A very variable erect shrub for sheltered sites with woody stems 1-2 m, bearing cup-shaped flowers in a range of colours.
Stems erect, woody, 1-2 m with a large terminal bud. Leaves dull green, large, to 60 cm, usually tinged red or purple, biternately divided into narrowly lanceolate acute segments, persistent after senescence in October. Flowers 5-8 cm in diameter, cup-shaped, fleshy, held horizontally or drooping, dark, sometimes rather 'meaty' red to scarlet, orange or yellow, usually with a reddish centre (f. lutea); stamens red to greenish but not pure yellow; carpels 2-5, glabrous. A plant of scrub, second growth and forest edges. An easy garden plant for sheltered sites which can self-sow and be invasive in Atlantic regions. It is worth selecting a good flower colour; some are unattractive.
