New cyclamen plants— how wonderful!

ere you lucky enough to be gifted a cyclamen over the holidays? I happily received three—one red-, one white-, and one pink-flowered. I remember my first cyclamen well: I thought I’d killed it, so I tossed it. I later learned it wasn’t dead, just resting. Since I want you to enjoy these primrose relatives for a long time, I’m devoting this month’s column to their care.

CAROL ANN HARLOS Look at and appreciate your plant. What shape are the leaves? Do you notice a pattern on them? Most likely, the leaves are heart-shaped, indicating a Cyclamen persicum, the most sold cyclamen this time of the year. Take a close look at an individual flower. Exquisite! As I noted above, when your cyclamen stops blooming, it doesn’t mean you’ve killed it—yet. (Did I really write that?) Many plants—mums in autumn, lilies at Easter, and poinsettias at Christmastime—are forced to bloom out of season in greenhouses in order to make them commercially available at certain gifting times. Cyclamen plants are different; they flower when it’s cool (winter) and are dormant (resting) when it’s warm. I keep my cyclamen plants in our dining room window. It is bright and a bit chilly, so they thrive. People frequently put cyclamen plants in warm places, where they begin to yellow in a short time. This is because these cool-loving plants think it’s time to go dormant, leading poor humans to feel like plant killers! After about two months, the leaves will naturally start to yellow. This

does not mean the plant needs water (unless, of course, you’ve never watered it!); it indicates oncoming dormancy. Watering the plant now should be done carefully—if you overwater, you will indeed risk killing the plant, as the roots can rot instead of absorbing the water. I water when the soil dries out down to about an inch. If you’re unsure, stick a finger into the soil to check. Place cyclamen plants in a dark place and, after about six weeks, give the plant a little water and move it to a cool place with bright light. Don’t water again until you begin to see new growth. I like to feed my plants compost tea when they break dormancy—an exciting moment! If you are successful growing cyclamen plants, there will come a time when it’s necessary to repot, usually when the plant is dormant. Carefully remove the plant from the pot and repot in African violet soil mix made of one third parts peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite. Replant at the same depth as the original pot. The new pot should be only about an inch in diameter wider than the original. When repotting, you will notice that cyclamen plants grow from tubers (like tiny round potatoes). If you don’t want bigger plants, make more plants by separating the tubers and repotting each in a smaller pot. Plant the tubers in the same direction they were originally oriented. (This ensures the roots grow downward more easily.) Little cyclamen plants are adorable! I understand that one can grow cyclamen plants from seed, but I haven’t done that…yet! Forgiveness BY JUDITH A. RUCKI

orgiveness can mean something different to everyone. A generally accepted definition is to let go of anger, resentment, and thoughts of revenge. While forgiving may not be easy, it can greatly benefit our health. Think about the saying, “Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” Ridding ourselves of negative feelings can help lower depression, anxiety, and hostility, reduce substance abuse, raise self-esteem, and lead to greater life satisfaction. How can we help ourselves forgive others? A helpful publication, The Book of Forgiving, outlines cycles of revenge and forgiveness. The gist? We can choose to hurt back or heal. If we retaliate, the cycle of harm continues. If we forgive, we break the cycle and can begin to heal by either renewing or releasing the relationship. Choosing to forgive doesn’t mean we forget or condone the hurt inflicted

upon us, and full forgiveness can take some work. Try following these five steps from Harvard Health: • Reflect on the situation. • Put yourself in the other person’s shoes. • Choose to learn from the experience. • Let it go. • Decide where you want to go from here.

What if we need forgiveness from others? Forgiveness works both ways. At times, we may be the ones needing forgiveness. Real Simple author Amy Maclin cites a Fetzer Institute survey that claims sixty-two percent of people crave more forgiveness in their lives. Maclin adds that forgiveness “is good for our hearts…it can reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which may lower the risk of heart attack, improve cholesterol, lessen anxiety, and ease physical pain.” She reminds us that the link between relationships and health grows stronger as we age. Here are some suggestions if you are the one seeking forgiveness: Talk to the offended party. Name the offense, express regret, offer to make amends, and ask for forgiveness. You can also write a letter if talking is difficult. Recognize that it’s not up to you… The person you offended may remain angry. Remember that forgiveness is their choice. After some time passes, you may want to try again. The reason for seeking forgiveness may play a part. Inadvertently hurting someone’s feelings is one thing; repeated cheating or lying on your part may result in an inability to forgive on their part. …and accept the outcome. You may be forgiven, but the person still decides to sever the relationship. This could be because they no longer trust you, are involved in their own emotional struggle, or have decided the relationship isn’t serving them anymore. Whatever the reason, don’t expend energy trying to change

their mind. You’ve done all you can; move forward and trust that if the relationship is meant to endure, it will. What if we need to forgive ourselves? Everyone has a past, and no one is perfect. We may be holding ourselves to impossibly high standards. Just like when we forgive someone else, research shows that self-forgiveness goes a long way toward mental and emotional wellbeing, positive attitude, and healthier relationships. Try the following: Accept responsibility and acknowledge you were wrong. Talking to a trusted friend or seeking a confessor can help alleviate feelings of guilt and shame. Mistakes are learning experiences. Examining what you did wrong and planning for how to do better aids growth. Apologize and try to make it right. If a wrongdoing caused damage to someone else, apologize and seek out ways to make it up to the other person. Exhibit self-love. We all have an inner critic, but we can’t allow negative thoughts to overtake us. Show yourself understanding and compassion. Keep moving forward. The past is the past; you can’t undo it. Accept the consequences of your actions and keep trying to improve. If you’ve accepted what you’ve done and taken action to correct any damage, it’s time to let go and focus on making better choices down the road. Seek professional help. If you can’t forgive yourself, and talking to family or friends isn’t helping, it could be time to see a therapist. Breaking unhealthy behavior patterns is essential to bettering oneself. ow many of your ancestors came to America through Ellis Island? I feel intense pride when I think of my grandparents’ immigration from Southern Italy. While recently researching passenger manifests, I couldn’t help but wonder about my immigrant ancestors’ first moments on American soil. They spoke no English and had survived an ocean crossing in overcrowded conditions. They left all they knew behind in hopes of better lives. 6. What is your occupation? 7. What is your number on the immigration list? When they arrived in New York Harbor, the first thing they saw was 14. Their answers decided their fates and became part of the ship’s manifest, invaluable to present-day research. Records older than seventy-five years are publicly available, and many have been digitized on the free site familysearch.org. In 1903, inspectors began using Form 818 or, “Record of Aliens Held for Special Inquiry,” to document both the process and resolution of detained immigrant cases. These special inquiry records are indexed

and included in New York passenger list databases, so check the last pages of a ship’s record. An excellent guide at jewishgen.org entitled Manifest Markings helps translate codes used by immigrant and medical officers. While approximately one in five were detained to the hospital or Board of Special Inquiry, only two percent of the twelve million immigrants processed at Ellis Island from 1892 to 1954 were deported. Of the many immigrants in my family who arrived, I’ve found that only my grandmother was held for special inquiry (Grandpa took two weeks to pick her up!). My grandmother’s brother was denied entrance for fear he would become a public charge to taxpayers, even though his entire family of eighteen was already settled and gainfully employed. He spent the remainder of his life outside the U.S. When we speak of our immigrant ancestors, we sometimes forget the brave and likely frightening decision they made to take a leap of faith. Whether it was made to flee war, poverty, or a land of no opportunity, the choice was likely not an easy one. I like to remind myself that their journeys made possible the life I live today. Top ten side effects of constipation BY CATHERINE STACK

onstipation affects more than twenty-five percent of the population. Most suffer silently or, worse, don’t realize that they are constipated. Constipation is defined as having fewer than three bowel movements weekly (Mayo Clinic, 2018). Having worked with constipated individuals for more than fifteen years, I cringe at the thought of someone eating two to four times a day and only eliminating three times a week. Constipation can wreak havoc on health. Toxins and excess hormones are excreted in stool, so lack of removal can lead to toxic buildup or hormonal imbalance. Unhealthy bacteria, fungus, and parasites thrive in a constipated colon, making it difficult for beneficial bacteria to dominate and support the immune system. Fecal impaction can lead to distention and excessive straining, both of which can reduce peristaltic function or lead to hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoid sufferers are almost always constipated, whether they know it or not. Here are the top ten side effects of constipation, many so common you might be experiencing them without ever considering infrequent bathroom trips as the root cause: Fatigue. Fermentation of carbohydrates and production of smelly gasses is thought to have a negative impact on mitochondria, our cells’ energy producers. Lack of healthy flora in the gut leads to lessthan-optimal nutrient absorption and impaired detoxification, both of which impact energy levels and cause fatigue. Weight gain. Buildup of excess feces adds pounds to the scale. Weight gain has been linked to imbalances of intestinal flora and hormones. Estrogen excess built up in unevacuated stool can also contribute to a growing waistline. Skin issues. Aestheticians are 26

now paying attention the idea that beauty begins in the gut. Acne and breakouts often result from toxins being reabsorbed by the colon, then entering the bloodstream rather than leaving the body. These toxins attempt to leave the body via the skin, the largest organ of detoxification. A study in Russia showed that fifty-four percent of individuals suffering from acne vulgaris had significantly altered gut flora. Anxiety and depression. Mood and anxiety disorders have long been associated with constipation and other gastrointestinal disorders. And while constipation is often thought to be a symptom, recent neuroscientific research has begun to show the importance of intestinal flora in the development of imbalances in the brain. Simply stated, a constipated colon means a constipated brain/mood. SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth). This potentially debilitating gut issue is finally being more widely recognized. SIBO is defined as an increased number and/ or abnormal type of bacteria in the small intestine. While bacteria are normally found in huge numbers in the large intestine, they don’t belong in the small intestine. Constipation is one of the top causes of SIBO and is thought to be responsible for up to eighty percent of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) cases. Brittle nails and thinning hair.

These may not be as notable as some of the other symptoms, but they’re not fun. Nutrient absorption is a must when it comes to hair and nails, and SIBO sufferers or those with constipated colons do not adequately absorb nutrients. Weakened immunity. Hundreds of studies demonstrate that intestinal flora, i.e. healthy bacteria, is responsible for much of the body’s immune response. Constipation is often associated with pathogen overgrowth—unhealthy bacteria, fungus, and parasitic types— and lack of healthy bacteria. The toxic buildup and inflammation associated with constipation can impair the immune system and leave the body vulnerable to infections. Increased risk for hemorrhoids, rectal prolapse, and anal fissures. Constipation can contribute to or cause issues that lead to unpleasant surgical procedures. Hard stools and increased intraabdominal pressure add extra pressure to veins around the anus and increase risk of hemorrhoids. The connective tissue around the anus can also weaken causing the rectum to protrude through the anus, a condition called rectal prolapse. Additionally, passing hard or large stools can cause anal fissures—small tears—that are painful and difficult to heal. Fecal impaction. Often mistakenly described as diarrhea,

fecal impaction is an extreme version of constipation that obstructs the colon, allowing only liquid stool to pass. This is a serious issue that may lead to bowel perforation or necrosis (cell death). While having a bowel movement three times per week might keep you out of harm’s way, daily movements pave the way for optimal health.
