RHODODENDRON SPECIES

Few realise that the genus rhododendron includes nearly 1000 species (as found in the wild) and many thousands of hybrids (crosses between either two species or subsequent crossings).

Cross Hills rhododendrons are grown in open field conditions at an altitude of 1800ft (600metres). Growing in an ideal loam soil our plants develop an excellent root system. Cross Hills plants are well known for their good shifting qualities having been hardened by snow and frosts. (See the photos of our magnificent winters on our website!) These ideal conditions are very similar to those of the Himalayas where many rhododendron species first originated.

As a generalisation, species have more interesting foliage than hybrids. Species on the whole, flower earlier in the spring. Mention is frequently made of indumentum and tomentum when describing the foliage. Indumentum is a covering of small hairs on the leaves, usually on the underside. This forms a fur, skin or felt-like layer which can be deep brown, silvery, fawn or white. Tomentum refers to a similar coating on the upper surface of the leaves.

Mid season. 1.2m

This form of augustinii has a more compact growth habit than some of the others. The flowers are possibly a deeper blue too and are found in clusters at the end of the branches. Small leaves, foliage turns bronze in the winter. $44.00

Hose-in-hose flowers have enlarged sepals which are the small leaf-like parts at the base of the flower where it joins the stem. Sometimes you hear them referred to as ‘cup and saucer’ type, with one layer of the flower sitting inside the other.

LIFETIME LABELS, TIES AND STAKES

Our anodized aluminium labels have a proven long life and UV resistance in NZ conditions. For home gardens, parks, nurseries or any situation where durable, non-fade labelling is required.

4 Unique ways to utilise our Lifetime Labels

We’ve previously offered embossed characters on our labels, unfortunately after 20 years of good service our Italianmade machine has kicked the bucket. It has proven very hard to find a suitable replacement embosser.

We will sell our blank labels giving you the opportunity to write your own information on both sides using a durable CRC Solvent-Based Paint Marker Pen.

Label is tied to the branch with a 300mm length copper wire encased in a black UV-resistant PVC coating. The wire is simply twisted around itself, to form a large loop on the branch. Label size: 25mm wide X 114mm long.

The label is fixed to large trees with a 300mm copper wire encased in PVC staple which is inserted into drilled holes. Wind or birds etc. cannot remove the label once the wire has callused into the tree. The wire will not harm the tree.

Product Prices

1. Lifetime Label $ .70 each

2. Lifetime Label $1.00 each + UV-Proof Wire Tie

3. Lifetime Label $1.00 each + UV-Proof Wire Staple

4. Stainless Steel $1.80 each Plain Stake

5. Stainless Steel $2.40 each Footed Stake Stake length 650mm

6. CRC Permanent $7.00 each Paint Marker – Black

All prices include GST Neat and practical. Just slip label on to the coiled end, squeeze closed with pliers and push into soil to the required depth. Ideally suited to young or small plants, perennials etc.

Child-proof footed stakes are set in place by pushing into soil with a spade, withdraw the spade and the high tensile steel foot will spread open to anchor the stake. Will not corrode.
