The Minardi M188 designed by Giacomo Caliri and Aldo Costa. In 1988, ahead of the ban in turbo engines for the 1989 season, Minardi changed their engine from the Motori Moderni V6 turbo to the naturally cooled 3500 cc Ford Cosworth DFZ V8. The car had a very short wheel base of 2670 mm, even if aided by a torsion bar suspension (a solution that would be taken up in F1 only 10 years later) the M188 did not perform and was badly suited to the regular road surfaces. The drivers’ duo of the team consisted of Spanish pilots Adrian Campos, who drove for Minardi for the second year, and rookie Luis Perez-Sala. Campos was dismissed after the fifth round of the season due to poor performance and he was replaced by Pierluigi Martini, who previously raced for the team in 1985 and then moved down to International Formula 3000 in 1986. However, the car recorded eleven retirements, seven failures to qualify and one failure to classify. With just one point scored by Martini’s 6th place at Detroit, the year was far from a success.
