Rather an odd pairing: warm sunflower and cool hosta.

That Hosta is so delicate against the vibrancy of the sunflowers. Great photos!

Thanks, Joy. Quite different plants, but in bloom at the same time.

I grew hosta’s in my garden in Tsawwassen. I love them, they are so hardy. And sunflowers are my favourite flower. Yours look amazing.

Yikes, that should be hostas. I wish we could edit our comments.

So do I. It’s amazing how often a typo pops into view right after I hit Send.

Thanks, Darlene. The sunflower plant the seeds came from was a small one, so I was surprised this one grew so tall. Better growing conditions, I think. Hostas are great where deer can’t eat them.

That hosta variety is just gorgeous in bloom!

It does look cool and perfect now. Once the first flowers to open go limp, it starts to look tatty.

That seems to happen to a lot of flowers.

Intriguing pairing Audrey. Deer are very partial to hostas in Virginia so many suburbanites find them difficult to grow without them being eaten. Not sure about deer and sunflowers, but when the seeds are ripe, sunflowers are very attractive to birds and small rodents. Our gerbils used to ferret out sunflower seeds in a bowl of gerbil chow. I think it was the only thing they would overeat on if just given sunflower seeds.

Thanks, Pat. I see stubs of deer-chomped hostas in the neighbourhood. Mine are in the fenced back yard. I planted 6 sunflower seeds. Four sprouted and were promptly eaten by some critter. When 2 more sprouted, I took them inside at night. I planted them in the big pot, but one expired. So this plant is a survivor !

Very hearty plant. We planted a few sunflower seeds when we lived in Alexandria (outside DC) and nobody bothered them until the flowers essentially dried out and turned into seed heads. Gorgeous flowers together in your photos and most unexpected

Actually they aren’t close together, except in the blog post. 😀 I hope to see birds pecking at sunflower seeds someday.

That would be cool. Probably a bit later in the fall.

Pity you can’t send scents over the internet! I could use a whiff of hosta right about now!

I am reminded of Flanders and Swann singing about a bindweed and a honeysuckle.

Haha! I have both of those here. Bindweed is nothing to sing about, unless you are chanting a curse.

It’s amazing watching something that started out as a tiny little seedling grow into something like this.
