UPDATE: At 10:53 p.m. CDT, the National Weather Service in Honolulu cancelled the tsunami watch issued for the Hawaiian islands.

"Sea level readings from the nearest two deep-ocean DART gauges now confirm there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii, although some small sea level changes may occur."

ORIGINAL STORY

Following a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the western Pacific Ocean off the coast of Russia Tuesday evening, tsunami watches have been issued for the Hawaiian islands as the threat for a tsunami is monitored.

The earthquake struck shortly before 10 p.m. central daylight time at a depth of 37 miles in open waters of the western Pacific. Right now forecasters are attempting to determine is a tsunami was triggered.

The National Weather Service will have updates on their website.
