Dear Friends,
As a family business we always like to promote from within our own team wherever possible and now that the hiatus of Covid is easing, I am delighted to announce several promotions at Coolings this Spring. Gary Carvosso, our Managing Director of the last 16 years, is taking over my role as Chairman. Dwayne Ross, who joined us in 2005, moves from being Retail Director to become Managing Director. Andy Daly, who has been very effective as Shop Manager at our largest site, becomes Head of Retail across all four sites. Finally, Conor Benstead, who joined us just a few days before we went into lockdown, has been promoted to Operations Manager as a result of being able to spot and react effectively to opportunities that presented themselves over the past two years.

I wish them all well in their new roles as an ever-changing world evolves and I start to take on more international affairs within our trade association.

One good thing to come out of the pandemic is that many people ventured out into their gardens in a different frame of mind and actually started to enjoy the experience. In this edition of Cuttings, we focus on the launch of the Coolings Feel Good Gardens - these are aimed at all those new, less experienced gardeners. We hope that the new displays will be aspirational for you and help demonstrate what products/plants to buy to achieve a similar look at home. Each month the gardens will focus on a different feel good/wellbeing theme such as sound, scent, colour or taste, demonstrating how being in your garden can be good for your wellbeing and that of your whole family, as well as being a great place to entertain others. With the Queen’s Jubilee coming up, what could be better than using your garden as a place to celebrate? We look forward to welcoming you on your next visit soon.

April Sound & Scentsation April marks the official start of Spring, but it is also known for its April showers. We’re embracing the sound of water in the Coolings Feel Good Garden this month by introducing a water feature and rain chains. Water features come in all shapes and sizes and can be powered by the sun so there’s no need to worry about electricity connections, utilising the power from the sun is also obviously much kinder on the planet.

Smal l Spaces Growing in containers is great for small spaces and allows you to enjoy the area without making it feel overly crowded. Alpine planters are an especially good choice as they are low maintenance and provide interest and colour all through the year.
Create your own alpine container garden by following these easy steps: 1. Choose your Planter:

An ideal alpine planter is shallower and wider than a normal pot. Our range of Errington Low Bowls are available in a range of colours to add additional interest to your space.You could also repurpose other items to plant in such as our wooden crates, or an old butler sink. Ensure your planter has holes for drainage to keep your alpines looking their best.
Alpines enjoy a free draining soil to grow in so you’ll need plenty of grit, sharp sand and even broken pots or large stones.The sand and grits need to be horticultural grade so there are no impurities like salt which can affect how your plants grow.You will also need a soil based compost, like John Innes No.2, to mix with sand to decrease its water retention. Place the broken pot in first over the drainage holes to stop them from clogging up, then cover with the grit, then the sand, making sure each layer is about 1 inch thick. Fill the rest with the sand/compost mix leaving about 1 inch from the rim.

You have probably heard of ‘no mow May’ where you leave your lawn un-mown for the month. This creates a safe environment for wildlife full of food for pollinators and a haven for insects and a host of other fauna. Not mowing your lawn is easy and if you’d like to take it to the next level, why not give an area over to a wildflower meadow by spreading wildflower seeds. This can be as big or small as your space allows, it is a cheap and effective way of getting a beautiful flower border and having a positive effect on bees, butterflies and birds.
Having water in the garden is great for attracting wildlife such as birds, frogs and dragonflies. Not everyone has room to build a pond but something as simple as an oak barrel can be enough to entice wildlife in. To create the ideal set up you will need a mix of aquatic plants, including marginals and oxygenators. For the finishing touches make sure you leave access for creatures such as frogs and newts to climb up, this can be as easy as using logs stacked against one side.

Wych Cross Garden Centre was established over 50 years ago as a traditional nursery specialising in producing roses. Since joining the Coolings group in 2019 we have reverted back to sand beds rather than an overhead sprinkler watering system, this uses around 30% less water. This system is particularly useful for roses as it reduces the spread of disease by not encouraging anything undesirable to grow on a wet leaf. In addition, it is more effective at keeping the plant moist during dry spells so the plant is not stressed.

Roses are very hungry plants so feeding is vital for ensuring both healthy growth and plenty of flowers. Repeat flowering roses should be fed twice a year; the first feed should take place just as the growing season is starting in late March/early April and the second feed in early July to encourage the second flush. Roses that only flower once only require the first feed.
The main prune should be done in late winter/early spring to create a good structure and to remove any diseased, damaged or dead stems. A light prune or tidy of the rose in late autumn can also help keep roses healthy particularly by collecting and disposing of fallen leaves and putting down a layer of mulch. 3 Watering Ensuring your roses have plenty of water will help to prevent diseases. During the flowering season, established roses should be watered once a week and newly planted roses should be watered every other day. Roses in pots will dry out quicker than those in the ground so will need more attention. How you water is also very important - water the soil not the leaves as this will encourage diseases such as powdery mildew and blackspot to develop.
