Resembling S. galacifolia in its bronze-tinged, rounded leaves but the stalks are only about as long as the blades. Flowers pink, 2.5-3.5cm wide, late spring. Japan; eastern Honshu, in woodland on low mountains. Var. grandiflora is a free-flowering variety with pale pink or white flowers 3-3.5cm wide. Var. kantoensis is dwarfer, 5-10cm tall, with leaves broader than long. Flowers pale pink, 3cm wide. [Pl.467]
