Acer platanoides ‘Lilliputian’

Lilliputian Norway Maple

A very slow, super narrow genetic dwarf with strong single leader dominance and very short little nubbins for branches. The leaf attachment is quite congested all along the trunk and stems, making a significantly dense narrow spire. Older plants will exhibit the occasional strong branching over time but still they still retain the narrow outline.

Foliage:
Selected for leaf color and unlike others in the trade such as ‘Curly Lamppost’ or ‘Rezek’, which are green leaf types. Lilliputian new leaves are a rich dark purple when first emerging, more mature leaves wine to green purple with dark purple veins. Upon maturity they gradually become more green than purple and by late spring fully green. These forms are also known for their large heavily textured surface, which is crimpled, congested and ridged throughout.

Our 1st release substantial release of this plant and the numbers are few due to extreme slow growth, rarity and difficulty in propagation. While introduced by Handy Nursery the plant originated as a seedling from Collectors Nursery in Battleground WA. As a seedling variant we are thinking it’s likely the parentage was one of the “wine leaf” types such acer ‘Deborah’ or ‘Schwedlerii’
