Mellieħa is a fairly large town located in the northern region of Malta.  With a population of around 10,000 permanent inhabitants, Mellieħa is a well-known tourist resort and very popular due to its sandy beaches and relatively unspoilt surrounding natural environment. Mellieha is everyone’s favourite destination for the balmy summer months with people streaming in their thousands to beaches such as Għadira and Golden Bay. With many good restaurants, pubs, good hotels and supermarkets Mellieha has it all.

The actual town overlooks Mellieħa Bay and especially Għadira Bay which is renowned for being the largest sandy beach in the entire country. The port of Ċirkewwa is a favourite amongst the scuba community as it is a dream diving site which includes the wrecks of the MV Rozi and a P29 patrol boat to name but two. The town’s name comes from the word used for describing salt and refers to the ancient Punic-Roman salt pans which once existed here and the site of the salt pans is now included in the Għadira Nature Reserve.

Mellieha’s first inhabitants date from around 3000 BC during the time of the Neolithic period. Notable megalithic remains have been found, such as the temple of Għajn Żejtuna and several caves and tombs which contained tools and pottery fragments. Evidence of troglodytes living in the area’s surrounding caves continued during Byzantine times but are reported to have been abandoned in the early medieval period.

Mellieha is known for its laid-back attitude towards life and it is a firm favourite of many retirees and UK Expats. The international airport is about one hour’s drive and with major roads in and around Mellieha, commuting to Sliema, Valletta and the rest of Malta and the Gozo ferry at Cirkewwa is a breeze.

Nightlife in the North of Malta
