Top Options For Giethoorn In The Netherlands

Giethoorn is a Dutch village in the Weerribben-Wieden National Park in the province of Overijssel in the Netherlands. This is a lovely journey that will enchant you with its natural beauty. In Giethoorn, you can see how the Dutch love to live by the water. The environment is full of lakes, reeds, and forests, and this lovely village has many beautiful farms. The most amazing thing about the village is its little houses with thatched roofs and 170 bridges.

Giethoorn was a settlement of peat harvesters. Cutting peat created lakes, and people built houses on the islands between them. As a result, access was only available by bridge or using traditional Giethoorn boats. The narrow boats are pushed along using a long pole. Today you can still travel on the waters on an electric boat. The boat tour takes you past the beautiful 18th and 19th-century farmhouses and under the bridges and takes one to two hours. You will find yourself on a trip to Holland in the Land of Water. So let’s travel together with the following article to Giethoorn, Holland.

Travel Information

Giethoorn is an hour and a half drive from the capital city of Amsterdam or Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. The idea is to park around the village center and continue by bike or by canoe. If you want to be sure that you will not miss anything during your visit, it would be better to book your luxurious day trip to Giethoorn from Amsterdam. The tour group usually consists of eight people. This means that the guide has plenty of time to talk with everyone, answer their questions, and talk about this unique village.

Giethoorn tour

If you like walking, you will love to take the “Giethoorn walking route,” which is 2.7 miles and is practically a long walk through the water-rich village. Along the way, you will admire the characteristic wooden bridges, canals, and farmhouses with thatched roofs, which compose a unique environment. There is also the longest route to walk, which is 9.5 miles. If you want to rest along the way, find a table on one of the large terraces by the water to rest and enjoy the scenery.

Cycling in Giethoorn

Those of you who love sports can rent a bike. There are bike-rental companies that rent bicycles and electric bikes. I highly recommend booking your bike in advance to avoid disappointment. The cycle route starts in Giethoorn and takes you through the Weerribben-Wieden National Park and along Beulakermeadow, Vollenhovermeer, and Giethoorschemeer to finally return to the starting point.

Gastronomy in Giethoorn

After your tour, you would definitely like to rest and find a nice place to eat. This village undoubtedly has a reputation when it comes to gastronomic choices. Giethoorn has various excellent restaurants, many of which are naturally beautiful at the water’s edge. Highly recommended are the restaurant De Lindenhof with 2 Michelin stars as well as Hollands Venezë and ‘t Achterhuus (Dominee T O Hylkemaweg 43).
In these places, you will be able to taste the specialties of the restaurants, such as the following: crab with lettuce, smoked salmon, oysters with ginger, lasagna with lobster, and walleye (Eels) and cod with bacon. However, remember that a picnic is common in many towns and villages in Europe. The beautiful landscapes and wonderful parks provide excellent scenery to enjoy a light meal, especially in the summer months, so do not underestimate this option.
