Description

This is a 5 alarm plant nerd alert!  We literally have just a few of this new species which was formally described in 2013 by Aaron Floden in the Journal of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas and it will be 3 years at best before we can offer this again.  These are quite small plants in 2 3/8 square x 5" deep pots but we did flower some of them last year and really, how big can they realistically be when they were only formally described in 2013?  From the Ocoee River area of Tennessee, this new species is closely allied to Clematis crispa and C. viorna and is solidly in the Viorna section of Clematis.  It differs in a quite a number of subtle points but for our purposes. the pinkish-purple sepals only slightly crispate is notable plus an earlier start to flowering (anthesis) in spring which can go from March to October.  Culturally, it differs from the aforementioned comparatives by favoring drier sites.  Depending on nutrition and moisture, this can be short and bushy if on a budget or develop later season vining tendencies to 5' or so if wallowing in the good life.  The vines die to the ground each year much as Clematis recta.  $20 from each plant sold will be sent to Aaron to help fund his critical botanical research.
