This Week in Fashion: Michelle Obama’s H&M’s Style

February 11, 2011

I always knew there was a reason why I was such a fan of Michelle Obama.  It’s her charisma, her personality, how she connects with the public and people’s way of life, and, of course, her sense of style.  She has fabulous tastes in clothes and she doesn’t mind patroning retail stores such as H&M, which has stores every where now.  Come on how can you not like H&M?

So, the big hoorah now is that she was on the set of “Today” with Matt Lauer wearing a style from H&M.  Shine reported, “The first lady wore a breezy, feminine, polka-dot piece, not from some fancy big-name designer, but off-the-rack and available for $34.95 from Swedish company H&M.”  It’s a very lovely ready-for-spring type of dress.  According the article on Shine, the first lady’s stylist customized the dress adding the sleeves and the bright orange sash in replace of the red cloth sash that originally came with it.  The shoes were a totally different touch for me.  I think she could have gotten away with some black sling backs and still made the dress look really good.

Here is the original dress from H&M, which is available at $34.99.  It is sleeveless and has the red cloth sash as shown.  The sleeves give it a completely different look with a more conservative flare.

A cute pair of red strappy sandals could even make this springy dress the ensemble of the day.

This isn’t the first time the First Lady stepped out in an H&M selection.  She’s been seen boldly gracing the public in a sexy stripped sheath dress which she paired up with a thick black belt and some low-heeled black pumps.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen here in anything over 3-inches.  I’d be amazed if she did wear some, or perhaps I just haven’t been paying that much attention.

This is a wear-to-the-office kind of dress.  Good for public appearances, quite effective in addressing the public and is comfortable.  Her style makes her very appealing and accessible to women of America because even though she is the First Lady, she also remains true to herself which makes it very easy for her to reach out to the public as she does and does not let any bad press sway her.

The First Lady certainly knows how to keep it real when it comes to style and taste.  She’s got a good stylist who has a keen eye for fashion as well.
