Brilliant all-rounders. Crug Farm Plants. The internet has transformed our shopping habits. Val Bourne picks the best online companies Top 20 Mail-order nurseries TELEGRAPH Andrea Jones writes: Their plant list makes jawdropping reading for novice and experienced horticulturists alike. ENGLISH GARDEN Stephen Lacey writes: I went into the garden with an umbrella squeezing and ducking through foliage as lush as a wooded Asian Valley- all wonderful stuff TELEGRAPH

It is the time of autumn gales again as I write the epilogue to 2009, a brilliant year for the nursery I must confess, especially as you our customers are learning that it is far better to plant in the autumn. As it was last year our extending into offering bare-rooted field grown plants has widened our scope. This combined with customers arranging appointments during the summer to tag plants for lifting in the dormant months has given new impetus to our sales. Undeniably the quality mailorder service we are providing is also paying off, therefore Sue and I would like to thank and congratulate our staff for their achievements in Oh yes, our customers as well, must not forget a special thank you for supporting us. Alas still no collecting this season, bar a few on our visit to the Azores. At least it is forcing us to concentrate our efforts on the collections that we still have undeveloped, that will take several more years along with some skilful propagation. But we are hopeful in getting back into the field for next year. The year started on a high note with our first RHS show at Vincent Square, soon followed by an exceptionally good spring. With some blistering heat by mid summer followed on by record high winds and dull skies until a short Indian summer regained our spirits in time for the visit by The RHS Woody Committee in early October. As always all the details of our opening hours are on the back cover of this list as well as our events. For those of our customers who are unable to visit the nursery we are offering an online shopping experience, with deliveries throughout the UK and Europe, from Where there are search facilities by many criteria (i.e. colour), as well as by plant name, while indicating availability, pot sizes and prices. Our carrier, City Link offer an overnight fragile service, which should have your plants delivered in fresh condition before 5.30pm the following day to dispatch (UK).We have specially made boxes in 3 sizes giving us the option of dispatching plants from 30cm (1ft) to 295cm (10ft) tall. Our carriage charges are by the box, (volume not weight) hence please consider ordering enough plants to fill a box, rather than one plant as the carriage charge would be the same.there is no minimum charge for the plants purchased. For additional queries on plant availability etc contact Sue at mailorder@crug-farm.co.uk. We try our best to reply to any queries, a brief can be the surest way of a prompt reply. For any other information visit our nursery website via where there is additional information on our events, accommodation and some seasonal plantings. 1

Please note the lay-out of the following list avoiding repetition of collected plants, (etc signifying more collections available) the full list and descriptions are on our mailorder web-site where space is unlimited. Here there are not only descriptions of all of our plants, but photographs of most as well, this information is also accessible on the computer in our sales-area. We should forewarn our customers that as the season progresses many of our lines will be out of stock. Conversely new lines highlighted bold on this list, will only be offered/available after we re-open our on-site sales in the spring (13th March in 2010). Please note that some of the plants are ordinarily only available bare rooted indicates those plants. Collector s References These combination of initials and numbers are accession numbers that are assigned to collections we and others gather from wild populations from all over the world. These are assigned to each collection as they are made to enable interested parties to track their origins. The list of initials below are those assigned to our own collections as well as a few other collectors we introduce plants from. 33 Some notes on our 2010 introductions :- Woodies including some climbers primarily from our own wild seed collections Starting with Acer, we have identified a couple of interesting collections from northern Vietnam. A. fabri WWJ11614 is known although very difficult to track down, bearing simple lance-shaped evergreen leaves that emerge in shades of pink and yellow, maturing to dark glossy green. A somewhat similar species which we have also found in that area also only forms a small tree or large shrub, A. laevigatum BSWJ11684, has leaves glossy on their upper surface held on shorter petioles. A. oblongum KWJ12232 is an old friend which we are offering as a replacement collection from a shrubby plant we found while on a new (to us) trail through the Hoang Lien Mountains. Unmistakable with again simple, but oblong paler glossy leaves almost white below complemented by a wonderful crop of fat large winged seed. It was only last year that I finally identified A. mono v. marmoratum f. dissectum BSWJ8914, not surprised with that string of names.all the same they are one of the most colourful maples bearing good yellows through to deep reds by autumn. We are also able to offer fresh collections of the Taiwanese snakebark species of A. morrisonensis,a. kawakamii and the flamboyant A. serrulatum a species with colourful new growth, but retained for much longer almost until the autumnal colouration phases in. Marsdenia formosana CWJ12354 was one of the first collections on my return to Taiwan in 2007, this time with Finlay Colley and Dan Hinkley. The distinct large seed capsules were dangling over the sodden mountain road where the twinning stems with large glossy leaves had grown into the canopy of a Lagerstroemia. Maesa japonica CWJ12371 is a scandent species we found in the mountains of the western side of Taiwan, with its evergreen branches heavily laden with masses of small pink fruit. Similar in being admired for its fruit is Callicarpa aff. tikusikensis BSWJ7127, this time from the north of the island, somewhat more downy and more persistent in foliage that C. formosana. Vaccinium dunalianum v. caudatifolium BSWJ6816 was also collected that year, at the time we were accompanied by Dan on the notoriously soggy Taipingshan. Where the exceptionally thick glossy leaves of this blueberry were a wonderful foil for the blue fruit. Trochodendron aralioides from Taiwan has always been popular here differing substantially from its Japanese counterpart by its larger glossy leaves and faster growth. In that respect my collection CWJ12357 should not differ from our previous collections, apart from its apple green colourations.also from my 2007 sortie are two collections of Stachyurus sigeyosii from selected plants with longer inflorescences growing at a higher elevation than previous finds. Cotoneaster hualiensis BSWJ3143 is named after the county we discovered it in, growing at the base of shady cliffs on a long abandoned logging trail the Japanese carved into the forests in the high mountains of north-eastern Taiwan. Where it formed a small deciduous tree bearing almost rounded sizeable glossy leaves with conspicuously embossed venation, embellished with clusters of large bright red fruit by late summer. We also found Euonymus 31

spraguei on this trail, but only successfully germinated seed from the 2007 expedition. This is a lax evergreen shrub in juvenility, maturing to larger elliptic leaves on slender green stems to 2m tall bearing panicles of curious rounded fruiting capsules covered in curved spines. Another new species E. theaefolius GWJ9377 was a collection from the Darjeeling area of northern India, where it formed neat shrubs bearing Camellia-like foliage with pink capsules holding the orange aril covered seed all held on long slender stalks. This area it so happens is the epicentre of distribution of the fabled Hydrangea aspera ssp. robustum. We have seen all sorts offered as this in a desperate attempt to fill the vacuum, small wonder as it is worthy of its space on foliage alone, boasting some of the largest leaves of the genus, held on long red petioles. Flowering a little earlier for us in cultivation, thankfully as it only starts in October in the wild. Hence the difficulty in collecting seed. The huge inflorescences are a pastel colour in that area contrasting with the bright blues we discovered in a tiny disjunct population in northern Vietnam (WWJ11888).The hydrangeas of this botanically rich area of Vietnam are fascinating, keeping me amused for hours. I once stumbled across a small shrub in a heavily degraded and grazed boggy forest with all purple foliage. While contemplating our retirement plans the resulting cuttings were growing in our quarantine unit here at Crûg. H lingii (I later ascertained) is capable of this ornamental attribute, but not to any great extent in North Wales, we were initially disappointed with its floral display as well, there were no sterile florets. But as it matures it is most certainly appealing neither brash nor too subtle to be noticed. Other closely related species are emerging (from the H. indochinensis complex) H. kwangsiensis BSWJ11717 is one such collection from close to the border with China, with blue veined leaves more reminiscent of Dichroa, but with strong blue ornate lace-caps (in acid soils). Blue is the preferred colour of our collection of H. serrata BSWJ6241a from southern Japan, appropriately named at the end of this list.the small white flowering H. serrata ssp. angustata has at last been identified, while other collections from Japan are being recognised. H. grossiserrata is one I have been scratching my head over for years. A small aptly named species we collected from medium altitudes on Yakushima with an affinity to H. scandens ssp. liukiuensis which we also find there at a lower altitude, this latter species closer to H. luteo-venusta. The climbing species we find there known as H. yakushimensis by the Japanese, is also categorised as variety cordifolia of H. anomala ssp. petiolaris. Before leaving Japan we are adding to our cultivars of the ever popular H. involucrata, Sterilis, is our latest, with sterile heads to match some H. arborea. We have a re-identification of H. quelpartensis BSWJ 4400, it in not that species but var. tiliifolia from the island of Ullüngdõ (mix up). Moving on smartly to their cousins, Deutzia crenata v. nakaiana BSWJ11184 takes us out of the frying pan and into the fire.this is our first collection of this variety with smaller but more numerous flowers, BSWJ8879 is moved to var. heterotricha. If you consider my taxonomic skills woeful, listen on... D. scabra BSWJ11127 will be the first correctly named introduction of this species into British horticulture since its mix-up in 1877.What we have been growing under that name is D. crenata. Obvious once it has been pointed out. 32

It goes on, D. coreana BSWJ8588 is now considered to be D. prunifolia (the illustration was upside-down in the Flora, honest). No mistaking D. paniculata, also from Korea with its distinct outlandish panicles of small white flowers. Before we leave the hydrangea family I must mention Philadelphus myrtoidea BSWJ10436, astonishing when we found this in the high mountains of northern Guatemala with yellow flowers, disappointingly only white have been produced on the single plant that has flowered for us so far. Moving further south we collected Vaccinium consanguineum BSWJ10486 on the Cordillera de Talamanca, Costa Rica, where it grew high up in the clouds mimicking something from the myrtle family with small glossy leaves and plump black fruit. From the eastern side of the United States comes Viburnum prunifolium, where it is valued for its autumnal hues as well as the black edible fruit. Moving smartly back to Asia we are adding a couple of collections of Weigela from Japan, namely W. decora and W. floribunda neither have flowered as yet to confirm their identities. Styrax obassia BSWJ10890 is taking the place of our previous collection, this collection will definitely not disappoint, growing well in our exposed field already.there are also some additional collections of the increasingly popular Lindera from Japanese woodlands, L. obtusiloba will require no introduction, but L. umbellata and its variety may. Irresistible with their butter yellow small foliage and black fruit in the autumn held on dark stems. The bright red petioles on our collection of Daphniphyllum macropodum from Yakushima immediately caught our eyes, although only forming dwarfed trees in their challenging natural habitat. Further south from the coastal area of northern Taiwan I collected the seed of what appears to be the shrubby species D. teysmannii, which enjoys that exposed maritime environment. Not so with D. majus BSWJ11744, yet another new species to cultivation from northern Vietnam, where they form impressive small trees with 30cm long rugose leaves and grape-like pendant panicles of rounded blue-black fruit. Will anyone ever appreciate the time that we have spent searching for the fruit of these trees? It must be substantial by now. Gamblea pseudoevodiifolia BSWJ11707 also hails from this area, still think that Evodiopanax was a far more descriptive name for this Scheffleralike taxon, with evergreen leaflets and black panicles of fruit. Finally we are able to offer Schefflera aff. myriocarpa BSWJ11828, probably late in the season, a collection from a higher altitude than others of this group with a false or additional whirl of foliage. Meanwhile the name S. kornasii has been imposed on what we collected as S. vietnamensis. S. alpina BSWJ11827 on the other hand will be large enough to release by the spring along with the other much asked for S. aff. chapana BSWJ I do make myself unpopular by refusing to sell these until they are large enough to be planted, it may not even make commercial sense to grow them to a size, but the last thing we wish to happen is for them to acquire an ill-founded reputation of being tender.when all they require is a little time to form some wood. I suspect the same is true of Neolitsea aff. polycarpa KWJ12309 a genus that Dan has been encouraging me to grow for years.this laurel relative from the forests of Fansipan, was irresistible with glossy orbicular foliage with 33

pronounced venation and long drip tip, while the fruit were a bright red in conspicuous clusters. The name Tripterygium hypoglauca was used last year, but as ever the epithet has been transferred to T. wilfordii WWJ12009, a name coined for the incorrect plants for many years. While we have retained T. hypoglauca for the Chinese collections. I am somewhat astonished on excursions of our field grown stock beds when people are so pleasantly impressed on encountering the horticultural merits of this genus as if it were for the first time. They have been in cultivation for around a century yet nobody thought of growing this woody climber as a shrub.we are also happy to introduce their close relatives Celastrus kusanoi CWJ12445 and C. paniculatus CWJ12478 from Taiwan, while C. orbiculatus v. papillosus BSWJ591 is a re-introduction from Korea, all have a good display of yellow splitting fruit exposing the red-orange aril encased seed. Clematis fujisanensis BSWJ11370 may look evergreen, but as is also common with C. ternifolia it has a flamboyant display of fragrant white flowers in late summer. C. brachyura BSWJ8854 also has white flowers, but is a small herbaceous species, which we originally collected seed of from the frozen mountains to the north of Seoul, South Korea in The excitement when we found C. fasciculiflora KWJ12160 was memorable, just a small branch poking its head out from dense undergrowth, even several other clematis were competing in this limestone area of northern Vietnam. The ornamentation of foliage displayed on the young plants has been exceptional, creating difficulty in selecting plants for our own garden.while Holboellia brachyandra HWJ1023 from the same valley all be it from the acidic side, is back on our list with a new name, I will not extol its qualities too much or there will be too much demand, as this year at least we will not have many plants. Incidentally both this and Schefflera taiwaniana have been rejected by the trade (mass) of Europe as they cannot believe they are hardy.yet in the USA they are gearing up for a huge demand, of course Europe will end up importing them. Lack of foresight or what..? Magnolia floribunda v. tonkinensis WWJ12003 is new to me although there was one of Dan Hinkley s collections offered as an affinity. As can be seen this is one identified by Peter Wharton, whom I was hoping could tutor me on this genus before his untimely death last year. Peter was also instrumental in identifying and collecting M. foveolata WWJ11929 from a real honeypot location in the far north of northern Vietnam close to the border with China where they formed large stands of small trees, in the autumn of 2007, a fabulous area Sue and I had discovered the previous year while collecting M. foveolata BSWJ Our poor guides were exhausted running up and down the trees to collect more and more seed as we selected the best undersides of the superb foliage. It is from this same area that we collected the unmistakable (star-anise-like) seed capsules of Illicium majus WWJ11919, once included in the same family as magnolia. Hardly surprising as this, yet another new species to cultivation, has luxuriant foliage to 20 cm long.the middle sections of the leaves are undulate, rendering them easily identifiable even when the scented white flowers are not to be seen. Schisandra aff. plena BSWJ664 is mentioned here as a close relative, because we have 34

been forced into yet another name change as the previous taxon has been transferred to Kadsura. Not to be forgotten is another collection of Dan s, Pittosporum aff. oblongilimbum DJHV06137 with pleasing evergreen small undulating foliage, not flowered for us yet, but money on it to be scented.the Polyspora we introduced last year has been well received, this year we have a stable mate P. longicarpa WWJ11604 from our collection gathered near the Tram Ton Pass with the Whartons in A species with long seed capsules and narrower foliage, but still with the wonderful white camellia-like large flowers held in the autumn. Before leaving Vietnam Photinia integrifolia HWJ946 is one of many species we find here, another evergreen species with unusual matt green foliage and wide cymes of white-yellow flowers followed by purple-red berries in profusion. While P. villosa v. coreana BSWJ8789 is a variety of this colourful yet little known species also valued for its edible fruit and gorgeous autumnal foliage. Rhododendron mucronulatum BSWJ786 from the cold eastern parts of Korea is seldom seen, a deciduous species which can flower as early as January on the bare stems.there will be other similar species added through the season time permitting to identify them. Sarcococca trinervia BSWJ9500 is a collection from close to Ooty a hillstation in the Nilgiri Hills of southern India, better known for growing tea. Here it lined the roads as we drove to the summit of the highest peak, wish it was all as easy as that. Finally a few woodies we are adding to our list from cultivation. Stewartia rostrata has formed a small delicate tree in our walled garden where it has long been admired for its small foliage and abundance of white flowers.we ve been having fun for years encouraging guests to our walled garden to rub the leaves of the male then female plants of Skimmia anquetilia, try it and see what it proves. Aucuba japonica Viridis is yet another from the same garden which we keep on being asked for, wonderful display of red fruit in spring highlighted by the deeply toothed glossy (un-spotted) leaves. Then Aristolochia sempervirens refuses to stop flowering all summer and autumn, yet another wonderful plant from Louisa Arbuthnott of Stone House Cottage Nurseries. There is a lady with a eye for a good plant. Not forgetting Daphne genkwa, been on my list to plant out on top of a sunny stone wall for a while, always too busy in the spring, such is a nurseryman s lot. 35

More notes on our 2010 introductions :- Herbaceous to tuberous including a few climbers From woodland conditions in Japan we have found Aconitum aff. zigzag v. ryohakuense BSWJ8906 a naturally arching species with conventional monkshood blue flowers. While A. albo-violaceum v. purpurea BSWJ8477 is an additional colour form of this species rather than a variety (who am I to argue). Bearing elongated slender helmets on angled stems that will twine if given a host, but also happy to form a clump of plate-like basal leaves with protruding flowering spikes. A. loczyanum BSWJ11529 was the obvious identity of a Japanese species we found growing in quite different conditions from an open exposed Õnogahara Plateau, Shikoku Island Japan at 1100m in the autumn of 2006.An upright species to about a metre with dark green mottled deeply divided palmate foliage and terminal panicles of elongated slender purple helmets. No prizes for guessing the home of Anemone sumatrana BSWJ11265, although we were not expecting such a temperate plant even though we were on the slopes of their highest volcano. It inhabited dank forest floors where the mottled foliage formed small colonies. With the widely opening white long stemmed flowers held above, in umbels which migrate to the forest floor once flowering has ceased, rooting as they do so. Thalictrum rubescens BSWJ10006 is only a small species forming more scattered colonies all be it in a far more hostile environment mixed with dwarf bamboo in a sheltered gully high up on Hohuanshan eastern Taiwan. T. tuberiferum BSWJ10999 was also from a challenging altitude in Japan, forming clumps of large three-lobed leaflets which had 60 cm tall stems of fluffy white flowers earlier. From forests up in the north of Honshu we have a collection of Paeonia japonica where we found a few plants in seed resulting from the white flowers. Asarum nipponicum BSWJ2839 has taken a number of years to bulk up enough for us to offer, a selection with patterned leaves. Cacalia farfarifolia v. acerina BSWJ11541 is one of our stronger growing species from Japanese mountain forests, with arrow-shaped foliage and panicles of whiteyellow flowers. Differing from the white flowering species C. kiusiana BSWJ11460 which has palmately five deltoidly-lobed (triangular) leaves irregularly sharply long toothed, if you can t work out what that looks like, its easier to look at the website.as is the case with C. hastatus v. farfaraefolius BSWJ of a similar ilk, but smaller with hastate leaves and flared fluffy white flowers. Ainsliaea chapaensis BSWJ11720 may be closely related, but originates from warmer Vietnamese forest floor, with slender spikes of white propeller-like flowers. Tripterospermum volubile BSWJ11774 was sharing the floor of the same forest twinning above its hosts when it could to show off its white trumpet-shaped flowers similar to its gentian kin. Another of our Vietnamese collections has been re-branded Sedum aff. beauverdii HWJ824 somewhat unconvincingly I have to confess, as this relates to a Chinese species from much higher altitudes.we will also have some plants of S. morrisonense BSWJ7078 another yellow flowering prostrate grower, but named after the highest mountain in Taiwan, 52

Mt. Morrison that was (Yushan nowadays). I must mention Rubus taiwanicola CWJ12400 as again a new collection proved superior in form, hopefully we can propagate from the few plants left after the onslaught. Ardisia japonica BSWJ1032 hails from the island of Chejudõ South Korea, where this small evergreen tightly suckering shrub covers the forest floors bearing small white flowers in clusters followed by bright red fruit. Adenophora BSWJ8608 refuses to be categorised, never the less it proved irresistible last year as A. radiatifolia, it has been re-christened as A. verticillata this year. A. takedae BSWJ11424 is a much smaller plant collected on a memorably beautiful day at the top of a Shikoku mountain where we found untold goodies on our ascent. At last Lobelia montana BSWJ8220 has been identified, a peculiar species from the dark forests of Vietnam and beyond. I wish the same could be said for Impatiens species from China DJHC98415, it is a worthy plant which appears to be well behaved, a female only clone with shell pink flowers over dark green foliage. Begonia annulata HWJK2424 was a collection from our last Nepalese expedition where its patterned leaves could be seen clinging to vertical cliffs on our decent down the Mewa Kola. B. sikkimensis BSWJ2692 is a fresh identity for the species we collected in Sikkim in 1994, where it grew in the shelter of the forest, it needed to as the diesel in our Jeep froze. Remusatia hookeriana BSWJ2529 was a collection from that same area, a peculiar aroid with a stoloniferous habit, yet growing as an epiphyte with white ageing yellow spathes. Not many people realise that many Polygonatum also grow as epiphytes, such is the case with the very distinct P. cathcartii BSWJ2429 a collection from the forests further west in Sikkim. A yellow flowering species with opposite leaves held on long purple mottled stems, not to be confused with P. oppositifolium an evergreen species from the same area.two other species are joining our inventory this year from China, P. prattii is the smaller with scattered leaves on a stem to 30 cm tall and axillary pink-lilac flowers followed by pink fruit, P. roseum is of a similar habit but taller and narrower foliage. P. tonkinensis white/green flowering HWJ861 is another epiphytic species (perfectly adaptable to terrestrial growing) similar in habit to our other collections but on larger plants with of course different coloured flowers. Maianthemum paniculatum purple flowered form BSWJ9137 is a collection from our first expedition to Guatemala in 2001, where this large evergreen species grew as an epiphyte on shaded cliffs. Still in Guatemala M. scilloideum v. roseum BSWJ10355 was supposed to be a common coloniser at high altitude, alas the over grazing of such areas over the years has restricted the species as well as this pink flowering form to only a few areas. Moving down a touch in altitude, Bomarea are valuable herbaceous climbers, which we are learning to site under shrubs in the garden. This avails them just enough frost protection to emerge the following year with a display of their Alstroemeria-like trumpet flowers. B. hirsuta BSWJ10774 is a small species collected from the Paramo to the south of Bogota, with a congested cluster of bright orange flowers. B. multiflora BSWJ10681 has larger flowers more of a yellow ageing to orange, although different from what we have grown as B. caldasii for many years, which we will also be offering this season. Along with another species that has 53

been here for a long while as B. frondea bearing huge umbels of long bright yellow flowers. Aristea ecklonii GWJ9469 from the mountains of Sri Lanka looked very similar to Orthrosanthus another blue flowering monocot that we saw seeding everywhere in Central America. Although I read that A. ecklonii originates from grassland and scrub of South Africa's Eastern Cape to Tanzania. Globba hookeri HWJCM471 is a member of the ginger family, which we collected a few bulbils of on our 1995 expedition to Nepal. For us it forms a slender plant to over a meter tall with slender terminal spikes of strange yellow flowers that transform to bulbils. Hedychium coronarium BSWJ3745 may be a more familiar member of the family, this represents a collection from Taiwan where it has naturalised long ago. H. x raffillii was a gift from Dan several years ago, every year it reliably produces a wonderful display of pale orange spidery flowers. There are a few collections of Roscoea that we are able to offer, R. tibetica BWJ7878 is a vigorous low growing plant with purple flowers, as is R. tibetica f. atropurpurea BWJ7640 but with deep purple flowers.where as R. cautleyoides BWJ7781 is distinct enough to warrant a cultivar name as it has sizeable flowers born late in the season, see the description at the end. Caulokaempferia petelotii BSWJ11818 may well have to be cultivated in pots, not because it is tender, but small.we have grown this demure species with outlandish bright yellow flowers for its size ever since we found it in Vietnam clinging to mossy cliffs. Heloniopsis koreana BSWJ4173 is a collection of a recently described species with nodding purple-blue flowers. We are also adding another Japanese collection identified as H. orientalis v. flavida BSWJ11400 with white purple stained flowers (thought flavida meant yellow?).we will be offering a few new lilies amongst them is Lilium lankongense BWJ7691 my collection from China with grassy foliage and pale pink turk s-cap flowers.while Tricyrtis nana BSWJ11399 is a long awaited addition, abundant once we tapped into the seam of wild populations of this miniature yellow flowering species running through Shikoku. Although we have grown plants labelled as this species from cultivation in Japan these do differ. Tofieldia aff coccinea is another charming dwarfed plant with small sword-shaped leaves in fans and white-pink flowers. Already established in cultivation is Iris orientalis, which we were given seed of some years back. The resulting tall plants with large yellow-white flowers have performed so well over the years that customers are demanding that we offer it, who are we do deny them. 54

New cultivar names we are allocating Hydrangea aspera Kawakamii 'Formosa' BSWJ7025 Originates from a seed collection we gathered from Hsitou Experimental Forest, Central Taiwan. A fragile area constantly under attack from natural disasters, encompassing many endangered plant populations. It appears to be the lower limit for this species. Where it is distinct from other forms of Kawakamii in bearing larger foliage on longer petioles, with wide inflorescences to 60 cm across, on large shrubs 4-5 m tall in the wild. A feature that confused taxonomists into including this taxon into H. aspera ssp. robusta, which it evidently is not. Hydrangea serrata Crûg Cobalt BSWJ6241a One of our original seed collections from the Mt. Unzen area of Kyushu, Japan in Of a very floriferous dwarf form of this amenable deciduous lacecap species hydrangea, bearing corymbs of strong blue lace-cap (pink in acid soil) flowers May-August. While the foliage ages to a purple cast if exposed to sun, as in the field where we grow the mother plants, which are still only a metre tall without pruning at around 10 years old. Roscoea cautleyoides 'Crûg's Late Lemon' BWJ7781 Is from a seed collection I gathered in the Lijiang area of Yunnan in 2000, from a trail close to Yu Hu village where Joseph Rock used to reside. The plants were common along the trail, but only had seed in one small area. This collection is distinct in only coming into flower late in the summer typically starting July to August for us and continuing flowering into September and even October. The stems are green only brown stained at the base, while the flowers are pale yellow larger than normal, comparing favourably with other named clones. 55
