Nepeta Trial Report 2018–2021 RHS Registered Charity No: 222879/SC038262

The Award of Garden Merit The Royal Horticultural Society trials a wide range of ornamental and edible garden plants to test their performance. The best may receive a prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM). Plant trials provide the opportunity for multiple selections of the same plant to be grown side by side for the purpose of comparison. The AGM is intended to help gardeners select plants that have good all-round garden value, and is only awarded to plants that are: • Excellent for ordinary use in appropriate conditions • Available • Of good constitution • Essentially stable in form and colour • Reasonably resistant to pests and diseases The plants may be grown from seed and/or vegetative material as appropriate, and are submitted by nurseries, individuals and breeders. Visitors to RHS Garden Wisley can view ongoing plant trials in the Trials Garden. Trials can also be seen in the dedicated beds in The Old Frameyard at RHS Garden Bridgewater. Individual trials are sometimes held at the other RHS Gardens as well as other gardens and nurseries across the UK. Plants of all kinds, including fruit and vegetables, may be considered for the AGM. Currently, more than 7,500 plants have an AGM, with new awards made each year. Awards are made following assessment by a forum of experts, including nursery owners, specialist growers and horticulturists, all appointed by the RHS. The trial results are used to inform the forums’ decision to award plants the AGM status. Each assessment is then ratified by the relevant RHS Plant Committee. RHS awards can also be given by Roundtable assessment. An award is given when a forum of horticultural experts meets to debate the characteristics and garden performance of plants that the RHS is unable to trial in one of the RHS Gardens or another location. To ensure consistent standards are maintained, the AGM is subject to regular review to make sure that every plant still merits its place on the list. Since 2013, reviews have been conducted by each RHS Plant Committee on a rolling basis. RHS Horticultural Database and Herbarium RHS Plant Trials provide an important record for RHS research into cultivated plants and their names, and data is stored on the RHS Horticultural Database. Trials are also an important source of material for the Herbarium at Wisley. Its primary focus is to acquire and maintain reference material of plants in cultivation. Buying plants with the AGM It is easy to find and buy AGM plants: • Search using the RHS ‘Find a Plant’ feature on rhs.org.uk/plants, using the AGM Plant Search • Download a list at rhs.org.uk/agmlists • Check the latest edition of the RHS Plant Finder book, available to buy at rhsshop.co.uk • Look out for the AGM logo the next time you are in a garden centre or nursery All images © RHS / Nicola Stockton, unless otherwise indicated

Nepeta Trial 2018–2021 1 Introduction to Nepeta Nepeta, or catmint, a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae), is a clump-forming plant with erect stems and aromatic, grey-green leaves. There are over 200 species of perennials and annuals. Small lavender, mauve-blue to pink-blue or white flowers are borne on multiple racemes among the soft foliage throughout summer. Nepeta govaniana produces delicate lemon-yellow flowers. Most need well-drained soil in full sun. Some prefer moist soil and partial shade. The plants are highly attractive to bees and other insects, so are great for pollinators. Trial location The trial was located on the Portsmouth Trials Field at RHS Garden Wisley. Objectives The objectives of the trial were to assess a range of cultivars and to recommend the Award of Garden Merit to outstanding cultivars for garden use. Judging The Nepeta Trial Assessment Forum viewed the trial regularly in 2018, 2019, and 2021. No assessments took place during 2020 due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Members of the assessment forum were: L Russell (joint chair), F Garrett (joint chair), V Bourne, S Edney, J Fielding, G Gough, F Rasch, F Reddaway, S Roe and D Smith. The forum assessed the plants using the following judging criteria: • Overall impact • Habit and vigour • Length of flowering period • Quality of flower – colour, shape, proportions • Quality of foliage • Proportion of flower to foliage • Resistance to weather • Susceptibility to pest and disease • Ease of cultivation • Persistence and reliability

2 Nepeta Trial 2018–2021 Entries There were 123 entries in the trial, submitted by various companies and individuals in the UK. Fi Reddaway, Plant Heritage National Collection Holder, Devon, submitted many of the plants. A full list is provided on pages 17–18. Cultivation Most of the trial plants were supplied as rooted cuttings, in 50 cell trays in July 2016. Extra cuttings were also provided by Fergus Garrett of Great Dixter Garden, East Sussex. The young plants were pinched out after rooting and potted on into 1 litre containers and overwintered under cold glass at RHS Garden Wisley. In preparing the trial bed a Caliente mustard (Brassica juncea) crop was grown, rotavated into the soil and covered with plastic in April 2017. This acted as a green manure and bio-fumigante. Trial entries were planted and puddled in during late May 2017. A few Nepeta types prefer moisture and shade rather than full sun, so we tried to accommodate this as much as possible in the planting plan, within the limitations of the site. Some additional entries, sourced in the trade, were planted in autumn 2017. Irrigation was provided every two to three days during dry hot weather, especially important for the nuda, cyanea (syn. kubanica) and subsessilis types which generally need more moisture. Plants were cut back by half to reduce top growth in early June 2017. Plants were mulched with Strulch during late June 2017. In early December 2017 all plants were cut back by one third. In mid-March 2018 all entries were sheared back to new growth. A fertiliser (30g/m2 of sulphate of ammonia, 25g/m2 of sulphate of potash) was applied in April 2018, after which no further fertiliser was used during the duration of the trial. During 2019 pruning regimes were varied: one plant was cut down to the base after flowering, one plant was lightly deadheaded to the base of the flowering stem, the third plant left unpruned. For all nuda types, one plant was cut to the base after flowering, two plants were left unpruned for seed heads. For cyanea (syn. kubanica) types, no summer pruning was carried out as they will not re-flower. Pruning was simplified for 2021: one plant lightly deadheaded to the base of the flowering stem after flowering. All nuda types were left unpruned. Some entries did not seem to have benefited from pruning or cutting back in terms of second flush, the three options having relatively similar characteristics. Racemosas overall performed well in late season when cut back in early to mid-July. We found that due to the rapid rates of regrowth for racemosa and fassenii types it was simpler to prune these by cutting back to the base rather than deadheading. Some Nepeta types, such as nuda and kubanica, can be grown for seedhead interest and should not be cut down early. Spring weather conditions in 2021: There were several frosts in April 2021, which was the coldest in the UK since 1922. At Wisley, we experienced an unprecedented 16 air frosts (monthly average is 3) and 25 ground frosts (monthly average is 11) in the month. The mean minimum temperature was 0.5°C, the kind of temperature that would be more typical of January. Wisley’s long-term mean minimum temperature for April is 4.7°C. The lowest minimum temperature was -3.6°C on the 7th April and the lowest grass temperature was -11.3°C on the same day. The maximum temperatures were also below average, with the monthly average at 12.3°C (longterm average 14.6°C).

Nepeta Trial 2018–2021 3 AGM Nepeta The following are the plants that fulfilled the Award of Garden Merit criteria during the trial. Descriptions have been largely based on RHS Find a Plant, where available (rhs.org.uk/plants). RHS hardiness ratings To help gardeners determine which plants may be hardy in their locality the RHS hardiness rating scheme outlined below has been devised as a general guide to growing conditions. Temperatures given are minimum winter temperatures. Hardiness ratings are as follows: H1a tropical: heated greenhouse (warmer than 15°C) H1b subtropical: heated greenhouse (10°C to 15°C) H1c warm temperate: heated greenhouse (5°C to 10°C) H2 tender: cool or frost-free greenhouse (1°C to 5°C) H3 half hardy: unheated greenhouse or mild winter (-5°C to 1°C) H4 hardy: average winter (-10°C to -5°C) H5 hardy: cold winter (-15°C to -10°C) H6 hardy: very cold winter (-20°C to -15°C) H7 very hardy (colder than -20°C) Rescinded, reconfirmed and retained When an existing AGM plant is included in an RHS Plant Trial or Roundtable, it is assessed and voted on like any other plant, to make sure it still merits its place on the AGM list. If the decision is that it is no longer worthy of the AGM, the award is rescinded and the plant is removed from the AGM list. Rescinded plants may no longer be displayed or sold with the AGM trophy symbol on the label. If the decision is that it is still AGM-worthy the award is reconfirmed. A plant may be reconfirmed multiple times, for instance after separate trials a few years apart. The official award date is still the original date, however. So if the award was made in 2005 and reconfirmed in 2010 and 2014, the award date remains as 2005. On some rare occasions there may be insufficient votes either to rescind or to reconfirm the award. This may happen if the outcome of the trial is inconclusive for example. In such cases, the award is retained. This means its status is exactly the same as before the assessment and is not a reflection on the quality of the plant.
