Royal Standard Hosta Bareroot

$16.95$42.95

The Royal Standard Hosta is a classic perennial known for its elegant foliage and graceful presence in shaded gardens. Its large, heart-shaped leaves form dense mounds, providing a lush and textured backdrop to other garden plants. In midsummer, tall spikes of fragrant, lavender-white flowers emerge, adding a delightful scent and attracting pollinators to the garden. This hosta variety is a reliable and low-maintenance choice for shady areas, perfect for adding color and interest to woodland gardens, borders, or containers.

Key Features:

  • Color: Deep green, glossy leaves with creamy white margins.
  • Fragrance: Fragrant lavender-white flowers bloom in midsummer, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds.
  • Wildlife and Pest Resistance: Hostas are generally resistant to deer and rabbit browsing.
  • Planting Zone: Suitable for planting zones 3-9.
  • Sun Preferences: Partial to full shade. Can tolerate some morning sun but prefers protection from intense afternoon sunlight.
  • Drought Tolerance: Hostas prefer consistently moist soil but can tolerate short periods of drought once established. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture.

Planting Instructions for Bare-root Hosta:

  1. Prepare the Site: Choose a shaded or partially shaded location with well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the bare-root hosta and deep enough to accommodate its roots.
  2. Amend the Soil: Mix in organic matter such as compost to enrich the soil and improve drainage if necessary.
  3. Planting: Place the hosta in the center of the hole with the roots spread out. Position the crown (where the roots meet the leaves) just below the soil surface.
  4. Backfill: Fill the hole with soil, gently pressing it down around the roots to eliminate air pockets.
  5. Water: Thoroughly water the newly planted hosta to settle the soil and ensure good root establishment.
  6. Mulch: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
  7. Maintenance: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the plant’s first growing season. Provide occasional fertilizer in spring to promote healthy growth. Remove any dead or damaged leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance.

Proud Products Guarantee!!

Plants from Daylily Nursery are guaranteed to arrive healthy and green. If you have any concerns or are dissatisfied within the first five days of receiving your plants, please email or call our office. If your plants have received less-than-ideal care or were purchased for planting outside of your recommended growing zone, your purchase isn’t covered by our guarantee. Zone recommendations are provided in our listings.
Use your best judgment before ordering during unusually hot or cold weather (below 32 degrees F, or in excess of 95F for shipping purposes), as these extremes may leave your plant vulnerable to damage. The optimal time for planting for most of our material is in mid to late spring, past the danger of hard frost. This allows your plants the longest possible growing season. Summer and very early fall are also suitable, as long as your plant is placed in optimal conditions and receives adequate water. Late fall and winter are very risky in most areas. When in doubt about suitable planting times or zone compatible plants for your area, reach out to your local Agricultural Extension Office.
If issues with your plants arise within the first 30 days of receipt, please email or call our office. Our knowledgeable staff will review your concerns and provide guidance and troubleshooting, or a one-time replacement if necessary. The customer assumes responsibility for the cost of shipping the replacement. Happy Planting!
