(b The Hague, 19 June 1824; d The Hague, 24 Mar. 1903). Dutch landscape and marine painter, one of the outstanding artists of the Hague School. His work is distinguished by its subtle handling of tone and feeling for atmosphere. His cousin Johannes (or Jan) Weissenbruch (b The Hague, 18 Mar. 1822; d The Hague, 15 Feb. 1880), a painter and lithographer, specialized in town views in the detailed manner of 17th-century artists such as Jan van der Heyden.
