Botanical Description

An Auricula species related to P. hirsuta but with stems exceeding the leaves and red edges to the leaves. Leaves 2-10cm long by l-4cm wide, obovate to ovate, fleshy and stickily glandular hairy. Flowers magenta to lilac with a white eye, 1.5-2.5cm or more across, in umbels of two to twelve on 2-15cm tall stout stems. In six disjunct areas of the Alps: west of Milan and west of Turin ('P. cottia'), eastern Austria and western Slovenia ('P. commutata'), Austrian Styria (ssp. irmingardis). Easily grown in a plastic pot in a cool place under glass; good in a north-facing trough or raised bed. Straightforward and free-flowering.
