Chaenomeles superba Orange Trail - Ornamental Quince - 9 cm Pot
Chaenomeles x superba are arguably one of the most beautiful of all flowering shrubs. The species was originally introduced from China by Sir Joseph Banks in 1869, since when they have been an extremely popular part of the British gardening scene. Chaenomeles x superba Orange Trail is a low growing or spreading variety which rarely reaches more than a 1m tall with a similar spread. Leaves are dark green, glossy and slightly serrated. As the leaves begin to emerge the arching branches are wreathed with clusters of orange-red flowers with lovely contrasting yellow stamens. Aromatic pale yellow fruits flushed with rose ripen in late summer and autumn. Although the fruit of the ornamental Quince is edible it is rather bland so best in jams and jellies or just left to admire and feed the birds! Traditionally grown against a wall but just as happy as a semi-prostrate plant in the border. As a very compact variety it is ideal to grow in a container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
