Last week, the news broke that Disney had hired their partner in crime, screenwriter, Linda Wooverton, who previously penned "Beauty and the Beast," and "The Lion King," to work on the screenplay for the live-action take on the 50-year-old hit.

The story of "Maleficent" would be told in a "wicked" way, from the perspective of the self-proclaimed "Mistress of All Evil," Maleficent.

After Jolie completes the international thriller, "The Tourist" that she is currently filming in Venice with Johnny Depp, her schedule is wide open and she has stated she "would like to sign on to play the titular villain" in the upcoming film.

"Alice in Wonderland" director, Tim Burton, has been rumoured to direct "Maleficent," however Disney reps did not comment on anything to do with the film and Jolie's manager, Geyer Kosinski could not be reached for comment.

With "Alice in Wonderland" a massive box office hit, it's no surprise that Disney are looking to reprise more classic material and if Jolie comes on board, "Maleficent" could become another huge hit for Disney.

Angelina Jolie's next film to open will be the spy flick "Salt" which releases here in August.
