Caution | Only authorized service personnel should upgrade the system. Anyone who wants to upgrade the system themselves should know about the dangers of ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) and the necessary precautions. Unknowingly zapping the components of the computer will void the warranty. |
Use Extreme CAUTION
There is a real danger of electric shock from exposed electrical components inside the computer chassis. It is advisable to have a certified computer technician to install and configure hard disk drives.
BIOS (CMOS) Setup Instructions
System Hangs During Boot
If the system hangs during the boot process after installing the Maxtor hard drive - either before or after setting the system BIOS - many systems have a BIOS with a cylinder limitation. This may occur for hard drives that exceed 2.1 GB. If this happens,do the following:
Jumper Configuration
J50 - Master/Slave Only in single drive systems the default : (C) Closed (Jumper installed)
J50 - Master in dual drive systems the default: (C) Closed (Jumper installed)
J50 - Slave drive in dual drive systems: (O) Open (No jumper installed)
J48 - Cable Select the default: Disabled (O) Open (No jumper installed)
J48 - Cable Select: Enabled (C) Closed (Jumper installed)
J46 - 4092 Cylinder Location the default: Disabled (O) Open (No jumper installed)
J46 - 4092 Cylinder Limitation: Enabled (C) Closed (Jumper installed)
J44 and J42 - Factory Reserved: (O) Open (No jumper installed)
The 4092 Cylinder Limitation Explained
Older BIOS' that auto-configure the hard disk drives, may hang when the cylinder value exceeds 4096. What the 4096 Cylinder Limitation jumper does is reduce the capacity in the Identify Drive to 4096, allowing larger capacity drives to work with older BIOS'. For this to happen a software driver is needed to access the full drive capacity.
