Klaas Gubbels

"My works are about painting, not coffee pots."

Klaas Gubbels is without a doubt one of the most important living Dutch artists. The images created by him have been icons for many generations already: serious but nimble performances that, although recognizable, always test the edges of realism.

With admirable fortitude, Klaas Gubbels has built up an impressive body of work since the 50s, which feature coffee pots, tables, bottles, chess boards and occasionally a female figure or chair.

Especially at a time when many people - including artists - are often guided by the issues of the day, the artistic attitude of Klaas Gubbels is a relief: in the quiet of one of his two studios in Arnhem or France, he systematically continues his search for new expressions within his personal thematics.
