Show Off Your Figs and "This year Harvest"

Bourjassotte Grise is ridiculously good and ripens in/ ground without a headstart in decent quantities here in Seattle.

The crows go crazy for this one even through all my bird netting.
I think I’ve found my Black Madeira equivalent that will ripen here — time to get rid of all other trees!
jk of course!

Bourjassotte Grise has been consistently good for me in NC also. A lot less finicky and weather-sensitive than most other late figs.

My most productive fig this year is Makedonia Dark. I believe it is a Mt. Etna type fig. I have two plants, one in ground and one in a high tunnel both were started from cuttings from bill at off the beaten path Nursery. In ground did way better.

First Fig to ripen this year was RDB end of August and it is also very productive

Third productive fig is Malta Black.

Taste wise I will rate them as RDB then Malta Black then Makedonia Dark.

This little guy was guarding the last of my

Hi Nadeem,
Given you are in zone 7 and I’m in zone 8a, would you think that these varieties would ripen a main crop here. This year was the first year that we had our Black Jack fig actually ripen some of its main crop. We always get a nice Breba crop but my 20 year old tree could never ripen before winter sets in. This year for some reason it has ripened some fruits surprisingly.

I am top working a Black Mission tree with early ripening varieties and looking for those that produce early crops.
Please advise

Post you have quoted about three year old and I am no longer growing those verities because I do not have time and also settled on the few figs I will grow in ground. Your best bet is to find a member in your area and copy what they are growing successfully. I have four figs in ground and extremely happy with three and fourth one l loved everything but issue is splitting which I do not like it.
Salem Dark , Hardy Chicago , Malta Black and Carini ( Carini is the one which splits ) . First two are six year old and did not get any protection for last two year. Malta Black three year old and Carini is three or four year old no protection at all. I have harvested over 2000 figs from these plants and still holding decent amount .
For figs grafting I have not done any so can not comment. Let me know if you have any further question from me .

I root grafted a ‘Desert King’ in late winter. It took nicely.

First ripe figs about a week + ago here. The bigger ones are ‘Smith’ (tasty, thanks Joe!) and the little ones are an old legacy fig Ive been growing for a decade or more, maybe ‘English Brown Turkey’. I had a lone ‘Ronde de Bordeaux’ a few weeks back but it was decimated by SWD by the time I noticed it. Its my first year with a bunch of new fig varieties. At least I know now that some of these are viable in the high tunnel.

They are all still in pots. Im planning to plant several in the ground and cover them for winter. Hopefully I didn’t wait too long!

Wow! Your dried figs look like candy. Store-bought, even good Turkish ones, don’t even look as good as yours. I hope I get enough figs next season to be able to dry some.

@disc4tw … if I dont bag mine… yellow jackets, wasp, hornets, and SWD can be a problem. I had a young coon that got a few despite the bags earlier this fall… but i trapped him… he is a goner.
