There is an endearing charm in the often gauche portraits of Cedric Morris (1889–1982). These portraits of friends and students, including Lucian Freud, from when he was based in Suffolk, running the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing first at Dedham in Essex and then, after a 1940 fire, at Benton End in Suffolk with his life-long partner Arthur Lett-Haines. In 2017 a significant collection of paintings and drawings by Cedric Morris was given to Gainsborough’s House by Maggi Hambling and Robert Davey. The works had remained part of Cedric Morris’s private collection until his death in 1982, and the majority of artworks in this Curation are drawn from this Collection.
