explained that while the group have always worked in close consultation with the community every step of the way, the survey is a chance for community members to give their feedback directly to the council. “We would like as many people as possible to have their say and submit the survey so council can hear directly from them and see that they agree with what we’re driving,” she said. “It’s not just a select few people wanting this, it’s the whole community. And this is the chance for council to see that.” Melissa is encouraging kids to give their feedback too. “There are vines to swing on, a gully to explore, and so much more. It’s nature’s play equipment,” she said.

A CONTROVERSIAL vacant 4,000sqm site in Landsborough could soon be a two-story childcare centre following a new development application. The application with Sunshine Coast Regional Council proposes splitting a large site at 37 Maleny Street into a childcare centre with 112-place capacity and two smaller residential blocks for future development. The site has had multiple proposals prior to this one including a unit block and accommodation units in 2018, which was ultimately scuppered by community resistance. Designers of the latest proposal, Infinitum Partners, say the two-story centre, which will also have capacity for 18 staff and 15 visitor car parks, does not negatively impact the residential character of the area. “The proposed child care centre is located at the entrance to a residential neighbourhood and in close proximity to other community uses, and has been designed in such a way that it acknowledges the character of Landsborough,” site designer Infinitum Partners states in the DA. The designer states the site is suitable to the established catchment, well located on a major road network and “can be delivered in such a way that does not create any impact on residential character and amenity”. The site is 300m from Peace Park, 400m from Landsborough Primary School, 600m from the local shops and 700m from Landsborough Station.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

“As it is, the park is a wonderful natural playground which the kids just love and they’d be devastated to see those aspects of the park taken away.” While the park offers kids endless opportunity to enjoy different types of nature play, there is still room for improvement. “We’re seeking basic infrastructure and we’re hoping to be included in this year’s budget,” she said. “We’ve been left out for a long time.” Have your say by completing the survey by 5pm Friday, April 29 at haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov. au/peachester-park-concept-plan Keep updated with what’s happening by following ‘A Park for Peachester’ on Facebook.

Legacy of Maleny WW1 Digger honoured By Sonia Isaacs Clark NEARLY 105 years after his untimely death at the battle of Passchendaele, the legacy of Maleny WW1 Digger, Private (Pte) Tom Lillingstone, 41st Battalion AIF has been further remembered with the inclusion of his name on the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital WW1 honour roll. Ahead of Anzac Day, his niece and family historian Jill Lillingstone travelled from Melbourne to meet with hospital Director of Nursing Karen Croker to see the last remaining gold plaque on the honour board inscribed with her uncle’s name. Jill said that while her uncle’s name had previously appeared on the WW1 honour board in the Maleny RSL hall, as well as on a plaque located along the ‘Walk of Remembrance’ next to the hospital, it had been accidentally overlooked on the WW1 honour board which had been moved over from the old hospital site. Jill said as Tom had only been married for a few days before leaving for war, he had no children, and with no living nephews or nieces apart from herself, she was dedicated to continuing to preserve his memory and the legacy of other diggers for future generations.

Director of Nursing at the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital Karen Croker with Jill Lillingstone “Tom was a carpenter and dairyman who left Maleny in 1916, joining the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) to serve as a medic in WW1,” said Jill. “I am very grateful and pleased to have his name included on the honour roll today as further recognition that the sacrifice of these men has been valued and not forgotten.” Director of Nursing at the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Karen Croker, said she was very pleased that Tom’s name had been finally included. “It’s nice to see the hospital’s honour board now complete with the names of everyone who should be on it,” said Karen.

Thousands show their support for live music in Maleny By Mitch Gaynor and Sonia Isaacs Clark THERE has been an incredible groundswell of community support as the future of live music nights at Maleny Lane have been called into question, after the Sunshine Coast Regional Council issued a letter of demand to local organisers. Hundreds of people gathered in support outside the venue on Easter Monday and thousands have signed an online change.org petition prompted after the Council directed organisers of Maleny Lane and the Front Up Chalkboard Club to effectively cease live music at the outdoor venue by May 6.

Hundreds of community members turned up to ‘help save live music in Maleny’

One of the key organisers, Steve McLeish, said while he was astounded by the community support, he was keen to negotiate a win-win solution with the Council to keep the arts and community enhancing cultural projects alive in Maleny. While he acknowledged that there had previously been a few residential noise complaints mitigated with installation of a soundproof wall, it appeared the popular live Monday and Friday music nights had recently come under fire again prompting a written directive from the Council’s Planning Department. One of the concerns is family friendly music events may have expanded beyond their outdoor venues licence due to not fitting into the ‘correct box’ of the current planning scheme. Mr McLeish told GC&M News that the directive gave organisers three choices: to either stop music altogether, take it somewhere else, or put in a development application for a change of use which meant seeking a nightclub licence which he said was not what the music nights were about. “During the conversation we had with the Planning Department they refused to meet with us and said that the only real option we have is for the music to be closed down. I’ve had well over 200 letters of support and two barristers have offered to donate their time, so we have some really quite skilled people that are helping us with this issue,” said Mr McLeish.

Nature corridor saved after Maleny protest Mr McLeish is now working with a solicitor to draft an interim response seeking an extension to the May 6 action date, and is keen to seek a medium to long term solution. “What it’s about is more broadly arts in regional communities and keeping the arts alive, the whole of Maleny Lane has been community-driven. The council has had forums about how they’re fully supporting the arts, but they haven’t paid a cent, they haven’t contributed anything,” said Mr McLeish. “I’m hoping this will be a catalyst for positive change,” said Mr McLeish. “We would love to see Council support us and help establish an Arts Precinct here.” Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston said he was aware of the issue. “I’ve met with the principals and other interested parties and made representations to councils Town Planning compliance department, and we are working through the issue,” he said. The Maleny Chamber of Commerce has expressed its dismay at the potential closure, saying the Front Up Club embodied the town’s creative expression. Chamber president Spencer Shaw said the limited number of appropriate venues only served to highlight the importance of the Front Up Club.

“The Front Up Club is indicative and crucial in presenting the musical creativity of Maleny and should be supported in every reasonable way by Sunshine Coast Council, in what would be seen as an actual, genuine, expression of support to community, culture, arts and economic development,” he said. “Maleny Commerce strongly supports this creative venture and urges SCC rapidly reconsider the ‘shutdown’ of live music in Maleny, and believes this would be damaging to our community, culture and economy.” Greens Spokesperson Andrew McLean told GC&M News if the council forced the venue to close it would “crush the soul of the town”. A spokesperson for Sunshine Coast Regional Council said it had received several complaints from local residents about the noise from Maleny Lane music events in Maleny. “Council is currently investigating the lawfulness of these events and will work with the landowner/ operator to achieve compliance. Council conducts such investigations in a manner that is objective, fair and impartial, in accordance with the law, and respectful of individuals,” a spokesperson said.

PEOPLE power has saved a local habitat corridor from being destroyed after a developer was forced to scrap plans for multiple driveways on its site. The proposed development at 11 Palm Street, Maleny, was set to see 33 lots created with a block size of 800m2 to 1500m2. But local residents were angered by the inclusion of a number of driveways that would have forced the removal of a 200 metre long nature reserve. Residents created a petition, held protests and lobbied Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston on their behalf and were last week advised of the amended plans. “The local community would like to acknowledge the time and effort by Councillor Winston Johnston and the Sunshine Coast Council Planning Department to listen and engage with residents regarding their concerns of this development,” lead resident petitioner Clive Waring wrote in a letter to Sunshine Coast Councillor planner Kristy Lamb. But Mr Waring said there were still some concerns including the nature corridor could still be harmed by bulldozing required for a new service road. “What precautions can be required of the developers so they do not inadvertently destroy the nature habitat we are trying to protect?” Mr Waring asked in the letter. He said residents were concerned that one driveway in particular was proposed for the brow of a hill and was a “fatal accident waiting to happen”.

The rainbow bus named Skittles SES donation a life saver Maleny Accident Repair Centre’s apprentices Ethan Francis and Gwilyn Black with The River School Principal Ann Donoghoe IMAGINE riding around in a rainbow coloured bus called ‘Skittles’. Students of Maleny’s The River School can imagine no more with their bus having undergone a very colourful makeover thanks to the generosity of Maleny Accident Repair Centre (MARC). The River School principal Ann Donoghoe expressed her gratitude for the “awesome work done on the ‘Skittles’ bus”, sharing they did an outstanding job. The design was created by MARC’s owner Juan Perez and his sons Diego and Mateo. Diego shared he “wanted the bus to look like it had just gone through a wet painted rainbow”, with Mateo adding that he wanted the front to look like it had “been shot with colour pellets”. The end result: a fabulous looking bus the kids really love. Juan, along with his apprentices Ethan Francis and Gwilyn Black, took on the mighty task of repairing, designing and painting the bus prior to Easter all free of charge. With over 200 hours work on ‘Skittles’, Juan shared they were honoured to showcase how far their apprentices have come, giving their time and craftsmanship back to the community. “We hope you enjoy watching the Skittles bus drive up and down town and it brings a smile to everyone that sees it,” Juan said.

WHAT started as a simple conversation has ended in a $1,000 donation from Glasshouse Property Sales principal Kelvin Brady to the Glasshouse Mountains SES. When deep in conversation about the tight SES budget with Glasshouse SES member and new Glasshouse Property Sales salesman Damien McDonald, Kelvin said it was clear that a donation would go a long way. Kelvin regularly donates to local community groups and said it was important for those like the Glasshouse SES to have quality equipment. “Everyone at the Glasshouse SES is great at what they do,” he said. “They’re all volunteers who do a fantastic job and they don’t get paid anything to do it.” According to Damien, this money will certainly help. He said new ladders, a battery chainsaw and sandbag fillers were all at the top of the SES shopping list. “The funding is tight and is always getting tighter,” Damien said. “These donations are essential in making sure we have proper equipment to keep our community safe.”

Local business professional honoured in her field

APRIL UPDATE

By Marlene Jennings

A WEALTH of experience and expert customer service has provided the catalyst for Smartline mortgage advisor Teresa Harrison’s state finalist position for two Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) 2022 awards. Teresa, a respected financer in the Beerwah and Woodford areas, is recognised in two categories including MFAA Regional Finance Broker Award and Community Champion Award. The prestigious awards, judged by an independent panel of industry specialists, business professionals and experts, are the most rigorous in the Australian mortgage and finance industry with final judication in July. Teresa notes her excitement at being chosen as the awards “are not given lightly” and acknowledges working with “a great group of staff who are all very good at what they do”. “To be recognised as a finalist speaks volumes of their exceptional practice and professionalism in the mortgage and finance industry,” the MFAA added. This year has brought further acknowledgment to Teresa’s regional

office, chosen as one of three franchises for their efficiency to enter a Mortgage Choice multi loan writing pilot program. As testament to a career spanning 35 years in the finance industry, Teresa maintains a trust and relationship with her clients, some for over 20 years. In catering for first home buyers, it is often the case they are grandchildren of existing clients. Teresa states it is a journey she goes on with her clients, educating, assisting and always about their best interest, for example, “we help them to get their dream home, not a house”. For award-winning client care and expert mortgage advise, contact Teresa and her team at Smartline on 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 (Teresa).

ANOTHER big month for your Maleny Chamber of Commerce, with a win for our hospitality businesses due to the ending of COVID-19 restrictions on April 14. Maleny Commerce actively represented our hospitality businesses by requesting and pursuing an end to the mandate that unfairly targeted our hospitality sector, which is a major driver of our local economy. Congratulations to our hospitality businesses for surviving two years of varying restrictions, with good management by the business owners and great support from our local community. Scam alert. Beware scammers, who are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their attempts to get you, your business’ or your organisations money. For example, Maleny Commerce has been regularly targeted of late, by scammers pretending to be other committee members and requesting payment for invoices or to pay for gift cards whilst impersonating committee

with Spencer Shaw Chamber President members. Tricky one, because like many organisations much of the information needed to impersonate someone is readily available online, such as your organisations web page. The important thing to always check is that the email addresses are the legitimate contact you usually deal with, and if still uncertain confirm with a phone call or text. Be careful online and keep your money in your accounts! While on the subject of small business, May is Small Business Month in Queensland and to celebrate this, the Maleny and Montville Chambers are having a joint networking breakfast at Clouds - The Barrel. For more information and to book visit our website. Why celebrate small business? Well as discussed above, surviving trying times is one thing to celebrate; but also, Maleny is a small business town and community with these same small businesses at the heart of what makes Maleny a special place to live and work. Live, Love and Shop Local.

Fight for Fisher 2022 Judene Andrews

Ahead of the May 21, 2022 Federal Election, Glasshouse Country and Maleny News asked all six candidates in the Fisher electorate to tell readers who they are and why they want to be a politician. We also asked the candidates to identify one significant issue facing Fisher and what they propose to do about it. Next edition: The Big Pitch

Vickie Breckenridge

Australian Labor Party

I WANT to be involved with making a positive change for the community I live in. I am lucky enough to live in beautiful Caloundra, city of beaches and I love the place. I do the same things everyone else does. I have joined and volunteered with several sporting clubs, including Met Caloundra Surf Club and Caloundra Little Athletics. I work for Queensland’s largest health and community support provider, which offers aged care services, disability support, health care, and crisis response. I am the environmental sustainability manager, where my role is to reduce carbon emissions and to move my organisation toward 100% renewables. Over the past few years with the onset of COVID-19, I’ve become even more aware of issues of concern, many stemming from Scott Morrison who refuses to take responsibility, goes missing in action, blames others and can’t admit his mistakes. I decided we deserved better than a tired government like Scott Morrison’s, and I decided it’s time to do something about it. Our communities deserve better than a government that can’t help Australians quickly enough when fires and floods sweep away their homes and livelihoods;

and better than a government that will be remembered for its incompetence of mishandling every aspect of the COVID pandemic. And we deserve better than a government that puts our families’ future in harm’s way because it refuses to take climate change seriously, a government that refuses to support aged care properly and that doesn’t fund Medicare adequately. The cost to your hip pocket to see a Doctor has increased by 61% here in the Fisher electorate and finding a GP practice that bulk bills is extremely difficult. Labor will make positive changes in measured and affordable ways. Labor will: • Strengthen Medicare by making it easier to see the doctor. • Create secure local jobs by investing in fee-free TAFE and more university places, and making your job more secure with better pay and conditions. • Make child care cheaper so that it’s easier for working families to get ahead. • Make more things here in Australia Labor will work with business to invest in manufacturing and renewables to create more Australian jobs.

Animal Justice Party

I’M Vickie Breckenridge and I am the Federal Candidate for the Animal Justice Party in the Division of Fisher, here on the Sunshine Coast. I have lived in this area for over 20 years and I have four companion animals. I am now retired but I have volunteered in many different ways here on the coast, and still volunteer at Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge and Wildlife Rescue. Animals have always been my passion and I have always loved politics. It’s time for a new voice in Australian politics - a voice of kindness, non-violence and equality. The Animal Justice Party is a party of compassion. I am running for a seat in parliament because we need a kinder world. I have seen the fear in the eyes of animals going to be slaughtered. The Animal Justice Party is the only political party dedicated to ending the suffering of animals. Having members in parliament is the only way to provide better welfare for animals at a political level. Our mission is to secure the interest of animals and nature, through government policies. Our policies are grouped into three areas – animals, humans and the environment, and the AJP seeks to restore the balance between these areas. Each year three million animals are P: 0427 155 151 E: vickie.breckenridge.ajp@gmail.com

transported around the world by sea or air from Australia. The animals are subjected to unspeakable conditions. They are exposed to extreme weather, heat stress, overcrowding, disease, and appalling handling and slaughter practices at their destination. For years Australians have been voicing their opposition to live animal export, but the governments aren’t listening. In addition to advocating for an immediate ban, the AJP would support the transition of live animal export workers into industries that are humane and ethical, as well as environmentally and economically sustainable. The AJP is concerned with any development that involves habitat destruction and land clearing, and we are against urban sprawl. We see this as a problem here in Fisher and all coastal areas. When elected, we will ensure that any population increase happens within existing urban boundaries. We will also invest in research into urban planning that will improve sense of community and quality of life whilst also living harmoniously with wildlife and nature. Fight for Fisher 2022 Tony Moore

United Australia Party

TONY Moore lives on the Sunshine Coast in the seat of Fisher with his wife of 26 years and their four children. Tony, a business owner of 30 years, has been engaged in politics for more than a decade. Tony is a diverse, multi-disciplined and highly experienced professional who holds qualifications in Behavioural Science (Psychology), Child Protection, community engagement and intervention, and Legal Studies, as well as holding a Master of Business and Administration (MBA) and a Master of Politics and Public Policy (MPPP). He is politically experienced, a candidate in the seat of Buderim, Nicklin, the Senate and Fisher and in his spare time acts for the community’s best interests on issues of significance, social concerns or assists individuals facing injustice or unfair dealing. He believes that politics is the interface between the people and their future, one in which the people will either flourish, are favoured and free; or frustrated, failed, discriminated against and locked out of society. Tony adds that this future is determined often without the people’s genuine authority, input or voice, “the people are kept silent, intentionally railroaded and disenfranchised by the so-called ‘2-party E: fisher@unitedaustraliaparty.org.au W: www.unitedaustraliaparty.org.au

12

preferred’ duopoly so-to maintain their own power, controls, financial flows and rule over us”. Therefore it’s no surprise that the most significant issue for Tony facing Fisher is a lack of true representation, courage and that of a real voice for the people of Fisher from our elected member(s) in parliament. Tony says, “it’s rather insulting to us all, to have to listen to the same old promises dragged out every election for the last 20 years, by Slipper, Brough and Wallace and polished up and made to like an achievement, or advancement in their do-nothing machinery. To be frank, if the promises were more than just to get voters, any one of the last twenty years they could have ‘delivered’ rail to the Sunshine Coast; as well as better internet services to the Blackall Range and better human services and supports for the homeless, and those suffering in our communities. But here we are again.” So now the people of Fisher have a fresh opportunity this election for change and to escape from the last twenty years. You can do this by changing how you vote and take back your sovereignty and rebuke their abuses of power - to set us free from Liberal and Labor - and unite Australia as one. W: www.tonymoore.info

Sam Schriever

Pauline Hanson’s One Nation

IT’S often said our younger generation is our future, well that’s me, our younger generation. I’m 20 years old and the frustrations I’ve had have motivated me to run in this election. I couldn’t keep sitting back and watching our country go down-hill. Instead of complaining about it I decided to put my hand up and fight for what’s right. One of the biggest issues, not only of Fisher but Australia- wide, is simply the cost of living, including housing. It’s all well and good saying we need “xyz” but if people can’t house themselves and feed their kids nothing else really matters. We can simultaneously reduce the cost of living while creating jobs, lowering the youth un-employment rate and contributing to housing affordability. We can do this by making fuel and electricity cheaper. Every business is either heavily directly or indirectly affected by the cost of fuel and electricity. The key to electricity is not to kill our coal industry while alternative options aren’t yet viable. We support exploring nuclear power - if you want clean and cheap energy

that’s it. It’s 2022, we’ve advanced technologically enough to not need to fear nuclear. The key to lowering the price of fuel, specifically diesel, is to have a true 90 day reserve of crude oil held in Australia and the means to refine that oil into domestically consumable fuels. So when the price of oil goes up, we can strategically release that fuel into domestic markets to lower fuel prices. Also, GST on fuel needs to be scrapped; fuel is double taxed with excise at a rate of $0.442 per litre and 10% GST. Reducing the cost of diesel and electricity will make building houses cheaper, rent cheaper, food cheaper, fuel cheaper, insurances cheaper, lower youth unemployment, stimulate wage growth while making Australian manufacturing a more attractive option. Killing coal and not caring about strategic fuel management will achieve the exact opposite of everything I’ve just listed. I’m all for going green but let’s not do it at the detriment of our economy and country.

Fight for Fisher 2022 Andrew Wallace

I’VE been the Federal Member for Fisher since 2016. With my wife, Leonie and our four daughters, I have called the Sunshine Coast home for nearly thirty years. What drives me, what gets me out of bed early in the morning and keeps me out till late at night is that I genuinely like helping people. I want Fisher to be the place to be for education, employment and retirement. That means delivering on the things that matter to local families and their businesses. That’s why I’ve fought hard against Council’s casino, Palascszuk’s jail and the light rail plans currently before the State Government. I’ve taken action at a national level to address online and credit-card gambling; to reduce domestic violence; and to keep kids safe online. We want our kids to embrace the unique opportunities available to them, with high quality training. That’s why I’ve fought for a refocus on apprenticeships and vocational education. We now have a record number of apprentices on the Sunshine Coast and nation-wide. We want local manufacturers and a growing defence industry to kickstart, expand and employ a skilled workforce for the future. That’s why I’ve helped P: 5493 5556 E: andrew.wallace.mp@aph.gov.au

Renay Wells

Liberal National Party secure tens of millions of dollars for innovators across Fisher. And we want to cement the Sunshine Coast as a national leader in mental healthcare. That’s why I’ve delivered $12m for The Wishlist Centre, $19m for the USC Thompson Institute and PTSD Centre, $7.3m for the Wandi Nerida Eating Disorder Facility and a new headspace in Caloundra. The most important thing for our region is delivering the road and rail infrastructure we need to get people home sooner and safer. That’s why I’m fighting for better roads and rail across our community, securing over $5.3 billion in funding for projects like the North Coast Rail duplication, and the Bruce Highway and Steve Irwin Way upgrades. My number one priority since 2016 has been to make Sunshine Coast Rail a reality. That’s why I was proud to stand with Ted O’Brien MP to announce $1.6bn for heavy rail in the Budget. This project will connect hinterland and coastal communities with Brisbane, create 9,550 jobs during construction and unlock incredible opportunities for locals in the lead-up to the 2032 Games. Greens Party

MY name is Renay Wells. I’m a fashion designer and an offshore production and impact specialist. I grew up in Bundaberg and Brisbane, lived and worked in Sydney, Shanghai and Los Angeles, and finally returned to paradise - AKA the Sunshine Coast - after 17 years. I’m a beachy South East Queensland girl through and through! I created my own swimwear brand specialising in unconventional materials, and now I’m completing my MBA. Issues around ethical and sustainable business practices in the fashion industry and beyond have me fired up, and I want Fisher to have a representative who’ll do something about it. The biggest issue for so many people in Fisher right now is the Sunshine Coast’s housing crisis. Families are struggling to find a rental or pay the mortgage, and lots of people - particularly young people - are totally locked out of the housing market. We live in a beautiful part of the world, but it shouldn’t be impossible to find affordable housing here; and it doesn’t have to be. Unfortunately both Labor and the LNP have taken millions in donations from the property industry over the last decade, and in return they gave big developers and speculators special deals

and tax breaks, failed to invest in public housing, and rigged our housing system so it’s easier to buy your sixth home than your first. We need a plan to house everyone on the social housing wait list, and permanently bring down housing costs so no one’s left homeless or facing overwhelming debt. The Greens’ housing policy would deliver one million affordable homes across Australia over the next 20 years. Our plan includes public housing, where rent is capped at 25% of income and you get a lifetime right to your home, and a shared ownership scheme where first home buyers can buy a home where they want to live for just $300,000. We’re also the only party with a plan to take on the rental crisis by capping rent increases, banning rent bidding and ending no-grounds evictions. The major parties might tell you it’s not possible to fix the housing crisis, but that’s not true. The Greens’ plans are fully costed and funded by finally making billionaires and big corporations pay their fair share of tax. I think it’s only fair they pay a little more so everyone in our community can have a roof over their head!

Remembering lives lost to domestic violence

Personalities’ time to shine By Mitch Gaynor

THE hinterland community is set to gather at Tesch Park in Maleny on May 10 to honour lives lost to domestic violence. The event is being run by Speak Up Now – Stop Domestic and Family Violence, in conjunction with the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC). More than one life a week is lost to domestic violence and the candlelight ceremony will honour the men, women and children who have died in this way. The ceremony is in conjunction with Speak Up Now’s ongoing campaign to end domestic violence. Last year it gained funding to promote Hairdressers with Hearts, which trains hairdressers and barbers to recognise signs of domestic violence and provide the right advice and referrals. Renee Harris from Barbers of Maleny said she jumped at the chance to do the online training. “When you’re seeing someone every five weeks you build a rapport and learn to care for your customer,” she said. “We just let them know there is help available,” Renee said. DETAILS: Tesch Park, Maleny from 5pm. Includes guest speakers and BBQ and live music afterwards at MNC.

IT’S a modern-day twist to an age-old show category where only personalities shine. This year’s Maleny Show is kicking off in May with a reboot of the old ‘show girls’ category, replacing it with a refreshed ‘Show Personality’ program. The program is aimed from ages 12+, with the ultimate goal to help entrants develop social skills and resilience in social settings. Show Personality coordinater Felicity Heading said her aim was help create ‘strong, capable’ people who can carry themeselves confidently in society. “I’m very passionate about developing skills within these entrants for them to take on to future endeavours, whether that’s the workplace or the school,” Felicity said. “It’s about building confidence.” The program will consist of a workshop, an interview component and a high tea on May 7 during which the winners will be announced. The workship will focus on building confidence and self-esteem, along with discussions about body image and creating “a healthy version of ourselves”, Felicity said, adding that teaching people how to cope with the world’s negative’s would create a bigger positive. “I see a lot of young kids come through the workplace, and it’s frustrating and sad the lack of social skills that just aren’t there,” she said. “This isn’t going to change the world, but it is a step in the right direction in building these young adults up into strong, capable people. As part of the personality program, Felicity will introduce Amia (pictured), who started her own jewellery business at the age of 11. Amia will make a ring for each of the contestants, but importantly is hoped to be an inspiration for contestants to look to her entrepreneurial motivation.

Amia sells her ‘twisted jewellery’ rings at some markets as well as on instagram. “I was inspired by my friends and thought it would be great to give it a go,” she said. Down Under Craft Club Landsborough celebrates 20 years of creative crafts THE Down Under Craft Club celebrates a special milestone on May 15. A milestone which represents 20 years of creative ideas; 20 years of imagining what can be achieved through using their hands and minds, individually and on joint projects. The Landsborough Hall has been home for this club for 20 years. Originally the groups started upstairs in the Hall building, with three ladies who met on a Wednesday to create crafts together and socialise. Slowly the names grew, women came, others left and each time they took their new skills and ideas, and their lives were richer for the experience. As space became available, the club moved downstairs and with an improved permanent location, the club expanded their skills and learnt new techniques combined with practiced old skills; through the sharing of knowledge formed many long term memberships. During this period they opened their craft rooms to the community and until this day, every Saturday the Craft Room is open to the public to come and purchase specially made hand crafted goods for gifts, or for personal use in their homes.

Creations include quilting, embroidery, crochet and knitted items, jewellery and many other items which cater for craft items from birth to adulthood. Handbags, aprons, baby cloths, rugs and much more can be found by those who choose to stay a while and explore items on sale. The club survived a flooding, the ebbs and flows of membership and a pandemic and they are still enthusiastic about the items they create. Every Tuesday and Wednesday morning the ladies gather, swap ideas, teach each other new skills, and create new crafts and have a much needed chat. To celebrate, the Down Under Craft Group will have a high tea on Wednesday morning, May 11 for past and present members. The Group are encouraging those who have been involved to contact Margaret on 0439 782 874 and join the members to exchange their stories of past creative moments. The Club is also organising an open day on Saturday, May 14 and will welcome anyone who is interested in expanding their knowledge and skills to drop in and say hello.

CHARGE your glasses and surrender to the sumptuous music as the Maleny Singers bring Franz Lehar’s most popular work, ‘The Merry Widow’, back to the stage. The Singers will tell the story of a romance between Count Danilo - sung by Rod Johnson - and his ex-flame, the newly-widowed and fabulously wealthy Anna Glavari - sung by Viera Keogh. Pontevedro is on the verge of bankruptcy and Anna must marry a local to save the Fatherland. The action is set at the Pontevedrian embassy in Paris, and Anna has no shortage of suitors. along to such favourites as ‘Vilja’, the operetta’s best known aria, and ‘The Merry Widow Waltz’. Will Danilo finally declare his love for Anna, or will a Frenchman win the day and send Pontevedro into despair? Directed and conducted by Margaret Taylor, the Singers are accompanied by a 25-piece orchestra and joined by dancers as the party scales new heights in this spectacular production. Mark your calendar for two weekends of 11-12 and 18-19 June at the Maleny Community Centre. This will be one to remember. Tickets via trybooking.com and Maleny Information Centre from May.

From Patricia, Amanda and Staff at Beerwah Library

Volunteering at Libraries makes a difference BEERWAH Library member and volunteer Vikki (pictured) loves to bring her work home with her. Vikki has experienced first-hand just how much bringing the library into someone’s home means to them through the Home Library Services volunteering program. “I visit three Glasshouse area clients and it is the highlight of my week,” Vikki said. “I delight in being able to select and deliver just the right thing to keep each person interested.” Vikki went on to say that an added advantage is the ability to work with books. “Books play such an integral part in people’s lives because books expand your world and give you a way to experience just about anything. “This is such a great thing no matter where you are in life, but so meaningful when you can’t get out and about,” she said. Vikki has volunteered as a Home Library Services volunteer with Beerwah Library for four years and she loves it. Being community minded and retiring from a people focussed career, Vikki was attracted to the Home Library Service role for the connections and

conversation. She helps borrowers who are unable to visit the local library due to illness, disability, or limited mobility. “During COVID-19, books and reading about other lives were so important,” she said. “We still delivered and just kept our distance. These visits were really appreciated.” Library members can access the Home Library Service and have items delivered to their home by contacting 5475 8989. If you’re interested in volunteering, submit an expression of interest via the library’s website https://library.sunshinecoast. qld.gov.au/Services/Volunteer

YOU Live music lifts our spirits

As a resident of Maleny, I was shocked to discover that the planning department has ordered live music to end at Maleny Lane in May. Since the Councils stated values are to support communities, creativity and the Arts, this decision seems to go against its own stated policies. The Maleny Lane venue supports and provides audience exposure for a great number of local emerging musicians and performers, it is a genuine and inclusive creator of community for all ages, where people can meet new friends, it provides livelihoods for a number of food venues with great quality and affordable food, it attracts many visitors, it puts Maleny on the map for interstate and overseas visitors, it is open air and thus reduces risk of COVID spread, and it means that Maleny has some nightlife, rather than being ‘dead’ after five pm. As far as noise is concerned, there are no close residential neighbours, being right in the centre of the business centre. Many people suffered mental health problems and depression as a result of isolation and restrictions during lockdowns, venues such as Maleny Lane have played a vital role in lifting spirits by bringing people together to share meals and hear good music. I hope the council will listen to the people of Maleny and the many visitors to Maleny Lane, and reverse this unwise decision. Pippa Howells Maleny

Don’t wait for the next natural disaster

It is clear that extreme climate events have become more frequent and more extreme, not just in Australia but right around our planetary home. Climate Action Now! Is the mantra of those taking leadership in raising awareness that we human residents must take responsibility for the carbon dioxide pollution that is warming and destabilising our planet’s atmosphere. But what action can individuals take apart from supporting pressure groups and investors’ intent on switching from fossil fuel to renewables? Although some say that Australia’s contribution to pollution is small, we are actually the 15th highest national polluter of all. If we show stronger action globally, that gives us the right to a louder voice to convince the bigger polluters to move quickly. At the personal action level the high carbon footprint of some “better off” among us, who have considerable disposable income, resulting from lifestyle choices like a palatial home, a large

and frequently replaced motor vehicle, frequent air travel, and hobby-farm land maintained as lawn with “recreational mowing”. The opportunity to provide “carbon capture and storage” through tree planting would be a commendable choice. I apologise to the Millennial generation and younger among us, for what they will experience in the next few decades. As a member of the “Perennial” generation (pre WW2) I was unaware for decades of the accumulating impact of my lifestyle on the planet. We older ones have let you down in rather the same way that failed diplomacy between nations does, due to ignorance of historical trends, generates the sort of crisis now playing out in eastern Europe. Just like that crunch, the climate crunch has come upon us now, climate action has become urgent for survival. So let us vote next month for leaders who will do something now. Mike Foale Maleny

Two approaches to CAMCOS

Billions of dollars of spending proposals have been announced by the Morrison/Wallace government in recent days. Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace has announced a figure and credited himself for the CAMCOS (Caboolture to Maroochydore Corridor Study) rail corridor from Beerwah to the coast - a project that has been on the drawing board under both State and Federal Governments since 2009. Interestingly he has quoted a figure similar to a project to add a line to an existing rail line south of Brisbane. By contrast, nothing yet exists of the line from Beerwah to Maroochydore except a proposed route. Clearly he is underestimating the cost. Does he have a motive? Is he simply uninformed? Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey in a radio interview responded that the CAMCOS project is currently in a ‘preliminary evaluation’ stage. The planning and design will be followed by a Business Case Study which is scheduled for late 2023. He explained that such transport infrastructure projects are jointly planned and funded by committees of people from all levels of government. He stressed the value of cooperation. In contrast, Mr Wallace gives us an inaccurate spending announcement five weeks out from an election and finishes with a quip that he hopes Labor doesn’t play politics with this project. A nice illustration of two very different styles of communication with us, the people. Gillian Pechey Maleny

Is it that hard to show respect

I remember when the “consent” app was put forward by the current Government, and how much derision it received. Despite the millions spent on it, it has proved to be useless. I, for one, think it would have been much better to create an “entitlement” app to afford men the opportunity to look at and check off a list of the ways in which they feel entitled to treat women with minimal respect before they enter into a liaison. I understand that it can be confusing to identify what kind of behaviour represents entitlement, particularly for men who have been able to assume and get away with such behaviour for so long. I’d like to put forward a simple example that we can all keep an eye out for as this election looms. There are rules around political signage, to which some politicians adhere to carefully and some ignore – dare I say with quite a sense of entitlement. For example, I remember at a recent election seeing LNP signs tied or nailed to public utilities like power poles and the railing around the Maleny roundabout. This is not legal, but somehow, the LNP folk felt they were entitled to ignore those legalities. I spoke to a couple of their members about it, and received a deeply disrespectful sneer of ‘who cares’, and a clear sense of ‘entitlement’ around doing it. Let’s see if during this election campaign, the LNP can show a little more respect and follow the rules around political signage. It could be a simple but powerful contribution towards being more respectful in other ways – like towards women in their political party. Jacinta Foale Maleny

Make a difference

Finally… we have a date where YOU can make things better for this country. A chance to reset and vote for the team that will put decency ahead of profit, and honesty ahead of marketing. I think Australia has truly lost its way. Our reputation abroad has suffered an enormous setback. Our Federal Government had to be brought kicking and screaming to the climate debate and managed to shock and disappoint everyone from our King-inWaiting to our Global Youth. In Europe we have been identified as having a mean spirited, dishonest leadership that will say and do anything that would serve our interests before anything else, and the Youth in USA have been vocal in their condemnation as they see our Federal Government as having a ‘Fascist Agenda’. How far have we fallen? I used to be proud to be Australian, now I am continually embarrassed by our mediocre leadership, and lack of integrity. If we don’t have pride in our country, if we don’t have a system that puts our Nation and social justice ahead of corporate profit… we have nothing. Mr Morrison says they have a better record at managing the economy. Not everyone agrees with that and I conclude with a statement made by Bobby Kennedy, US Attorney General in 1968. “The calculation of GDP does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages, the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It measures neither our wit or

our courage, neither our wisdom nor our learning, neither our compassion nor our devotion to country. It measures everything, in short, except what makes life worthwhile.” Pam Maegdefrau Montville

Questions for all

Why did the council allow concrete in an environmentally sensitive area of wetlands habitat of Glasshouse Mountains District Park? I do not see the National Parks using concrete - only wooden boardwalks in wetlands areas. Or better yet, close the wetland area off completely and put concrete path loops on either end of it. Why are the real estates not helping the local community, only their financial world? Where is all the land for community projects? Sheds for young people to do things, electric power points for cars everywhere, not just Maleny. We do not own this planet, we share it. Women’s Sheds. In relation to green bin exemptions, where are the biofuel collection and composting zones and community gardens in a green wildlife corridor filled environment? Where are all the shelters for travelling/homeless and not just in big populations? Indigenous gardens and areas for all every five or ten streets? Why can we not have a futuristic caring green technology world alongside the earth and community that supports it? Why is it that big money interests get the most publicity when they are no more important than a local charitable organisation? NAME SUPPLIED

JOHN MCGRATH – WHAT’S YOUR PROPERTY WORTH?

McGrath CEO & Founder John McGrath

Pricing a property comes down to comparisons, and it’s more of an art than a science. The agents you interview will give you a list of comparable sales, or you can find them yourself on the major portals. No two homes are identical, so you need to adjust for any differences to determine your likely selling price range. Another tip is to attend some open inspections. Opens provide a wealth of information for sellers. Spend a couple of Saturdays finding out what’s on the market and what prices are being achieved. The key issue to consider is, “how does this property compare with mine?”.

If you can acquire some first-hand knowledge of prices, you’ll be able to verify the agents’ valuations of your home. Another option is to get an independent valuer to appraise your home. Valuers are highly trained and unbiased. They use a formula based on comparable sales, the size of the land and home, and the condition of the home and improvements. You’ll get a written appraisal, which might give you the confidence to make an informed pricing decision. Just remember, valuers don’t factor in the emotion of buyers. That’s part of the marketing process and what a professional agent will do in their negotiations to get you the highest price. The key to extracting a premium price for a property – in any location, at any time, in any market – is emotionally connecting a number of buyers to your home and creating competition between them. Why it’s important to price it right from day one. One of the great mistakes vendors can make is putting an inflated price – a hopeful price – on their property. They figure if no one makes an offer at that level, they can always bring the price down.

The challenge here is that when a home takes more than a few months to sell, the rumours start. Everyone wants to know what’s wrong with it. People start focusing on all the negatives to do with the property. There’s a phenomenon in selling real estate that I call the ‘buyers’ wave’. What I’ve found is that the first three to four weeks that a home is on the market is when you get the maximum amount of buyer interest. Think about it. Unless they’ve started looking this week, buyers are mainly on the look-out for NEW listings. After a few weeks on the home hunt, they’ve probably seen most of the

suitable properties in their preferred areas and price range. So, when a new property hits the market, there’s a great flurry of buyer activity, with lots of people attending inspections. If they like the home, buyers will express some interest, otherwise they’ll move on to other listings. After four weeks, buyer interest tends to tail off quite dramatically. Like it or not, the property market is very price sensitive – especially after a boom when the fear of missing out has been replaced by the fear of paying too much, so work closely with your preferred agent to ensure your price guide is right from the start.

MCGRATH’S OPEN HOME INSPECTION PLANNER Ensure you don’t miss any open homes with our handy inspection scheduler to keep a running record of the properties you want to inspect, when they are open for inspection, the details of the agent and important information such as sale price and inspection /auction times. It even prompts you to rank your properties from 1 – 10 after you

have inspected them to help you narrow down your search faster. Staying organised and finding the right property is easier with our Open Home Scheduler. To request a copy of our Home Inspection Planner, contact our wonderful team via phone or email on (07) 5405 3628 or FOMBeerwah@mcgrath.com.au

music today with Dr Michael Whiticker

Muzika at Maleny IT IS with great enthusiasm that I mention a monthly music event that we (the Glasshouse Musos), with the support of the local community, are running in Maleny. Called Muzika it opened on the first Thursday in April and, not surprisingly, we asked ourselves at the time “will an audience come?” One might argue it is not a good time to put on an event and expect an audience to attend, but after two years of “living in the wilderness”, most in the performing arts industry are thinking any time is the right time for putting on an event these days. Muzika is a rebadging of the very successful Club Acoustic that ran at Maleny RSL for six years until late last year. Our first audience in April was modest, but as the regulars noted, it was full of first timers to this sort of show, so a good sign of where we might be able to take it. To say the music was uplifting, at times sublime on this opening night, is an understatement. It seemed that each act inspired those following them and they each lifted to the standard being set for the evening. I won’t mention what the highlights were for me, as it seems that each person I spoke to was excited by something different in each performer they heard, but I will list who played and their order of presentation. Thank you Jenny Fitzgibbon and Lyn (Frank and Fearless), Kat Davie and Greg Beattie, Peter G, Paul B and Mikey D (the Swing Brothers, with Sister P), the Karen Law Family band, Kelly Cork, Noel Gardner and Alex Bridge and the final act - Tom Richter, Ian Belcher and Peter Hudson. The night wouldn’t have been complete without our guest speakers Susie Duncan and Andrew McLean along with MC Noel Gardner who added their own special magic to the proceedings. Short presentations from poets, story tellers and guest speakers on a range of entertaining subjects were a feature of Muzika in its past life and take us perhaps closer to the thriving community that is found here, evidenced as well in the volunteers who step up to assist events such as ours to go beyond the planning stage. Thank you, every one of you! We are back with our second Muzika on Thursday May 5 from 6.30pm. We don’t yet know who all the acts are, but rest assured they will be good. One of them is The Levee and they stunned us with their virtuosity and passion when we first heard them last year so if they even just aim for that level again we will be more than happy. Brendan O’Shea - the Mindfulness Poet, will be our MC for the evening, and he is always a heap of fun. The food is yummy, the drinks are plentiful, the venue is spacious and the sound is exceptional. It is only $10 to get in so do try to join us for a great music-based evening in Maleny in May. Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. By Mitch Gaynor OPENING night of the Maleny Players’ production of Playhouse Creatures saw theatregoers get a first taste of what it means to act like your life depends on it. In Creatures out the door goes the frugalities of puritanical England and ushered in are actresses appearing on the public stage for the first time. The tale of this tumultuous time features superb performances from the entire cast, including Barbara Thomas as Mary Betterton, Catriona McKechnie as Doll Common, Erin Holland as Nell Gwynne and Ella Eade as Elizabeth Farley. It’s passionate, comic and at times tragic, with the audience sensing these pioneers are never allowed to venture too far from the threat of the ‘bear pit’. ELECTED IT HAS been a fabulous month with the weather clearing up, and life going back to a new normal as we welcomed tourists to the beautiful Sunshine Coast over the Easter school holidays. The Beerwah RSL team have put in a massive effort in fundraising leading up to ANZAC Day, selling pins and badges out the front of Woolworths as usual, plus their massive fundraiser on the day with a grand prize of a TV, which I was happy to donate. In the area of community safety, I was delighted to launch the Sunshine Coast Community Camera Alliance this week with Minister for Police Mark Ryan, with our QPS Commissioner Katarina Carrol

with Jason Hunt State Member for Caloundra

coming up to join us in breaking the news. This is part of a state-wide safety initiative encouraging the community to work with police by registering their CCTV systems to assist in preventing and solving crime. We’re encouraging everyone to get involved. Lastly, let me take this opportunity say thank you to the men and women who have served and are serving, those who have made the ultimate sacrifice we say in all humility, thank you. I spoke at Beerwah State High School for their ANZAC ceremony on Thursday, and I reminded our students that our service men and women were not much older than they themselves. Yet they were heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice.

MALENY Showgrounds Bushcare Group is calling for extra hands to help protect and restore the original subtropical rainforest of the Blackall Range. The group meet the second Sunday of each month, to improve a location either by weeding or planting an area that was once degraded. The group says it’s very satisfying seeing something that is improved and special for the ecology of our area. Did you know 18 volunteers in 2018 spared 200 hours of their time removing 30 wheelie bins of weeds and planted 151 plants? I encourage and hope that our community can either join or look to improve their patch as well. The next working bee is the second Sunday of the month, 8:30 – 11.30am, at Maleny Showgrounds, Stanley River Road, Maleny.

Under Your Birth Tree ESTHER Jeffery holds many certifications under her belt and with a constant thirst to learn is constantly adding tools to support women who may be struggling to find their power and take charge of their lives. Esther’s past continues to shape the woman she is today and sparked a pathway into becoming a holistic birth worker. Her business, Under Your Birth Tree, supports women utilising a variety of modalities. With a background in Nursing and student-Midwifery, Esther chose to leave the medical system and pursue her passion for providing holistic care to her clients. She studied hypnotherapy, time line therapy, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), and somantic sexology. “The completion of my study in somatic sexology sparked my passion even deeper and affirmed my purpose on this planet was to support other women to take charge of their lives,” said Esther.

&

WELLBEING

“To reclaim their power, coming from a heart centered space and sourcing this power and validation from within, not externally.” Esther said she meets women where they are at, and because of her depth of personal and clinical experience, she has the capacity to hold space and create safety for all experiences and stories. Esther supports women through providing full spectrum birthwork and conscious conception coaching (from preconception, antenatal, labour, birth and postpartum) predominantly working in the homebirth/ free birth capacity. She also provides somatic sexology for women who are experiencing difficulties relating to others, who want to re-integrate back into intimacy following childbirth, hysterectomy, mastectomy, termination or sexual trauma; women who want to deepen their understanding of themselves, to heal on a deeper level from sexual trauma, and to navigate challenging relationship concerns or issues. www.underyourbirthtree.com.au

IN THE

With Brownie

Jobs for the yard in May •

• • If you have had spring flowering seedlings which haven’t survived the flooding rains, it’s not too late to plant Iceland poppies, pansies or snapdragons to fill in the gaps. • Grass growth will be starting to slow down now but weeds still grow. Keep on top of weeds, especially bindi-eye, clover and tropical chickweed. • Bare rooted roses will be in stores now but don’t rush in and buy, as the optimum time is the end of next month. • Gingers and heliconias that have finished flowering – such as parrots beak heliconia – can be cut back now, leaving the new growth for next seasons flowering display. • Apply a light dusting of lime to bare veggie beds. Don’t apply fertliser at the same time as the lime reacts with the nitrogen creating ammonia gas.

34

• Plant leafy coriander plants now. The cooler temperatures will stop them bolting to seed. • Your strawberry plants should be coming on well now. Apply a little pelletised manure and use fish and seaweed solutions regularly over the plants to keep them in good health. It’s not too late to put some in if you haven’t yet. • It’s an ideal time to work in the garden

because the temperature has dropped and so has the humidity. If you’ve got a major building or landscaping project, start it this month. Dahlias that are dying back should be trimmed off and those that have not yet started to die back can be trimmed to half their height. They’ll need to be lifted out of the ground next month. Some fruit fly will still be active, so maintain fruit fly traps and destroy fallen or spoilt fruit. Plant new citrus trees this month and next. Always remove any fruit before planting, or better still select trees without fruit for more vigour. Do not fertilise young trees until 3-4 months after planting. If you have not applied boron to your pawpaw trees, do it this month. Use one teaspoon per tree.

garden Vegetables

Plant beetroot, silver beet, broad beans, onions, spring onions, peas, carrot, kohl rabi, lettuce, radish, turnip, capsicum, celery, beans, garlic, leeks, parsnip, peas, potatoes, sweet potato, tomato, broccoli, parsley, cabbage, cauliflower and coriander.

Flowers

Plant alyssum, marigold, petunia, calendula, cineraria, cornflower, dianthus, hollyhock, kale, lobelia, pansy, phlox, Iceland poppy, primula, snapdragon, statice, stock, sweet pea (seedling), viola, carnation, cyclamen, foxglove, gaillardia, salvia, sunflower and verbena.

She is a very large girl so isn’t too keen on being picked up, but does enjoy being stroked once she feels comfortable in her new surrounds. Blossom would do better in more mature homes than one with toddlers.

Age: 3 years 10 months Sex: Female Price: $300 Weight: 31 kg Summary:

Lovely Piper was sadly bought back to us again after her previous home didn’t work out. She was described as the perfect dog all except when she got over excited she would harass the other dog in the home. She will need a good leader to help guide her, plus some obedience training to help her become a well rounded canine citizen. Piper needs to be the only dog in her new home, and as she tends to jump up on people, is best with teenagers rather than young children. Piper will need secure fencing like all dogs to keep her safely at home.

High performance cricket coach looks forward to inclusion series By Sonia Isaacs Clark

Come have a hit with Kenny’s Angels By Jennifer Kent

CRICKET Australia have announced that Australia’s top cricketers with a disability will battle it out in an Ashes series against England in a highly anticipated return to play scheduled for June 1-15. Coach of the Australian Cricket Team for players with an Intellectual Disability, Maleny resident Nathan Dodd, said it had been a tough few years for the sport, with the previous two National Cricket Inclusion Championships being called off due to the pandemic and travel restrictions. He said the upcoming International Cricket Inclusion Series to be held at the Australian Cricket Campus in Brisbane would be a fantastic opportunity for players to get back on the field and represent their country in the sport they love. “Obviously the whole community, and not just the cricket community, has had a lot of challenges over the last couple of years due to the pandemic. For me personally it will be great to see our players out on the ground and having fun taking on England,” said Nathan. The series will see the Australian Blind, Deaf and Intellectual Disability squads play five T20Is and three ODI (one day international) matches against their British opponents. Nathan said this will be the first international series since the 2019 Global Games in Brisbane for the Intellectual Disability team and will no doubt be a very competitive ashes series for all three teams competing. With players ranging from ages 18-34, Nathan explained that the process of finalising the squad of 14/15 is currently underway, and he had been travelling interstate to see how the players were progressing while also keeping an eye out on any potential new talented players. “Once the team is finalised we will have a pre-tournament high

DON’T be spooked by Friday the 13th, head along for a fun-filled day at the Beerwah Golf Club for the second annual Kenny’s Angels Charity Golf Day, all in support of Endeavour Foundation. Kenny’s Angels are made up of local mums Sonia Heilig, Susan Ellwood and Amanda Smyth and are looking forward to hitting the green in their charity fundraising event ahead of the big 2022 Great Endeavour Rally event later the year. The day will consist of 18 holes, with fun activities along the way and a chance to win some great prizes. Participants can even nominate, through a donation, a pro golfer to take a shot on the green on their behalf. “We’re excited to this year have a team entering from the Queensland Bulls Masters,” shared Amanda, who is hoping for a great turn out to top last year’s efforts of raising over $8,500. “What we’ve learned about people and businesses in Glasshouse Country in the past is that they astonish us with their support and generosity, and we’d love for any local businesses that can’t

High performance coach Nathan Dodd with squad members performance camp in Brisbane. Currently the players are training in their state satellite programs, and we also conduct online sessions with strength and conditioning specialists for the squad,” said Nathan. As a Level 3 high performance coach, Nathan has reached the highest level of cricket coaching accreditation in Australia. As well as coaching the Australian Cricket Team for players with an Intellectual Disability since 2017, as an elite level players coach, in recent years Nathan has also consulted internationally in countries including Nepal and New Zealand. Nathan has been a passionate advocate for the game since he was a boy, and as a youth played for NSW, going on to play first grade Premier Cricket in Sydney with Manly Warringah, as well as 2nd XI County Cricket with Kent and Worcestershire in England. He said he particularly loved the tactical and technical side of the game as well as the competitiveness. “Nowadays I really love the coaching mentoring side of the game, but the best part is the friendships I’ve been able to form all over the world. I love being able to have a positive impact on young peoples lives and cricket coaching is my way of achieving that,” said Nathan. www.cricket.com.au

enter a team this year, but who still want to get involved, to donate items to auction on the day.” The trio of mums - who adopted their name after heading along to a Kenny Rogers concert pre-pandemic - have been raising money, spirits and dust since 2019, and last year took out the win at the 2021 Rally across the Simpson Desert. For more information on this great local team and their fundraising fun, follow ‘Kenny’s Angels – Great Endeavour Rally’ on Facebook or visit their website www.kennysangels.com. Teams of four can register of the Charity Golf Day, which kicks off at 10am by contacting Beerwah Golf Club on 5494 0630, or if you’re not part of a team head along at 9am on Friday, May 13 and organisers will endeavour to get you into a team. Sponsorship packages start from $300 per team. If you can’t head along but you’d like to support Kenny’s Angels, donations to the Endeavour Foundation can be made through their website.

Dana is bruised but ready to bounce back Giant leap for Taylah By Kirra Livingstone

By Kirra Livingstone

BEERWAH boxing champ Dana ‘Deadly’ Coolwell says he is “bummed” about his split points decision loss to Venezuela’s Ender Luces this month, but already has his sights set on another big fight in June. The 23-year-old said the disappointment of the loss had quickly sunk in after going toe-toe-toe with the big-hitting Luces over 10 bruising rounds. “It didn’t sink in until the morning after… but spending time with my partner and my coach, I feel a bit better now,” he said. “Overall, it was a pretty good experience. I’m still a bit bummed but all I can do now is look forward to the next one.

TALENTED Beerwah dancer Taylah Gela has been crowned age champion for 13 year olds at the 2022 Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod. Beerwah Masterpiece Dance owner Sarah Kwarcianyi could not speak more highly of Taylah’s efforts saying she is an “exceptional and committed student”. “She placed first in three of her routines, first in lyrical, first in jazz, first in acrobatics, and she got a highly committed for contemporary, and that made her the overall age champion for 13 years age group,” said Sarah. Most students perform about three to four solo eisteddfods a year, but

“This one was harder because it was in my weight division, so I’m just taking this week to relax and head back next week into training. Despite the loss, the opportunities are still knocking with the likelihood of fighting on a huge night for Australian boxing in June. “I’ll be on the main event card, it’ll be a massive card, they’re talking about (top cruiserweight) Jai Opetaia,” he said. “He’s fighting for a world title actually, so it will be massive. “For them to want me to be on that card still even after my loss, I’m pretty grateful for my promoters and my team.” His coach, Stephen Pitt, said Dana’s attitude both in the ring and after the fight was a testament to his character and showed he had the ability to bounce back. “I’m extremely proud of him, extremely proud of how he conducted himself in the ring and even more so how he conducted himself outside the ring post fight,” he said. Both agreed Dana needed to be the aggressor more often during fights, which will be a focal point in their training preparation for his next fight.

You’ve so many things going for you right now, Taurus. This week’s new moon in your own sign starts to correct any recent glitches in your life. Venus in your financial sector could also provide opportunities. Sorting the good from the bad hasn’t been an easy process lately but, thankfully, the clarity you’re seeking comes by week’s end.

This week brings you directly in touch with your need for action. You’re ready to get things moving, perhaps even break new ground. On a psychological level, too, you’re more in touch with your inner rage. It’s how you channel this raw energy that makes all the difference. Release any pent-up emotions by taking positive, constructive action.

This isn’t a time for quiet contemplation. Instead, push for the things you want. You’re riding in the slipstream of benevolent planetary forces and hopefully you’ll use this week for what it is - a ticket to success. Expect some extra cash too. In relationships, make all your daring moves by week’s end. After that, the magic could wane.

Keep your ideas quiet, Leo. This is no time to give competitors the edge, nor is it a time for a leap of faith. Despite your impatience to move on, the current cosmic line-up discourages hurry. Neither should you do or say anything that will be seen as a challenge. The same goes for your love life unless you’re a fan of one-night stands.

Any recent indecision is replaced by assertiveness this week, and fence-sitting is replaced by determination. Virgos position themselves centre stage - leaving the rest of the cast in the shadows. After that, it shouldn’t be too hard to achieve top billing. A money-spinning project could also catch your interest.

Bolt all doors that may invite invasion of privacy. Your financial and personal affairs, in particular, will stand more chance of success if they stay hidden. Guard your secrets and money well. Someone wants to take advantage. Stay focused, or you could find yourself misled or, even worse, swindled.

As ever you’re sharp as a tack, Scorpio - so here’s another week when little sneaks past you. But this kind of awareness can be a bane as well as a blessing. When constantly on full alert, you rarely get the chance to relax. So try to occasionally slow the pace and take some time out for some plain old fun. You might even enjoy it.

This week finds you focusing on health. With the Sun travelling through your fitness sector, it’s time to stop burning the candle at both ends. Address any health issues that you have ignored for too long and concentrate on improving diet and exercise regimes. Treat your body like a temple, Sagittarius - not a trash can.

After recent dramas, it would be wise to pack a suitcase and take a break from life’s apparent urgencies. Postpone potentially stressful appointments. Everything and everyone can wait, as you let self-pampering take priority. It’s also a week of less-hurried romantic prospects. Enjoy the pleasures of a slower, more tender touch.

Maybe you’re surrounded by bullies, Aquarius. Maybe you’re dealing with sheer stubbornness. Whatever the case, it seems that someone around you is behaving badly. Don’t let them get you down. In any case, you’re clever enough to find a way around their petulance. In doing so, watch those tables turn.

All areas of communication will be affected between now and the 5th of June, including matters related to teaching, healing, or personal and workplace relationships. Beware of travel mix-ups, mail and delivery mishaps or missed appointments of all kinds. Backup your computers and be careful of documents going astray.

During a Mercury retrograde period, some Virgos can become critical, cranky or somewhat suspicious. Instead, use this time to simply chill, and perhaps revive your sense of humour. The pragmatic, material world will take precedence, so hold on to your valuables and assets, and make sure you have something saved for a rainy day.

The Sun asks that you sort out your finances once and for all, so you now have to be totally focused on work and money in order to thrive. The upside: a possible promotion or cash bonus - but stash any extra cash and you may just gain yourself a reprieve. Love brings surprises, with romance possibly being secretive.

Your ruler, Mercury, is out of phase until 5th June and that spells shortterm trouble. Life may become a tad more complex now, so try to simplify your daily plans and projects by avoiding anything that could cause headaches, stress or physical exhaustion. Tackle one thing at a time and don’t make major decisions or purchases.

Every week has its complications but until 5th June, Mercury’s backflip could create even greater delays. Not to worry. If given the chance, feisty Leos like nothing better than to tear up boring schedules. Whether this leads to disappointment depends on your expectations. Someone you considered a potential lover may become a friend instead.

Pisces, you’ve postponed a particular decision long enough. Now, it’s time to do something about it. Sure, it pays to be prepared - and we all know practice makes perfect. The big question is: are you ready to give it a try? You’ll only know by taking action. If tensions do exist, they seem more to do with immediate family.

Mercury backsteps into your sector of finances and other people’s money - so delay crucial work decisions or money matters. Should mishaps and misunderstandings start to create financial meltdowns, take some precautionary measures. Switch up your online passwords and backup important data. Don’t sign any important documents.

This week’s Mercury retrograde signals a time of endings. Perhaps, the things that we hang on to the tightest, could suddenly be taken away. Rather than resist change, Libra, rethink your priorities. Chances are, you have a dormant collection of artefacts and half-baked projects that are ready for the bonfire.

A back-pedalling Mercury suddenly pressures you to eliminate and release anything old, outworn or obsolete. A partnership could be in a ‘do or die’ phase, with an armoury of lethal emotions firing back and forth. Some Scorpios may now seek a deeper meaning to their being. But keep a few kilos of salt handy for the words of false prophets.

With plenty of your zodiac neighbours heading for the hammock, here’s your chance to outrun them. Many Sagittarian transits overrule a lazy Mercury, all vying to give you that extra spark. Indeed, things are going so well that unexpected detours hold the promise of new love or friendship. A soulmate may be closer than you think.

This week, double check dates, times and emails. Why? Because an erratic Mercury causes havoc until early next month. Use this time to go through old files, tidy up correspondence, complete projects and tend to unfinished business. Computers, phones, cars or other electronic objects may experience slow-downs or unexpected failures.

In recent times, you stayed calm and did your best. No-one could possibly have asked for more. This week, you start to make up for lost ground. One hint: work on your presentation. It’s all in the way you tell it and sell it. Even if the occasional hurdle does crop up, know that you’re a stayer who’s in for the win.

Look at the recurring patterns in your life, Pisces and perhaps ask why you often give your power away? You’re so much a people-pleaser but, truly, your priority should be to please yourself. Stop suppressing that very special spirit inside you. You’re now given planetary permission to shine - so do just that.

Guess what? Mercury has turned retrograde again, which means that until 5th June, it’s not the best time to start new ventures, make financial investments or even change jobs. Rather, you should be looking to finish projects and gain a better perspective on life. Use this week to increase self-awareness and inner growth.

JUST FOR LAUGHS

A Lexus mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a LS460 when he spotted a well-known

cardiologist in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his car when the mechanic shouted across the garage, “Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?” The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, “So Doc, look at this engine. I opened its heart, took the valves out, repaired or replaced anything damaged, and then put everything back in, and when I finished, it worked just like new. “So how is it that I make $48,000 a year and you make $1.7M, when you and I are doing basically the same work?” The cardiologist paused, leaned over, and then whispered to the mechanic....... “Try doing it with the engine running.”

Aging: Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. Some people try to turn back their ‘odometers’. Not me. I want people to know why I look this way. I’ve travelled a long way and a lot of the roads were not paved. Ah! Being young is beautiful but being old is comfortable. Lord, keep your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth. May you always have: Love to share, Cash to spare, Tires with air, And friends who care.
