Leaves ovate to rhombic orbicular, 5-8cm long, sometimes less, crenate-dentate , hairy and deep green. Flowers opening flat, deep violet, 3-4cm across, usually five-petalled, one to six on glandular stems 6-12cm tall, late spring to summer. Central and eastern Pyrenees and adjacent mountains of north-eastern Spain, in shaded limestone crevices. R.m. 'Alba' has pure white flowers and 'Rosea' is pink. [Pl.399].
