Found in Mexico, Guatemala, Beliza, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama in damp tropical forests at elevations up to 1500 meters as a medium sized, hot to warm growing epiphytic species with oblong to cylindric, laterally compressed pseudobulbs concealed by one or more brown spotted basal bracts carrying a single, subcoriaceous, elliptic-lanceolate, abaxially carinate leaf with a conduplicate petiole at the base that flowers on a basal, pendulous, 2 to 4" [5 to 10 cm] long, slender, 1 to 3 flowered inflorescence, arising on a newly matured pseudobulb, that has tubular, scarious bracts and large, showy, fragrant, waxy flowers.

Very similar to T freulerae but this one has sub acuminate apices to the sepals, a three lobed lip, dotted red spots on the throat of the lip and sepals that twist in a different manner.
