2017 | 2018 ANNUAL REPORT WELCOME Dear Friends, It is our great pleasure to present you with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s 2017-2018 Annual Report, in which you can read about the many wonderful highlights from the past year. We would like to thank Leonard Slatkin for ten years of remarkable artistic leadership. Together we have changed the way the DSO engages with its community here in southeast Michigan, while also returning to the international stage via our Live from Orchestra Hall webcasts and through touring, capped by our Asia Tour in summer 2017. We were thrilled to honor Leonard and our dear friends and longtime DSO supporters Penny and Harold Blumenstein at our eighth annual Heroes Gala in June, which raised $1.2 million to support our education and community engagement programs. Thank you to all who attended and gave their support in conjunction with this incredible evening. Last March, the 40th annual Classical Roots concert honored the trailblazing tenor George Shirley and the visionary leader Earl Lewis, raising $340,000 to support the DSO’s African-American musician development programs. Our sincere thanks go to all this year’s Classical Roots supporters, led by Stanley and Judy Frankel, J.P. Morgan Chase, and DTE Energy Foundation, as well as to a dedicated steering committee chaired by Therese Peace Agboh and Janice Cosby. New support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation also enabled us to increase our African-American Orchestra Fellowship from one to two musicians in the 2018-2019 season. In October 2017, we announced significant new foundation support led by the William Davidson Foundation, whose $15 million gift will fund the William Davidson Neighborhood Concert Series for five more years and included a $5 million challenge grant to our permanent endowment. They were immediately joined in this challenge by the Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Family Foundation, the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation, and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. We thank them all, and in recognition for outstanding leadership, we proudly named our atrium the William Davidson Atrium. Thank you to all our other supporters, too numerous to mention here, but who are represented throughout these pages. We would also like to thank our Board of Directors as well as our Board of Trustees chaired by Ric Huttenlocher for all they do on behalf of the DSO. Our deep gratitude to our 439 Governing Members, led this past year by outgoing chair James Farber and incoming chair Janice Bernick, whose investment and dedication make all that we do possible. And thanks to our world-class staff and musicians, which have never been stronger. Thank you all for imagining with us a bright future for your Detroit Symphony Orchestra, committed equally to artistic excellence and community impact as the most accessible orchestra on the planet. With appreciation,

Anne Parsons

2017 | 2018 ANNUAL REPORT SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

This season the DSO continued to attract top musical talent to Orchestra Hall. Major artists like Augustin Hadelich, Daniil Trifonov, Giancarlo Guerrero, Hannu Lintu, Karen Gomyo, Louis Lortie, and Seong-Jin Cho all traveled to a resurgent Detroit to perform with our world-class orchestra. LEONARD SLATKIN’S 10TH ANNIVERSARY

WATCH THE DETROIT RED WINGS’ TRIBUTE TO LEONARD SLATKIN

We were thrilled to celebrate Music Director Leonard Slatkin’s tenth and final season in the role before he took on the new title of Music Director Laureate. Guest artists like Olga Kern, JeanEfflam Bavouzet, Michelle and Christina Naughton, and George Li were among those to join Leonard and the DSO during this anniversary season. And while Leonard was unable to conduct what would have been his final three programs as Music Director, he returned to the stage in June to conduct an encore at the Eighth Annual Heroes Gala, where he was honored alongside philanthropists Harold and Penny Blumenstein.

WORLD PREMIERES

WATCH DSO WORLD PREMIERES ON YOUTUBE

It was a banner year for world premieres and performances of contemporary works in Orchestra Hall. For a season-long commissioning project, Leonard asked his composer friends to recommend some of their former students, who wrote concert-opening works that gave audiences a glimpse of a new generation. These talented artists include Conor Brown, Loren Loiacono, Joshua Cerdenia, Steven Bryant, Roshanne Etezady, and Jared Miller. Additionally, the DSO proudly commissioned and presented the world premieres of Christopher Cerrone’s Violin Concerto (with featured soloist Jennifer Koh) and Lebenbom Award winner Britta Byström’s Many, Yet One.

FRENCH FESTIVAL

WATCH CHRISTOPHER CERRONE’S VIOLIN CONCERTO

The annual Winter Music Festival returned, and shifted focus from a specific composer to the music of an entire country: France. The three-week French Festival, sponsored by Varnum LLP, was anchored by six programs in Orchestra Hall conducted by Leonard Slatkin, featuring works like Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, Debussy’s La mer, and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. There were also chamber recitals, a wine tasting, yoga set to live music, a romantic evening of chansons on Valentine’s Day, and other events at The Max and throughout the community to get all of Détroit in on the fun.

PNC POPS SERIES The DSO welcomed PNC as the new title sponsor of its pops series. Some of the season’s most popular programs included Home for the Holidays (a Detroit tradition and regular sellout), Women Rock! (conducted by Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik), the Positively Pops tribute to Arthur Fiedler, and The Music of Harry Potter (so in demand that we added a second show!). THE MUSIC OF HARRY POTTER

PARADISE JAZZ SERIES Teen piano phenom Joey Alexander made his much-anticipated Detroit debut on the Orchestra Hall stage to kick off the Paradise Jazz Series season—which also included performances by Jason Moran, Kenny Barron, and others. After a red-hot concert in Orchestra Hall, The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra strutted across the William Davidson Atrium to play, unannounced, at a Swing Dance Party in The Cube. The season finale—A Night in Brazil, featuring Ivan Lins and a special appearance by Erb Jazz Chair Terence Blanchard—also extended beyond Orchestra Hall, with a post-concert samba party in The Cube and a Carnaval spotlight event for NextGen, the DSO’s young professional membership program. The Paradise Jazz Series was made possible with support from MGM Grand Detroit.

SFJAZZ COLLECTIVE: THE MUSIC OF MILES DAVIS

DSO PRESENTS, @ THE MAX, AND RENTALS Popular events outside of the main DSO series included film concerts like Home Alone and Back to the Future, The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses, and events in the Peter D. and Julie F. Cummings Cube. The Cube continued to showcase diverse programming and serve as a locus of creativity in midtown Detroit, offering 42 events in FY18—up 20% from the previous season. The Max was activated for a total of 340 days of the year, including partnerships with Detroit Public Theatre, the Sphinx Organization, and more, to serve an ever-widening audience.

NEXTGEN PATRONS AT MYSTERIUM

DSO NEXTGEN AND SOUNDCARD NextGen, the DSO’s membership program and leadership corps for young professionals, launched with an exclusive kickoff party at Our/Detroit in August 2017. NextGen members gain access to discounted tickets, and an invitation to shape the future of DSO support by joining the NextGen Committee. More patrons learned about our Soundcard student discount program thanks to Soundcard Sampler Weekends, sponsored by General Motors, where tickets were available for just $5 to students and their companions.

CLASSICAL ROOTS HONOREE GEORGE SHIRLEY

WATCH 40TH ANNIVERSARY CLASSICAL ROOTS VIDEO

Classical Roots celebrated its 40th anniversary in March, with the annual Celebration and Benefit Concert raising nearly $340,000 to support increased opportunities for African-Americans in classical music. This year’s honorees were outgoing Andrew W. Mellon Foundation President Earl Lewis and trailblazing tenor (and Detroiter) George Shirley. The concert, conducted by Joseph Young, included J. Strauss’s Overture to Die Fledermaus, Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4 (featuring rising star Joshua Williams), Undine Smith Moore’s Scenes from the Life of a Martyr (featuring vocalists Janice Chandler-Eteme, Olivia Johnson, and Issachah Savage, plus narration by Shirley), and songs by the 40th Anniversary Celebration Choir, comprising members of the Brazeal Dennard Chorale, the Detroit Choral Society, and choirs from Wayne State University and Detroit School of Arts. As they have every year for the past 40 years, the Brazeal Dennard Chorale opened the concert performing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Thanks to new support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announced at the event, the DSO has been able to increase the number of African-American Orchestra Fellows in the orchestra from one to two. A new addition for the 40th anniversary year was the Classical Roots African-American Composer Residency, an initiative that selected composer Evan Williams to present his work GRIME in a chamber recital performance.

CLASSICAL ROOTS HONOREE EARL LEWIS

HEROES GALA The Eighth Annual Heroes Gala took place in June and honored longtime DSO supporters Harold and Penny Blumenstein, as well as Music Director Leonard Slatkin. The gala raised nearly $1.2 million to support the DSO’s education and community engagement programs, which serve students, teachers, families, and adults across southeast Michigan and around the world through Classroom Edition webcasts. HEROES GALA HONOREE MUSIC DIRECTOR LEONARD SLATKIN

HEROES GALA HONOREES HAROLD & PENNY BLUMENSTEIN

The concert, conducted by former DSO Assistant Conductor and current Music Director of the Louisville Orchestra Teddy Abrams, featured the surprise world premiere of Slatkin’s son Daniel’s In Fields (conducted by the composer and dedicated to his father), appearances by Michel Camilo and Storm Large, and a brief conducting cameo by Slatkin himself, marking his return to the stage since undergoing heart surgery earlier that spring. The event celebrated Slatkin’s artistic leadership as well as the monumental support provided by the Blumensteins—including the Harold and Penny Blumenstein Future Audiences Fund, which subsidized $1 tickets to any student or teacher in Detroit to attend the DSO’s Educational Concert Series.

2017 | 2018 AN NUAL REPORT

ADVANCEMENT HIGHLIGHTS NEW ENDOWMENT SUPPORT In October 2017, the DSO was proud to report new and increased support totaling $18.5 million from four foundations: the William Davidson Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Family Foundation, and the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation. The William Davidson Foundation anchored this support with a $15 million gift that included funding to continue the William Davidson Neighborhood Concert Series for another five years, plus a $5 million challenge to the DSO’s permanent endowment. The Mellon, Erb, and Dresner foundations joined them in this challenge immediately with an additional $3.5 million. At the event, the DSO was proud to name its central, four-story atrium the William Davidson Atrium. In an unprecedented sign of dedication to our communitysupported orchestra, the musicians of the DSO announced a collective $100,000 endowment gift—with contributions from every single musician. Funds from the gift will support ongoing artistic excellence, including high-caliber guest artists in future seasons, digital recordings, commissioning new orchestral music, or creating scholarships for students enrolled in the DSO’s Civic Youth Ensembles. Leonard Slatkin and his wife Cindy McTee also made a generous gift to the DSO endowment, contributing $100,000 to establish the Cindy and Leonard Slatkin Emerging Artists Fund. The initiative will provide support for one up-and-coming artist (a solo musician, conductor, or composer) to perform with the DSO each season. Designed as a challenge gift, Leonard and Cindy were joined in their support by Ann and Norman Katz, Florine Mark, Pat and Hank Nickol, Ruth Rattner, and Jane and Larry Sherman.

POPS SERIES SPONSORED BY PNC BANK A new title sponsorship was inaugurated at the beginning of the season. Thanks to support from PNC Bank, pops programming at the DSO is now presented under the title PNC Pops Series. The DSO and PNC have enjoyed a long partnership going back to the Orchestra Hall restoration efforts of the 1980s, and since 2013 PNC Bank has generously supported the DSO’s Educational Concert Series.

COMMITMENT TO VETERANS The FCA Foundation is helping the DSO reach new communities by subsidizing ticket discounts for veterans, active military members, and their families at select concerts throughout the season. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & EDUCATION #DSOIMPACT

DSO MUSICIANS PERFORMING AT COTS IN DETROIT

The DSO continues the work it’s done on behalf of its Social Progress Initiative, a commitment to leveraging the power of music to improve the quality of life for all people of greater Detroit. Community engagement services include educational partnerships, efforts to increase diversity and inclusion in training ensembles, musician visits to health and wellness centers, and bringing music into our communities.

IN THE COMMUNITY

DSO MUSICIANS AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF MICHIGAN

The William Davidson Neighborhood Concert Series entered its seventh season bolstered by the historic $15 million pledge of support from the William Davidson Foundation announced in October. The DSO returned to seven Metro Detroit venues—in Southfield, Clinton Township, Beverly Hills, West Bloomfield, Plymouth, Bloomfield Hills, and Grosse Pointe—to perform for audiences close to their homes and deepen the orchestra’s connection with fans across southeast Michigan. Select Neighborhood Series concerts also offered an informative talk hosted by conductors and scholars, made possible by a generous grant from the American Orchestras’ Futures Fund supported by the Ann & Gordon Getty Foundation. Fifteen chamber recitals by DSO musicians in and around Detroit also reached audiences outside of Orchestra Hall. These intimate concerts take place in community spaces and often feature fresh or unexpected programming to match the unique settings.

DSO CHAMBER RECITAL IN A FERNDALE CHURCH

For the seventh consecutive year, the DSO performed four free community concerts at venues across metro Detroit to kick off the new season. Presented by DTE Energy Foundation, they reached an estimated 4,000 people at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, Ford Community & Performing Arts Center in Dearborn, Clawson High School, and Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores.

TRAINING ENSEMBLES

WILLIAM DAVIDSON NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERT SERIES

Nearly 50 years ago, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra made a commitment to providing musical training to the young people of southeast Michigan with the founding of the Civic Youth Ensembles (CYE). In 2016, training ensembles grew to encompass adult amateur musicians with the Detroit Community Ensembles.

71 22,500 community members reached through engagement services AMANDA BLAIKIE LEADS MASTER CLASS FOR CYE

Last season saw further growth through the Dresner Foundation Allegro Ensemble. This tuition-free training group for 3rd graders at Duke Ellington Conservatory provides free violins and an opportunity to learn to play them as part of the school’s music curriculum. Students in the Dresner Foundation Allegro Ensemble receive full financial aid to the complete range of CYE, allowing them to pursue music after the school year ends. The ensemble was made possible by a generous grant from the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation and is a key part of the DSO’s efforts to bring greater music instruction in the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD).

DRESNER FOUNDATION ALLEGRO ENSEMBLE

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DETROIT SCHOOLS In addition to CYE, the DSO partners with DPSCD to introduce young people to classical music by bringing orchestra musicians into classrooms through the PNC Grow Up Great program or under its own auspices. The DSO also offers its long-running Educational Concert Series (ECS) to students in Detroit and across the region, either in person at Orchestra Hall or virtually through the Live From Orchestra Hall: Classroom Edition webcasts.

STUDENTS AT AN ECS CONCERT IN ORCHESTRA HALL

Three DPSCD schools participated in the inaugural year of the ECS Partner School Program, made possible by the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Foundation. More than 400 students at three Detroit schools received classroom visits from teaching artists, Professional Development Workshops for teachers, DSO musician visits, and the viewing of Classroom Edition webcasts. The DSO recognized teacher excellence with The Berman Teacher of the Year Award supported by The Mandell and Madeleine Berman Foundation. Two teachers, from Foreign Language Immersion and Cultural Studies and Munger Elementary School, were each awarded $500 to support music education in their school, plus DSO musician classroom visits and free tickets and transportation to an ECS performance.

CLASSROOM EDITION WEBCAST: A SYMPHONY OF SCIENCE

A new partnership between DPSCD, the DSO, DIA, and Michigan Opera Theatre began in 2017 with the creation of the Cultural Passport program for students in grades 3-5. Every DPSCD fourthgrader was able to take a field trip to Orchestra Hall, including the spring ECS concert. The program was so successful that DPSCD expanded it to encompass field trips for all K-8 students to 14 different cultural organizations in 2018-2019.
