The Wonderful Story of Alberto and his Fiat 500C Topolino Belvedere!

fiat-500c-topolino-belvedere

10 years ago Alberto Valstrona had just celebrated his 75th birthday, and as a real Italian was of course accompanied by his whole family! Living in the beautiful village of Omegna, they had a great picnic that afternoon at the nearby Lake d’Orta. It was there that the memories of the good old days came flooding back to him. Being a car enthusiast he wanted to work at a project which proves his technical skills and not spend his days resting amongst the olive trees.

Alberto had nice memories of the Fiat Topolino Belvedère which he owned years ago. Driving slowly around the lake with Sofia tightly next to him. Despite himself but especially Sofia has grown a few inches wider over the years and the in their minds large Topolino now seemed a lot smaller. Still, Alberto thought a restoration object was a fine way of spending his days off. Sofia thought it was a good plan and sons Giuseppe and Salvatore would if necessary, assist their father if help was needed. So in whole northern Italy he looked around for the perfect Belvedere to restore. After rejecting several cars, in a came a grey car from the year 1954, and the restoration could begin.

DSC09907-Large

The Fiat was solid, complete and very original, a great starting point to be able to make a wonderful restoration. He did not take any risks and spent many hours on the tiny Topolino. Alberto decided not to over-restore the car, but bring it back in it’s original level, just as it seems the Fiat was just driven out of the factory. The under carriage has been in the hands of a restorer who gave all details extraordinary attention. Each part of this Fiat Topolino was judged, and treated with care by Alberto with his high quality requirements. Personally, we think the nice classic two-tone grey body colour and brown interior a perfect combination.

IMG_7455

After more than two years, the car was ready and Sofia was invited to enjoy the lake as they had done so many times. And indeed … the seats were still good but seemed to be a little tighter … It did not spoil the fun. In the following years regular tours were made, but of course only with good weather and an open roof.

IMG_7453

The feeling while driving is maybe only understood by the real enthusiast. Despite its small size and low power the Topolino gives a feeling of freedom and enjoyment, which is further enhanced by the full open roof. Space for children, dog and picnic basket is sufficient. In terms of investment, it is also positive and especially when considering that a restoration done at the same quality level as this car is offering, will cost much more money than our asking price. It is important to know that the Fiat drove only 2500 km car after its extensive restoration.

We know that there are cheaper Belvedères on the market, but better? We dare to doubt it. Do you really want value for money, something fun and super original? Then this Fiat Topolino 500C Belvedere has certainly have to come to your attention.

For the fans of the famous Mille Miglia: the car is eligible for this great Italian event and the cheapest possibility to take part!

NEW ARRIVALS: See the stunning addition to the DD Classics showroom!

This week we have welcomed some more beautiful classics into the wonderful array of cars we have for sale. Let us know your favourite!

Aston Martin DB6 Volante RHD

Aston Martin DB6 Volante

  • One of the rarest of post-war Aston Martins
  • The first Aston Martin to use the iconic ‘Volante’ name
  • Highly usable ZF four-speed automatic gearbox
  • Extensive history file with invoices dating from 1977 till the present day
  • 1 of only 140 “Mark 1” DB6 Volantes produced

The Aston Martin DB6 was launched at the 1965 Paris/London Motor Shows, arriving at a difficult time for the company with the UK economy struggling and the U.S market becoming subject to more and more regulation. Their primary aim was to increase the rear-seat space of the immensely popular DB5, resulting in an extensive re-style with a raised roofline and reshaped rear quarter windows. The resulting design made the DB6 a genuine four-seater tourer.

Jaguar to recreate the famous Le Mans Winning XKSS sports car, each costing more than £1,000,000!

Nine examples of Jaguar’s XKSS, the road version of the Le Mans-winning D-type, are being built to replace those destroyed during a fire at the factory after only 18 of 25 had been built

Jaguar has announced that it will build nine new examples of its famed XKSS sports car produced in 1957, each costing in excess of £1 million.

The XKSS was a roadgoing version of Jaguar’s D-type racing car, which won the Le Mans 24 Hours race in successive years from 1955 to 1957.

By that time the D-type had become obsolete so Jaguar boss Sir Williams Lyons took the inspired decision to convert 25 remaining D-type racers into road cars, with a taller windscreen and a door on the left for a passenger. The section of bodywork separating the two seats was also removed, along with the distinctive aerodynamic fin behind the driver.

The first deliveries of the new Jaguar XKSS will start in early 2017, with each car being hand-built at Jaguar Classic’s new Experimental Shop in Warwick.

It is referred to as a continuation car, as it is a faithful replica of a vehicle no longer in production and built according to the original blueprints.

The original 25 XKSS cars were earmarked for export to the USA, but only 16 were completed before a fire at Jaguar’s factory in Browns Lane, Coventry, destroyed the remaining nine.

1957 jaguar XKSS
The XKSS had a taller screen than the D-type and lacked the racing car’s distinctive fin behind the driver

Now, 59 years later, those nine “lost” cars will be replaced, to be sold to what Jaguar describes as “a select group of established collectors and customers”.

Tony O’Keeffe of Jaguar Land Rover Classic said: “A number of continuation XKSS cars have been sold already, more than half, but we wanted to ensure some cars were made available to the public.”

Original cars, whose owners included film idol Steve McQueen, rarely come up for sale but are conservatively valued at more than £10 million.

O’Keeffe said that he knew of a genuine original car currently for sale privately at $18 million (£12.7 million) and that they are so rare and coveted that you’ll never find them at auction.

The XKSS isn’t the first Jaguar continuation. In May 2014 it announced a run of six Lightweight E-type racers to complement the 12 original cars that left the Browns Lane factory in 1963, bringing the total amount of genuine lightweight E-types to 18, the number that was originally intended. It has applied the same logic for the new XKSS and intends to build on the expertise gained during construction of the continuation E-types, which were all sold before production commenced.

1957 Jaguar XKSS
For their £1.1 million or thereabouts, owners of the nine new XKSS cars will be able to specify items used on the original such as a luggage rack on the boot and a tonneau cover

Like the original, each XKSS will have a 3.4-litre, straight-six engine developing 250bhp. Every car will be constructed to the same specifications as the first 16 made in 1957, with every aspect fully certified by Jaguar.

Other famous continuation cars include the 1963 Aston Martin DB4 Zagato, as well as the Ford GT40 and AC Cobra.

In mid-March, Jaguar Land Rover renamed its Heritage business as Jaguar Land Rover Classic. It is a division of JLR’s Special Operations and is dedicated to providing cars, services, parts and experiences to owners and fans of classic Jaguars and Land Rovers around the world.

Tim Hannig, the director of Jaguar Land Rover Classic, said: “The XKSS occupies a unique place in Jaguar’s history and is a car coveted by collectors the world over for its exclusivity and unmistakable design.

“Jaguar Classic’s highly skilled team of engineers and technicians will draw on decades of knowledge to ensure each of the nine cars is completely authentic and crafted to the highest quality.

“Our continuation XKSS reaffirms our commitment to nurture the passion and enthusiasm for Jaguar’s illustrious past by offering exceptional cars, services, parts and experiences.”

If the six exquisite Lightweight E-types produced last year are anything to go by, that £1 million price tag has to be something of a bargain.

Jaguar XJS Prices Continue to Rise as Investors Hunt for the next ‘E-Type’

A grand total of 115,330 Jaguar XJS cars were built over a 21-year span from 1975 to 1996, of which around 80% went overseas. Even though it has now been out of production for 18 years, all parts are still available to service the car and – thanks to its highly distinctive shape – it still turns heads. Tony O’Keeffe, Communications Officer at Jaguar Heritage, himself owns a March 1996 celebration model, a 4.0-litre coupé. He states, “I have no intention of selling the car and over the past two years of ownership I have seen the value increase by over 30%.”

One of the rarest and most desirable cars is one of the 352 V12 cars built between 1975 and 1979 – with the manual gearbox – shortly followed by the 3.6 manual cabriolet. Special versions celebrating the Le Mans wins were also produced: limited production runs that (in the right condition) would sell for a premium, as well as examples of the celebration model, built to celebrate Jaguar’s 75th Birthday. We’ve witnessed the price of the E-type increase dramatically over the past few years and, while we don’t believe that the XJS could ever reach E-type prices, they will surely continue to rise in value.
