My photographs in the style of Ernst Haas

Having been inspired by Haas’ photographs of close up flowers I chose to take some in a similar style, using natural light.

I like the close up nature of this photograph of a single daffodil. The flower is central and follows the rule of thirds. The clear depth of field has blurred the background completely with only the flower being in focus, drawing the audiences attention to it.

I also really like the strong depth of field of this photograph, with the bright purple colour clearly standing out against the blurred green background. In order to create this contrast I adjusted the levels of the photograph to create stronger colours.

Having experimented with just a single flower I chose to also take photographs of several flowers close up as a group. The light of the sun has highlighted certain aspects of the image, drawing the audiences attention to certain close up petals. Another aspect of this image I particularly like is the shadow of a bee on one of the petals, again showing another close up.

This image is slightly lighter than the other, but it has been taken really close up, enabling the audience to view the details of inside the petals. I have also captured the insect close up adding another element to the photograph. Due to using natural light the sun has highlighted only certain aspects of the flower, another effect I like.

Of all the images this is my favourite. There is a clear depth of field, blurring the background a similar technique used in Haas’ work. The natural light has come from the left and has lit up the leaves and the bee on the flower. I really like the varied colours of the flower and leaves, creating a simple effect.
