Dear Sir/Madam It gives me great pleasure to send you our new Autumn 2021 catalogue, with over 700 different varieties of bulb to bring colour, scent and beauty to your garden in the spring. We were deeply saddened to hear of the death of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, who served the monarchy and the country so exceptionally well over such a long period of time, and as Royal Warrant holders, we would like to again take this opportunity to convey our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to Her Majesty The Queen and all members of the Royal Family. Another major change to our lives has of course been Brexit. The bureaucracy and paperwork that this has brought with it have proved a nightmare and extraordinarily time consuming, not to say costly! So far we have successfully managed to work our way through it all, and although obtaining stock is much more difficult, we are now getting the hang of it. This, coupled with the enormous rise in gardening interest, means that I would again urge you to order early to avoid disappointment. Even at this early stage, we are already encountering shortages - and indeed in certain instances a complete lack of supply. This season will I am afraid prove extremely difficult in terms of guaranteed availability. Since de Jager was founded in 1868, the company has been championing top quality, top size bulbs, and we continue to stress that the bigger the bulb the better the performance. The large sizes do make an enormous difference, providing bigger flowers, stronger stems and better naturalisation. This is the secret to the success and longevity of the company and why our bulbs feature in so many gardens that are open to the public, where the visitors are treated to the very best of displays. Throughout the pandemic de Jager has been able to operate in a relatively normal manner while strictly adhering to all the government guidelines designed to ensure the safety of all employees and customers. We have thankfully to date been relatively unscathed. The ability to be able to continue our normal business under such trying conditions has been entirely thanks to the wonderful dedication of the company’s loyal staff, many of whom have been with us for many years. Indeed, we have some employees who are the third generation of their family to work at de Jager! As you can imagine I am extremely grateful to them all. The catalogue also features a highly comprehensive offering of over 180 different Tulips and 120 varieties of Daffodil which can be planted in containers and borders, and many can also be naturalised in grassland. They also make wonderful cut flowers, filling the home with brightness after the winter.

As usual the front cover of this catalogue features another fine painting, this time of a wonderful display of Cylamen Coum (pages 24-25) which we have specially commissioned from the up-and-coming botanical artist Egle Kolev Dip S.B.A (Dist).

This past year has been quite extraordinary to say the least. Who would have imagined that we would face such lockdowns and disruption to our normal way of life? Every cloud of course has a silver lining, and one of the few benefits of this awful pandemic is that it has enabled many people to spend - albeit perforce - a much greater amount of time in their gardens. I, for one, have been planning and implementing planting schemes which I never thought I would have time for, and I have to say I am very much looking forward to enjoying the results! What has particularly inspired me is the range of naturalising woodland and wild meadow bulbs. Even a corner of the smallest garden can be enhanced by planting Anemone Nemerosa, Camassias, Chionodoxa, Cyclamen, Fritillaria Meleagris, Galanthus (Snowdrops), Hyacinthoides (True English Bluebells) and naturalising mini Narcissi & Tulips, amongst others. What is more this will be of great benefit to bees, butterflies and many other pollinators at an important stage of their lives.

Charities have been very hard hit over the past 12 months, and we are delighted that we have been able to support two of our favourite ones: Greenfingers www.greenfingerscharity.org.uk and Horatio’s Garden www.horatiosgarden.org.uk. All thanks to the kind and generous QVC customers we recently raised the magnificent sum of £6,000 for Greenfingers, who have so far built 60 children’s gardens at hospices up and down the country. We regularly provide bulbs for the wonderful Horatio’s Garden, who are on track to create their seventh garden at spinal injuries clinics throughout the UK - giving the patients much needed outside space. The benefits of gardens for mental health and well-being cannot be over-emphasised, and we would encourage you to give any help you can to these two most worthwhile charities.

BULBS FOR INDOOR FLOWERING

FORCING BULBS The bulbs on the next two pages are ideal for indoor planting. Once planted the pots need to be put in a cool, dark place, keeping the soil moist. Forcing will take between 12 and 16 weeks or when the shoots are 2’’ to 3’’ high. At this stage the pots should be brought out of cold storage into a cool unheated room. Turn the pots daily in order to keep the stems straight and strong. When the foliage and buds are well developed move the pots to a bright sunny position. This 2nd stage takes between 3 to 4 weeks.

PREPARED CHRISTMAS HYACINTHS

These hyacinths are specially prepared for early forcing and for bowl and pot culture. When potting leave the tip of the bulb above soil level. Hyacinths need approximately 10 to 12 weeks in cold storage. They can also be forced in water sitting the bulb above water level so that the base of the bulb just touches the water, then place in the dark until the shoots are 2’’ to 3’’ high. Despatched from early September onwards when they are fully ready.

MULTIFLOWERING HYACINTHS

Multiflora Hyacinth bulbs are propagated so as to produce clusters of delightfully fragrant small flowers. Each bulb will produce several slender stems on which the delicate bells are loosely set. They can be potted as above and are also ideal for naturalising in the garden.

One of the top ten favourite house-plants. This size produces two stems carrying 3 to 5 blooms. Soak the roots and lower part of the bulb in tepid water for 24 hours. Plant each variety in individual pots or, for a longer flowering time, plant different varieties of bulbs in layers as illustrated above. Plant bulbs 1½ inches apart, larger bulbs at the bottom of the container with the smallest bulbs at the top, leaving 2 inches of soil between each layer. PICTORIAL MEADOWS MIXTURES

These Meadow Mixtures are carefully blended seed mixes of native and non-native hardy species, designed to provide high quality flowering displays. They have been developed following several years of intensive trials at the University of Sheffield. Unlike other mixes that are available, they will flower and provide visual interest over an extremely long period of time (from summer through to late autumn) and are formulated to produce a succession of flowering species. They inject drama into large-scale commercial landscapes and create sparkling, complex and intricate pictures in the very smallest of spaces. They provide a colourful, wildlife-friendly replacement for mown grass; they can be sown formally in beds or to provide colour between shrubs, trees and perennials. Leeds City Council included a meadow mixture in their magnificent Gold Medal winning garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2010, and these mixtures have been used extensively in the Olympic Park. Sow the Annual seed mixes at a rate of 2-3g per square metre in the spring - March, April or May - and they will produce superb colour displays within 8 weeks or so of sowing. The Perennial seed mixes all contain over 20 species of plants, and should be sown at a rate of 2g per square metre (except Purple Haze – 3g per sq. m.) from early autumn to late spring, with October/November being the best for medium to large scale plantings. Once established the meadow can be managed simply with an annual cut in late February. The original Pictorial Meadows mix is illustrated in the main picture opposite (taken at The Eden Project) and produces stunning displays right through until late October/November. Starting out with white, blues, pinks and reds, the tapestry turns to reds, orange and yellow in the autumn. The mix has been carefully balanced for colour and succession of flowering, and components include: Shirley Poppy, Californian Poppy, Cornflower, Fairy Toadflax, Tickseed, Red Orache and Larkspur. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q. Is there any grass seed content? A. There is no grass content to the mixes. Don’t mix with grass as it will kill off the flowers. Q. Can I just scatter the flowers over existing grass to create a meadow effect? A. Unfortunately not - the seeds have to be sown on bare soil. Q. Will the annual mixes self-seed? A. Only some of the species in the annual mixes will. To get the same effect you have to resow each year. Q. Will birds eat the seed ? A. No, they are too small for them to notice. Q. Will the mixes work in Sandy/Chalky/Clay soil ? A. Yes. They will work on all types of soil, but for these mixes, the better the soil the better the result.

Q. Do I need to water the seeds if it doesn’t rain once I’ve sown them? A. For annuals no there is usually enough rain eventually and if you over-water they could rot before they germinate. However, if there is prolonged drought after you have sown then you could try watering once a week. Perennials are more demanding and we recommend irrigation in Spring. Q. Will the mixes work in shady areas? A. Yes, but the mixes do need sunshine at some point during the day. Q. Can I combine the annual and perennial seed mixes? A. We don’t recommend this, as each seed mix is carefully formulated to produce a specific result. Q. How long will the seed keep if I don’t use it all? A. Usually for several years - keep stored in a cool dry place.

PLANTING DEPTH Failures with bulbs are most frequently due to their having been planted too deep or too shallow. A good general rule to follow is to cover the bulb with soil one and a half to twice its own depth, measuring the bulb from the base to the shoulder. Thus a bulb measuring 2 inches from the base to the shoulder should be covered with 3-4 inches of soil. Always unpack bulbs on arrival and leave bags open so air can circulate until planting.

supplies are subject to availability.

CONSERVATION POLICY – Our bulbs and plants are not collected from wild sources, only cultivated stocks are supplied.

The descriptions of the varieties shown in our catalogue are accurate; illustrations are only a likeness due to certain limitations in printing.

Payment & Pricing 5.

The placing of an order constitutes an agreement to purchase on the business terms stated in this catalogue.

Payment is required and will be processed at the time of placing an order. Payment may be made by cheque or any major debit or credit card.
