Fig - Black Mission

Black Mission figs are often referred to as one of the best varieties in the world. They have a rich and very sweet flavor, accompanied by a delightful hint of berry, with a texture similar to a berry jam. Whether enjoyed fresh or dried, the fruit maintains its deliciousness. The figs exhibit a distinctive appearance with purplish-black skin and strawberry-colored flesh. They are self-fertile, and trees yield two crops annually—a lighter breba crop in summer, and a larger autumn crop. Minimal fruit splitting and a tight eye contribute to low spoilage rates. Suitable for both coastal and inland regions, the Black Mission fig tree is adaptable. Additionally, it thrives as a container plant, making it a wonderful choice for those with limited space or container gardening preferences.

At our nursery, we've been cultivating various fig tree varieties in 50L pots, and through our observations, the Black Mission has emerged as the standout performer in terms of fruit production. Interestingly, when left unprotected, both the Black Mission and the Variegated fig trees seem to have less or no fruit eaten by birds compared to other varieties. 

Plant the Black Mission fig tree in a sunny and sheltered location, shielded from cold and drying winds. Though fig trees grow well in most soils, optimal growth is achieved in well-drained, fertile, and humus-rich soil. Figs love a lot of water in the warmer months and produce juicier fruit if the soil is kept moist. This can be achieved easily by mulching around the base of the tree. Prune after fruiting to control the size and shape of the tree.
