In plants, albinism is characterised by partial or complete loss of chlorophyll pigments and incomplete differentiation of chloroplast membranes. Albinism in plants interferes with photosynthesis, which can reduce survivability. Some plant variations may have white flowers or other parts. However, these plants are not totally devoid of chlorophyll. Terms associated with this phenomenon are “hypochromia” and “albiflora”.
The primary function of pigments in plants is photosynthesis, which uses the green pigment chlorophyll along with several red and yellow pigments including porphyrins, carotenoids, anthocyanins and betalains.
Paphiopedilum venustum var. measuresianum
Described: Wallich ex Sims in Curtis’s Botanical Magazine, 47, t. 2129 (1820)
Transferred: Pfitzer in Pringsheim, Jahrbcher fur wissenschaftliche Botanik, 19:163 (1888)
Etymology: Derived from the name of Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty; named for the beauty of the flower.
Leaves: 4-5, 10-25 cm long, 3-6 cm wide, above mottled dark green and grey-green, below purple-spotted, basal margins ciliate
Inflorescence: 1- (rarely 2-) flowered, 10-23 cm long, purple, shortly pubescent
Bloom: 8-9 cm wide, extremely variable
Elevation: 60-1350 m
Peak Flowering in the Wild: January-March
Ecology: grows in a variety of habitats, sometimes in jungle undergrowth or bamboo thickets at the base of cliffs, sometimes in tree crotches
Paphiopedilum venustum was discovered in 1816 by WALLICH in Banglades. The plants were introduced to Europe from the Botanic Garden at Calcutta by the Britisch Company of WHITLEY, BRAMES and MILLNE. Paphiopedilum venustum is with a span of 45 cm . The single leaves are up to 22 cm long and 4 to 5 cm broad. The inflorescence is 15 to 20 cm high. Paphiopedilum venustum var. measuresianum is albino forms of the species. The synthesis of the reddisch pigments are blocked genetically. The flower, therefore, exhibits only white, yellow and green .
Paphiopedilum venustum is an easy to grow species. Flowering period : February – April. resting period: November through December

Paphiopedilum emersonii album
Described: Koopowitz & Cribb in The Orchid Advocate, 12(3): 84-86 (1986)
History: The details of the discovery of this species are unclear. Among the first plants to appear in cultivation were a batch exported from China through Honk Kong to Japan and the USA. Also, plants were brought to Europe by Henry Azadehdel. So far, I haven’t found any detailed information on the timing of all the events surrounding this species’ introduction.

Paphiopedilum armeniacum forma markii
Described: S. C. Chen & Liu in Acta Botanica Yunnanica, 4(2): 163 (1982)
History: This species was described from plants collected by A.L. Zhang in 1979 in Bijiang, Yunnan Province, China. Initially, Cribb (Cribb & Tang 1983) raised the possibility that Paph. armeniacum may be a color variant of Paph. delenatii. As more plants became available, Cribb and other taxonomists realized Paph. armeniacum warranted species status.
Paph. armeniacum entered the horticultural trade in large numbers only a few years later. It soon gained a number of awards from orchid societies around the world, including 7 FCCs from the AOS in 4 years. This species has since become common in cultivation and is being artificially propagated. Large numbers of wild-collected plants are also still illegally entering the horticultural trade.
Given the showiness of this species, it is surprising that it remained undescribed for so long.
Etymology: Derived from the name of the apricot tree, Prunus armeniaca (So named because of its supposed origin of Armenia. The fruit trees actually originated from northeastern China). This species was named for the erroneously described apricot color of its flowers. All known examples are yellow.
Synonyms: none
Varieties & Forms:
Paphiopedilum armeniacum fma. markii (Gruss in Die Orchidee, 48(5): 215-216 (1997)) Braem, Baker & Baker in The Genus Paphiopedilum, 1: 69 (1997) – albino form

Distribution: found only in the Nu Shan between the Salween and Mekong Rivers and the Gaoligong Shan west of the Salween.
Elevation: 1350-2050 m
Peak Flowering in the Wild: late March-early May
Mean Temperature Range: 8-20°C
Light: moderate shade
Medium: shallow, well-drained soil, calcareous, pH 7.48-7.9
Paphiopedilum micranthum glanzeanum
Described: Tang & Wang in Acta Phytotaxinomica Sinica, 1: 56 (1951)
Etymology: Derived from the Greek mikrotes, meaning smallness and anthos, meaning flower; named for the erroneusly described small size of the bloom. The description was probably based on a dissected bud.
Varieties & Forms: Fowlie (1993) formally described 3 micranthum ‘races’ as var. eburneum, var. extendatum, & var. marginatum. None of these three probably deserve formal recognition, as the characteristics upon which they are segregated are quite variable and fall within the range of the typical Paph. micranthum. The form that does seem to warrant formal recognition is the albino:
Paphiopedilum micranthum fma. glanzeanum (Gruss et Roeth, in Die Orchidee, Beiheft 2: 16-24 (1994)) Gruss et Roeth in Caesiana 12: 60 (1999)
