Cigarette Smoke, Dust, Debris and Your Computer

Not only is second hand smoke bad for humans, it’s also harmful to your computer.  Cigarettes are very unhealthy and people depend on them to keep their stress levels under control, but what happens to a computer after you smoke by it?

If you look below, you will see the damaging effects cigarette smoke can have on your personal computer.  If this much damage inside your computer can be caused just by smoking near it, I wonder how much damage cigarettes can do to ones lungs!

Here are photos of a recent computer I worked on.  I will not disclose the client’s name, but I’ve asked permission to use these photos from her machine and you can see it’s not very clean…  This is a mixture of dust and tar buildup from the cigarette smoke.

So there you have it.  A basic rundown of what secondhand smoke can do to your computer.  From personal experience and fixing computers, I’ve had to replace 2 power supplies out of the same computer within one years time due to cigarette smoke damage.  So you might want to think twice about smoking by your computer.

I would recommend getting a can of air and blasting the dust and cigarette tar out of your computer.  You may need a toothbrush if it’s caked on pretty thick!  If you need help cleaning the inside of your computer, get in touch with me.  I’d be more than happy to help!

The parts BELOW were from a computer that was given to me for free.  I had to do some MAJOR cleaning to it.  As you can see the thickness of the dust, tar buildup from smoking near your computer.  There is a heat sink that connects directly to your CPU, the fan is on top of the heat sink, keeping it at the proper cooling temperatures.  Cooling fans are important and must be cleared from any dust and junk.

  1. Wow! I’ve opened up lots of towers and always see that white-grayish dust build up. I’ve never seen this brown stuff before. What an eye opener! great share, great blog!

    • The white grayish dusts is very LIGHT dust, which in their case is very good. It’s not thick like this. Either way, dust can harm the bearings in your fans and cause them to dry out. That’s why some people have LOUD fans they can typically hear making a LOUD buzzing sound. The bearings dry out from the dust, which aren’t too greasy anymore. And yes, I agree with you, this is HORRIBLE. Mixed with a lot of smoke from cigarettes.

  2. Today, I went to the beach front with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my
4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed.
There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!
