Walls of Capmany

The conserved remains of the old walled enclosure of the town of Capmany are located in the town centre, at the south-eastern end of the town’s old quarter. Three rectangular towers, the fortification of the apse of the church and some sections of the wall are preserved. Near the apse, integrated into the façade of one of the current houses, are the remains of one of the old access portals to the town, now transformed considerably. At the top there is a machicolation in good condition. It seems that the wall was built mainly during the 14th and 15th centuries, although on top of earlier remains, probably from the 12th and 13th centuries. It is at this time that the Clusa family were barons of the village replacing the Capmanys; however, it is thought that it was a change of name rather than family, since the last of the Capmany family was also a Lord of Clusa Castle, in Vallespir.
