Sega’s Time Traveler hologram arcade cabinet.  As a child I was utterly fascinated by this game, but the only cabinet near me was always broken.  I was happy to discover that the Barcade in Chelsea has a fully operational one.  This cab really has all the best aspects of cheesey FMV and flashy technology.  All these years later, I continue to love having a woman dressed as a princess in a bubble literally float in 3D space telling me to “navigate the streams of time to save the universe!”

The humor in the game is also a lot of fun.  The 90’s appears to be much more dangerous than either the Wild West or the Prehistoric Era…due to gun crazy drug dealers (explanation:  it’s the 90’s), zombies (the…90’s?), and a full moon causing lunatics to attack you in the dead of night (SO 90’s).

There’s also a Buck Rogers-style future where you mostly jump over those 50’s-style wind up robot toys and a bunch of crazy wizards who disguise themselves as mushrooms.

In short, it’s crazy…and it has to be, because the gameplay is just Dragon’s Lair…which isn’t really that great.  I have a lot of fun with it, though!

Personal addendum to this story: When I was a kid, I used to go to the arcade a lot. I was born in ‘87 and my three older brothers were 5-10 years older than me. I have a handful of primordial memories from my first arcade as I was dragged there by my brothers long before I ever knew what was going on in the world.

This hologram machine was one of the first things I grew tall enough to observe. The only memories I have of it are of myself peering over the edge of the cabinet, the colorful blocky shapes floating in a black glass void, and a little cowboy man that I was straining to hear over the chaos of sound coming from all over the arcade.

Without context or much understanding of technology, Little Me took this strange display of entertainment technology as an example of how machines were. It’s not disappointing, but fascinating to consider how conceptually exotic watching these little holographic plays were and how there’s not much that currently seems as exciting as the promise of what this was over 20 years ago.
