Film TV – Reflection 6

Film-and-TV-locations-2

Question 6

  1. Consider Sandra’s lecture “Directing Actors” and describe at least a couple of points that you took away from it (even if you’re not the director).

In the lecture, Sandra mentioned that the director is the person that envisions the whole film. The director controls how the film is going to look like as it tells the story. The director is also responsible for the choreography of the actors. He or she must be aware and direct the actors on how are they going to react and where their position is.

Another point that Sandra mentioned was always to have a plan B in the shoot. The director may have a couple of rehearsals before the real shooting, however, he or she must also be aware of the unforeseen circumstances that lies ahead.

Question 7

  1.

In this clip screened in the lecture from the Coen brothers’ ‘Blood Simple‘ describe what is happening in terms of the edits specifically in terms of the audio and video. Also name the different kinds of audio you can hear.

In terms of video, the scene has very standard shots as they have a shot and a reverse shot of both of the characters. The scene also consists of multiple close-up shots such as the shot of the fishes, the lighter, the picture and the stack of money. It also has a long shot after the man with a tie pulls the gun trigger.

In terms of audio, there were both J-cut and L-cut in the scene. In the first few seconds, the edit was a J-cut as the sound comes in first before the audio after the lighter was placed on the table (0:04). As the lighter was placed, the man without a tie was talking before the shot was showing him with the fishes. Before it moves on to the next shot of the man with a tie, the audio was heard first before we see him again as well. This was done to enhance the aesthetic flow of the conversation. The first L-cut was heard in 1:37 as the man with the tie was talking about he wanting the picture back and before he finishes his sentence, the shot changes to the other man walking to the bathroom. Finally, in all these shots, non-diegetic sounds were added into the track as well such as the ambience of the night, toilet flushing and also the gun fire.
